~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

ABC announced it is canceling Ugly Betty after the series concludes its current run this spring. Originally, ABC ordered 20 episodes for this season with a few of those episodes still in production. Silvio Horta, Ugly Betty’s executive producer and Steve McPherson, ABC Entertainment Group Chairman released a joint statement about the cancelation decision. “We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”

CBS laid out its scheduling plans prior to Super Bowl XLIV in Miami on February 7. On February 4 and 5:

  • The Early Show at 7a will broadcast from Lummus Park in South Beach with Thursday’s show featuring a live concert by Gloria Estefan. On Friday’s The Early Show, highlights include a live concert by Justin Bieber along with a preview of the Super Bowl.
  • Also on February 4 and 5, CBS Evening News with Katie Couric at 630p will broadcast from Lummus Park.

On February 6:

  • The Early Show, Saturday edition (check local listings) will continue broadcasting from Lummus Park with Dan Marino giving viewers a tour of his Miami and live performances by Wyonna Judd and Wyclef Jean. CBS Evening News with Jeff Glor at 630p will also broadcast from the Sun Life Stadium in Miami.

On February 7:

  • Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer at 1030a will broadcast from the Sun Life Stadium.

Comedy Central will showcase a new batch of comedians in the 14th season of Comedy Central Presents, opening February 19 with two back-to-back 30m episodes starting at 11p. Prior to the season debut, the network will air a special 30m sneak preview Comedy Central Presents Best of 2010 on February 12 at midnight. During the new 14th season, filmed at Gerald W. Lynch Theater in New York City, two episodes will air weekly at 11p and 1130p featuring stand-up performances by such comedians as Tony Rock and Doug Williams (in the premiere episodes) among many others.

TV Land reunites former sweethearts in the new original series First Love, Second Chance, premiering March 10 at 10p. During six episodes, separated couples come together to gauge if the passion and love they once shared can be re-ignited. ITV produces the series for TV Land.

MTV’s season one finale of Teen Mom on Tuesday posted a 3.5 rating among P12-34 and delivered more than 3.6 million total viewers.

~ NATPE 2010  ~

NATPE 2010, in my opinion as I walk around NATPE every year, people always stop and ask me, “So, what’s the buzz? What’s the big story this year?”  Typically there’s one major story breaking the first morning that has everyone chattering and prognosticating all week.  Unfortunately, in the last handful of years at NATPE, the big story that first day has been … well, NATPE.  Convention floor vs. suites (which is now ballroom vs. suites), what buyers didn’t come this year, overall attendee levels, and the mortality of this annual gathering.   It’s easy to say “NATPE is on its way out,” “surely this will be the last year” and “do we really need a NATPE?”  And yet, it’s still here.  Yes, it’s different than it was 10 years ago, which is different than it was 20 years ago.  It’s much smaller, but this year it was also very focused. Those who came to Las Vegas did so with a purpose and a direction to get things done, and they did.  The NATPE Board would like to guide and strengthen NATPE with a digital agenda, though on its own NATPE is evolving in another direction – international, as evidenced in part by the strong and large contingency from Latin America.  On the third day of the convention this year, most of the people I know who work on the domestic side have headed home.  Those still here are the internationals, taking meetings, making deals.  Next year’s convention is in Miami, further bolstering the international attendance from Latin America and Puerto Rico, and there is chatter the Europeans will find their way to Florida as well.  That being the case, wouldn’t it be interesting if NATPE could fully evolve into essentially a US-based MIPCOM, a market known for the intense focus of buyers and sellers, and one where a lot of deals are done.  If NATPE can find its sea legs in Miami, then perhaps US buyers will find a reason to return to this annual show.  And by the way, the guys suggesting a strict T-shirt and shorts dress code for the Miami conference, I concur.  But that’s just my opinion.  (Maybe you agree, maybe you think I’m an idiot, or a combination of the two. If you’d like to comment, please do and I’ll post a representative group here starting tomorrow.  Send your comment to me at [email protected] and put Email to the Editor in the subject line.)

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Time Warner Cable Inc. and Scripps Networks settled on a multi-year agreement involving the carriage of Food Network and Great American Country. The previous deal had expired on December 31 and both entities had agreed on extending their original agreements while terms were being worked out. Details on the financial terms were not divulged.

Veria TV, showcasing original wellness and lifestyle programming and available via the DISH Network and Verizon FiOS, will premiere three new shows this year.

  • Hot on the Trail – Series travels on cross-country adventures, showing viewers how to identify wild foods and create foods in the outdoors.
  • Fun to Grow On – Teaches parents and child care givers ideas on how to get children moving and exercising.
  • Labor of Love – Follows real life experiences of midwives and expectant parents who have chosen a natural childbirth.

ExerciseTV made a deal with The Hotel Networks (THN), a subsidiary of LodgeNet Interactive Corporation involving its library of free on-demand workout programming. The terms of the deal allows ExerciseTV’s fitness videos to be available monthly on-demand for free via the in-room interactive television services in more than 1.1 million hotel rooms nationwide

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

The CW is joining the pilot pick-up wave by acquiring two new projects. Nikita is a revamped version of the spy film/former TV series, La Femme Nikita. In the pilot script, the title heroine has gone rogue so a new “Nikita” is being trained to replace her. Craig Silverstein will write and executive produce with McG and Peter Johnson also executive producing. Warner Bros. Television and Wonderland are producing the pilot. The second pilot is The Wyoming Project, a family soap set on a horse farm in either the Midwest or the Rocky Mountains. Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino are writing and executive producing; Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios are producing.

NBC is moving forward with a 60m pilot called Justice produced by Universal Media Studios and Conan O’Brien’s banner Conaco. John Eisendrath is writing the law-themed pilot about an ex-Supreme Court justice who quits the court to form his own legal practice. Eisendrath is executive producing along with O’Brien and Jeff Ross and Conaco’s David Kissinger. NBC also picked up a multi-camera comedy pilot title The Pink House also from Universal Media Studios. The plot centers on two male friends who move to L.A. after college. Rick Weiner and Kenny Schwartz are writing; Scott Stuber is executive producing.

ABC okayed an untitled crime drama pilot from writer Richard Hatem and director Gary Fleder, cites THR. ABC Studios will produce the project about an attractive female detective who works with a disgraced ex-cop to solve crimes and the conspiracy that forced the ex-cop underground. Hatem and Fleder are executive producing along with Bert Salke and Chris Brancato.

FOX Broadcasting Company made a few executive changes within its Current Programming leadership team:

  • Shana C. Waterman and James Oh have both been upped to VPs/Current Programming. Both will manage all facets involving production and will serve as the main creative contacts for the network’s slate of new and returning series. Shana and James will report to Marcy Ross, EVP/Current Programming.

All three will report to Hank Ratner, who becomes President/CEO of MSG.

John Redpath started this Monday at Canoe Ventures as SVP/General Counsel, reporting to David Verklin, CEO. Most recently, John was Chief Legal Officer at United States Golf Association and prior to that was SVP/General Counsel at Time, Inc.
