Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 26, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
NBC Universal is going all in for its upcoming Super Bowl coverage, maximizing its brands with Spanish-language programs, kids news services, theme parks and in-flight programming to cover and promote the game. Properties that will have a live presence at the game will include Today, E! News, Access Hollywood, Top Chef, Golf Channel’s Feherty Live, and more. In addition, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon will, for the first time in the show’s history, go on the road to Indianapolis for four shows; including one live first-ever episode of the show on Sunday night after the Super Bowl.
NBC Sports Network will be on hand with more than 18 hours of live coverage including the first ever Costas Tonight: Live from the Super Bowl and daily editions of NBC SportsTalk: LIVE from the Super Bowl.
After settling the lockout and following it up with a record-setting season, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has been given a five-year contract extension that runs through the 2018 season. In a statement, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank explained “I speak on behalf of 32 NFL club owners in saying we are fortunate to have Roger Goodell as our commissioner. Since becoming commissioner in 2006, the NFL – already the leader in professional sports – has gotten even stronger.”
NFL Network has booked its own Super Bowl plans, lining up more than 60 hours of live coverage of the game and its festivities. Coverage starts on Jan. 30, with telecasts of shows such as NFL Total Access at the Super Bowl, Super Bowl Live, NFL GameDay Morning, NFL GameDay Final and The Coaches Show, as well as on-location editions of No Huddle, Playbook and The Rich Eisen Podcast. Super Bowl Sunday will feature a live 8.5-hour edition of NFL GameDay Morning beginning at 9a.
Networks are gearing up for National Signing Day on Feb. 1, and pulling out some big guns for their coverage. ESPNU will double its college campus presence for the recruiting event with 10 hours of continuous coverage, along with ESPN3, that will include reporters stationed at 13 campuses and 10 players, including four ranked number one at their position, announcing their decisions live.
CBS is countering National Signing Day with in-depth content across a slew of platforms that include CBS Sports Network, CBSSports.com, and Maxpreps.com. Both CBS Sports Network and CBSSports.com will offer eight hours of live programming. CBS Sports Network’s coverage will feature recruiting expert Tom Lemming and guest analysts that include former UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel and former Illinois coach Ron Zook. Online, CBSSports.com’s coverage will be highlighted by Bruce Feldman and recruiting expert Bryan Fischer. Coverage kicks off at 6:30p on Jan. 31 with a special edition of high school recruiting series Lemming Report.
Golf Channel announced that its series Feherty will expand to a full hour for its second season. Aside from Feherty Live at the Super Bowl on Feb. 4, the series will return to the network schedule full time beginning Feb. 27 at 10p, following The Haney Project.
ESPN President John Skipper, who took over at the beginning of the year, locked in his executive ranks for the company. Among the changes in the roster are the promotion of John Kosner to Executive Vice President, Digital and Print Media. Other changes include Executive Vice President, Programming and Acquisitions, John Wildhack and Executive Vice President, Production, Norby Williamson swapping roles, and Marie Donoghue taking being bumped up to Senior Vice President, Global Strategy, Business Development and Business Affairs.
BTN series Big Ten Icons returns on Friday with a profile of Minnesota’s Herb Brooks, who coached the 1980 Olympic hockey team’s “Miracle on Ice” after leading the Gophers to three national titles. Keith Jackson hosts and the first of six new episodes will air around 10:30p, following the Minnesota-St. Cloud State hockey game.
The Lakers announced that Adrian Marquez and Francisco Pinto have been tapped to serve as the team’s Spanish TV announcers for next season. Beginning with the 2012-13 season, Time Warner Cable will launch a Spanish language regional sports channel featuring the team.
The NFL announced the 20 current and former NFL players who will take part in the league’s first-ever “NFL Business of Music Boot Camp” at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music.
