AMC gave orders for two pilots with both beginning production this second quarter 2010. The first pilot, The Walking Dead, previously announced as a project in development, is based on the comic book series penned by Robert Kirkman about the months and years following a zombie apocalypse. Kirkman will executive produce while Frank Darabont will write, direct and executive produce. Valhalla Motion Pictures will produce with Gale Anne Hurd, Chairman also set to executive produce. David Alpert from Circle of Confusion additionally executive produces. The second project, The Killing is based on a hit Danish series called Forbrydelsen. The US rendering is set in Seattle offering up three different stories centered on a single murder from the perspective of the detectives assigned to solve the case, the victim’s family and the suspects involved. Fox Television Studios will produce with Mikkel Bondesen from Fuse Entertainment set to executive produce and Veena Sud tapped to write and executive produce. Fuse’s Kristen Campo will also co-produce.
In the last couple of days, ABC approved a handful of new hour-long pilots:
- The first is a medical drama from Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes called Off the Map about three doctors who leave the US to work in an isolated tropical clinic. Jenna Bans, co-executive producer on Grey’s Anatomy wrote the script and will be executive producer with Rhimes and Betsy Beers.
- The second project is a procedural drama titled Body of Evidence about Megan Hunt, a former neurosurgeon-turned-medical examiner who offers a unique crime-solving perspective that makes her butt heads with her bosses. Chris Murphey penned the script and is executive producing with Matt Gross.
- Cutthroat, from 20th TV, is a dramedy about an ambitious single mom who ends up heading an international drug cartel while trying to keep ahead of the cutthroat world of Beverly Hills high society. Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters are writing and executive producing.
- The fourth project is called Generation Y from ABC Studios, shot documentary style about a group of people in the present-day who flashback to 10 years ago when they were seniors in high school. This project is based on a Scandinavian series called God’s Highway from Stockholm-Copenhagen Productions. Noah Hawley penned the script and is executive producing with Warren Littlefield and Henrik Bastin, Peter Magnasson and Martin Piersson of Stockholm-Copenhagen Productions.
NBC played the pilot game by okaying a multi-camera comedy titled The Strip from Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant (both co-creators/stars of Reno 911), cites THR. The plot is about a former child star (Lennon) who owns a Hooters-type restaurant in a strip mall outside of Las Vegas. Garant will play a supporting role and both he and Lennon co-wrote the pilot script. Universal Media Studios is producing. Lennon, Garant, Peter Principato and Paul Young are all executive producing.
