CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!
03/03/06
Good morning. It’s Friday, March 3, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
TiVo has introduced KidZone, a new service designed to provide parents with more control over what their kids are watching. TiVo explained that KidZone will assist parents in identifying and selecting TV programs for their kids/family. Parents can program TiVo to automatically record, and they also have the option to create their own programming list. TiVo KidZone will let kids to watch parent selected programming, while still allowing parents to record and watch shows they want by entering a code into the TiVo box. Slated to begin rolling out mid-year to new and current subscribers with a TiVo Series2 box, TiVo KidZone will be included as part of the standard TiVo service fee.
Parents Television Council has released findings of its study, Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing: A Content Analysis of Children’s Television, that looks at TV programming for K5-10 to assess the appropriateness of the content. The programming in the study aired either after-school or on Saturday mornings on eight broadcast and expanded basic cable networks: ABC, FOX, NBC, The WB, ABC Family, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. One of the shows specifically criticized by the PTC was an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants titled Sailor Mouth, in which SpongeBob uses words throughout the show that unbeknownst to him are bad words. These words are never actually heard, but the PTC in its press release suggests specific profanities. In the end SpongeBob learns the truth and vows never to use the words again, but of course he does and is punished. A Nickelodeon spokesperson responded to the example saying, “The reference to Nickelodeon and the SpongeBob episode is beyond absurd. In their press release, they arbitrarily made up and projected profane language no children’s channel would broadcast or any media outlet could ever print and include. Who’s protecting kids from their press releases?”
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
The Weinstein Company has acquired rights in all English speaking territories to the mixed CGI animated/live-action feature film Arthur and the Minimoys, which is based on Luc Besson’s kid’s book of the same title. A well known writer/director/producer, Besson adapted the screenplay and will direct the movie. The cast features Freddie Highmore and Mia Farrow, and the voices of Madonna, Snoop Dogg, and David Bowie. Currently in production, the action/adventure movie is being produced by EuropaCorp, the film is.
The BBC has picked up an additional cycle of 13 episodes of The Basil Brush Show from Entertainment Rights Plc, bringing the total number of episodes of the series to 65. Under the agreement the show will continue to air on the BBC beyond 2010. In the new season Basil Brush will for the first time in the series appear as an animated character. The animated segments will be used both on TV as well as online, as downloads, in games and so on. The series will be available for international markets at MIPCOM this October.
TV-Loonland has acquired the worldwide rights for Little Princess, a preschool series based on the picture books by Tony Ross. Produced by The Illuminated Film Company, Little Princess will premiere in the UK on Five’s pre-school programming block Milkshake! in fall 2006. Additionally, Little Princess has broadcast deals with ZDF (Germany) and ABC (Australia). EMI Music Publishing has picked up the worldwide music publishing rights to the series, which will feature the voices of Julian Clary and Jane Horrocks (Little Voice, Absolutely Fabulous).
