~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

HDNet, owned by Mark Cuban, will be rebranded as AXS TV (pronounced “access”) as part of a new joint venture between AEG, Ryan Seacrest Media and Creative Artists Agency.  Ryan Seacrest Media will also have an ownership stake in AXS TV.  The rebranded network will launch this June and the partners involved have a deal with DISH to expand the distribution.  HDNet is presently on DISH’s HD tier and as part of the new deal a standard-def version of the network will launch and be included in DISH’s America’s Top 120 channel package.  To date, HDNet reaches 27 million homes and the expanded DISH deal will take AXS TV’s distribution to more than 35 million.  Content on AXS TV will include lifestyle programming, as well as concerts, music festivals, red carpet premieres, award shows, parties, pop culture events and in-depth interviews.  Select HDNet programming including HDNet Fights, Inside MMA, Dan Rather Reports, Sunday concert series and more will continue to air on AXS TV. 

A double batch of royal romance series will premiere on TLC when Undercover Princes opens at January 31 at 10p followed a month later by Undercover Princesses on February 28 at 10p.  The two series follow six royal heirs from countries including Germany, South Africa, Uganda and India as they look for love without revealing their regal heritage.  The royals will also learn to cook for themselves, clean and get regular jobs without help from their servants.  TLC will air four episodes of Undercover Princes as well as four episodes of Undercover Princesses. A one-hour special is also scheduled to air March 27.  Both series originally aired in the UK on BBC Three and are produced by Objective Productions, an ALL3MEDIA Company.

SCIENCE debuts a new season of An Idiot Abroad 2: The Bucket List this Saturday at 10p.  The series stars Ricky Gervais and his friends Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington as Gervais and Merchant send Pilkington on another around the world trip to fulfill his “Bucket List.”

A fourth season of Top Shot opens on HISTORY February 14 at 10p.  In the new season, 18 competitors will battle for the Top Shot title.  Pilgrim Studios produces the series for HISTORY.

2012 Upfront Update:  Discovery U.S. Hispanic, encompassing Discovery en Espanol and Discovery Familia, will host its Upfront presentation at The Times Center in New York on May 15 at 330p.  The presentation will include programming details for both networks.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Worldwide independent distribution company Echo Bridge Entertainment acquired the international distribution rights for the drama series, The L.A. Complex from Epitome Pictures.  The new, original scripted series was just picked up recently by The CW and will premiere this summer.

Trifecta Entertainment & Media made a two-year deal to bring TNT’s drama Leverage to the CBS-owned stations in 13 markets beginning fall 2012.  The drama from Electric Entertainment was recently renewed for a fifth season on TNT and will air on weekends on WCBS/New York; KCAL-KCBS/Los Angeles; WBBM/Chicago; KYW-WPSG/Philadelphia; KTVT-KTXA/Dallas; KPIX-KBCW/San Francisco; WBZ-WSBK/Boston; WUPA/Atlanta; WWJ-WKBD/Detroit; KSTW/Seattle; WCCO/Minneapolis; WPCW/Pittsburgh; and WJZ/Baltimore.

Outdoor Channel said its hi-def channel Outdoor Channel HD is now available in the top 25 markets in the US after launching on Cox Communications Arizona which covers Phoenix and Tucson. 

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

FOX okayed a spy drama pilot from Josh Friedman titled The Asset.  20th Century Fox is producing the project about a female agent set in the New York office of the CIA. 

A two-hour action/thriller pilot titled Rewind from BermanBraun and Universal Cable Productions was approved by Syfy.  The project is about a team of military field operatives and civilian scientists who must use untested technology to travel back in time to change past events to prevent a horrible terrorist attack.  Justin Marks wrote the pilot and will be executive producer along with Tom Spezialy, Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein.  Production on Rewind commences this April. 

Casting Call:  The producers behind such shows as Dirty Jobs, Top Shot and Ghost Hunters are casting for a new scavenger hunt competition show.  The show is looking for teams of two, three and four people from the Los Angeles area to participate in a four-day, filmed scavenger hunt in L.A. to win a cash prize.  All kinds of team are welcome to apply from co-workers, business partners, families, sports teammates, best friends and siblings.  Producers are auditioning teams this week so send an email right away to: [email protected] and include the following information: names and ages of everyone in the team; phone numbers; city/state in which you all reside (all team members must live within the L.A. area); explain how the team members know each other and why you make a good team; and include a few photos of you and your team.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS commanded a huge lead Saturday night at 11.7/31 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, CBS was in charge with a combo of the NFL Today and the start of the AFC Divisional Playoff game at 7.8/22 and FOX’s Post-Game NFC Playoff coverage was next at 3.6/10.  CBS led big at 9p with the AFC Divisional Playoff game at 14.1/37 while ABC’s Miss America special was a distant #2 at 1.6/4.  CBS’ AFC Divisional Playoff game ratings tapered off some though were still way out in front during 10p at 11.7/31 and ABC’s Miss America pageant continued in second place at 2.1/6.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX secured a win Sunday with the A18-49 viewers at 8.9/21, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  FOX overwhelmed the competition at 7p with its NFC Playoff Post-Game coverage at 17.4/45 with CBS’ 60 Minutes next at 1.5/4.  At 8p, FOX with a combination of The Simpsons and the premiere of Napoleon Dynamite at an average of 4.9/12 (Napoleon Dynamite posted a 4.4/10 at 830p) tied for #1 with NBC’s Golden Globe Awards also delivering a 4.9/12 while ABC’s Once Upon a Time was third at 3.3/8 and the season opener of Undercover Boss on CBS was fourth at 3.0/7.  NBC eclipsed the other networks to win the 9p hour with the Golden Globe Awards at 5.1/12 and FOX’s animated sitcoms Family Guy and Napoleon Dynamite averaged a 3.9/9 in second place and ABC’s Desperate Housewives ranked third at 2.7/6.  Then at 10p, the Golden Globes on NBC did best at 5.2/13 and CBS’ CSI: Miami repeat was next at 1.5/4 trailed by ABC’s Pan Am in third at 1.2/3.

Monday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS had the winning lineup Monday night at 3.8/9 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  CBS’ comedies How I Met Your Mother and 2 Broke Girls won at 8p with an average of 4.5/11 and the two-hour series premiere of Alcatraz on FOX was #2 at 3.3/8 and the Betty White 90th Birthday special on NBC ranked third at 2.7/7.  More of CBS’ sitcoms, Two and a Half Men and Mike & Molly averaged a first place showing at 9p with a 4.2/10 and Alcatraz on FOX continued in second place at 3.4/8 and the combo of Betty White’s birthday special and the preview of Off Their Rockers averaged a third place at 2.8/7 for NBC.  CBS topped the 10p hour with Hawaii Five-O at 2.8/7 followed by ABC’s Castle at 2.2/6.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Roger Eman was named COO at REELZCHANNEL.  Roger has been part of the network’s executive management team since joining in 2007. 

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. (MSLO) hired Peter Medwid as SVP/Publisher for Martha Stewart Living.  Peter joins MSLO from Time Inc.  The move to hire Peter is part of MSLO’s strategic plans to align its sales and marketing team around its magazine brands including Everyday Food, Whole Living and Martha Stewart Weddings.

CBS Television Stations group tapped Joel Goldberg as SVP/Operations.  Joel has served as SVP/Operations at WCBS-TV, the company’s flagship station since March 2006.  In his new capacity, Joel will take on more duties working with the local management teams at the 27 other CBS-owned stations nationwide.  Joel will also become the station group’s programming contact with the management teams at the CBS Television Network, CBS Entertainment and CBS Sports.
