Cynopsis: DIGITAL

01/14/10

Good morning, it’s Thursday, January 14, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Nintendo announced that it will finally integrate with Netflix‘s Watch Instantly service on the Wii, meaning that owners of the wildly popular gaming platform will be able to stream movies and TV shows through the console to their TV sets for as little as $9/month beginning this spring. The deal may be Netflix’s biggest integration deal to date, as the Wii has proved to be the most popular advanced gaming platform in the U.S. (26 million units sold to date including 3 million during an otherwise sluggish Dec.) The Wii has brought a broad swath of casual, non-rabid gamers to its platform, users that may not be aware of Netflix’s previous platform integrations. As with the PS3, Wii owners will need to request a free disc from Netflix that will load the software to initiate the feature. Unfortunately, the device will only support standard-def streaming.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Comcast has launched ESPN on Demand, the cable operator announced yesterday. The new service will include NCAA college basketball, FIFA World Cup matches, selections from ESPN’s ’30 for 30′ documentary series as well as content from this year’s Winter X Games 14 in Aspen, Colo.

Fremantle Corp. licensed long-running daytime drama All My Children to Seven Network’s digital channel, 7TWO, in Australia. Episodes are slated to premiere beginning Jan. 18.

Exercise TV announced it has increased distribution of its VOD service to 37 million homes in 2009.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

NDS subsidiary CastUP launched a video delivery solution for the iPhone per iTVT, providing a framework for adaptively streaming video to be delivered via multiple formats including live broadcast and VOD.

Are there any Apple engineers out there who didn’t get as big a Christmas bonus as they had hoped? Gawker’s tech-themed Valleywag blog is offering a bounty of up to $100,000 for access to an authentic prototype of Apple’s secret tablet device, widely expected to be unveiled to the public on Jan. 27. Valleywag, which will pay $10k for photos, $20k for a video demo and $50k for pictures or photos of Steve Jobs holding one, promises to keep the identity of contributors a secret. (This should bring out some creative use of Photoshop, at least.)

Looking to give rather than receive? The American Red Cross has set up a text message donation account enabling anyone in the US to text HAITI to 90999 to donate $10 to the recovery effort. The fully deductible donation will be billed to your mobile phone account.

Music fans are being encouraged to vote for which Bon Jovi song they’d like to hear during the Grammy Awards telecast on Jan. 31. Beginning this week, viewers can log on to cbs.com/grammys to vote for one out of six of their favorite Bon Jovi hits. The Recording Academy is also conducting an extensive social media campaign this year, encouraging fans to post on the organization’s Twitter, Facebook or YouTube channels or upload images to Grammy.com.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Hoping to tap into a renewed enthusiasm for mobile video ads, mobile advertising start-up iVdopia is rolling out a more advanced suite of mobile ad products enabling brand advertisers to embed interactive features into their video ads. Talk2Me, launching initially for the iPhone with an Android solution also in the works, enables calls to action, direct sharing via Facebook or Twitter or requests for more info and each response is trackable within the interface. So far iVdopia’s clients have included game developers and movie studios, according to co-founder Srikanth Kakani.

During an otherwise down year, online video ad solution Videoegg announced that its revenues doubled in 2009 to $25 million, helping the start-up to reach profitability 7 months ago. VideoEgg says it delivers more than 1 billion impressions/month reaching an estimated 100 million global users.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Google‘s threat to shut down its Chinese web site because of censorship concerns echoed across the world wide web yesterday, but the details of the move were omitted from many of the published Chinese language reports before being removed altogether, per the NYTimes. Google’s announcement drew praise from free speech and human rights advocates, many of whom had criticized the company over its decision to enter the Chinese market in the first place. Meanwhile, the potential exit of Google from the Chinese search market leaves competitors salivating over it’s 80 million user/30% market share. Homegrown Baidu, Bing and Yahoo will compete to fill the void.

Internet Broadcasting signed a services agreement with Maranatha Broadcasting’s Allentown, PA-based WFMZ-TV to provide web platform, content and distribution, professional services, and local digital marketing services.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Wiredset’s social media tracking tool Trendrr has partnered with Klout, a platform for measuring the influence of trending topics/individuals in social media. The deal will integrate Klout’s data into Trendrr’s dashboard, providing users with an additional layer of “influencer” metrics as well as a deeper set of actionable intelligence.

On demand mobile and internet measurement firm Keynote Systems unveiled a new on demand service for real-time monitoring of web site visitor feedback and interactions. The integrated Visitor Insights application tracks visitor attitudes as well as behaviors and provides the apparatus to compile monthly insight reports.

Google’s lead over search competitors grew in December from the previous month, according to Nielsen, increasing from 65.4% to 67.3%. Both Yahoo’s share (15.3% in Nov.) and Bing’s share (10.7% in Nov.) dropped significantly during the month.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

CBS Mobile and CBS Television Stations announced they are launching stand-alone iPhone news apps for CBS O&Os in 13 markets. Developed by Treemo on the Transpera video/ad platform, the localized apps will provide local news, breaking national and global news, video clips and Twitter updates from station anchors and reporters. Participating stations include WCBS-New York, KCBS/KCAL-Los Angeles, WBBM-Chicago, KYW-Philadelphia, WBZ-Boston, KPIX-San Francisco, KTVT-Dallas/Fort Worth, WCCO-Minneapolis/St. Paul, WFOR-Miami, KCNC-Denver, KOVR-Sacramento, KDKA-Pittsburgh and WJZ-Baltimore.

Fox Cable Network’s Fuel TV launched its first free iPhone app enabling users to Tweet and upload their own action sports photos (no video?). The app, which has been downloaded more than 20k times since Dec. 17, features content syndicated from the Fuel.tv website including 9 video podcast channels and updates from Fuel TV’s blogs. Future updates will allow for streaming of live events and enable downloads of a selection of Fuel TV shows.

I guess you’re never to young to have a gadget marketed to you. Columbia, SC-based Nuvo Group USA released the Ritmo Advanced Pregnancy Sound System, enabling expectant moms to play music to their little one inside the womb. The Ritmo, which comes with a lightweight belt with 4 speakers and a controller moms strap around their belly, can connect to most audio devices with a universal stereo plug, including iPods, MP3 players, iPhones and Blackberries. The idea is if you’re in a noisy or stressful environment, you can play recordings of Dad reading a book, mom singing a lullaby or other peaceful sounds to your fetus.

BravoTV.com
debuted the “Launch Your Line” online contest in an effort to promote the network’s newest fashion creative competition series of the same name airing Wed. at 10 pm ET/PT. Using the “Launch My Line Drawing Tool,” users will be able to create T-shirt designs based on the phrase “by Bravo,” for the chance to win $500 and the opportunity for their t-shirt to be made and sold on Bravotv.com.

Founder and digital video veteran Rob Glaser is stepping down as CEO of Seattle-based RealNetworks. The news comes a day after Real announced that John Giamatteo, the company’s COO had resigned.

eMusic, one of the more promising digital music competitors to the iTunes store that offers 25 free downloads to new members, signed its second major music label this week. After striking a deal with Sony, the digital music club is adding artists (although not new releases) from Warner Music Group to its now 7.5 million-track catalog, including titles from WMG’s Atlantic Records, Rhino Records and Warner Bros. Records. eMusic’s model is based on monthly subscription fees that give users a volume discount for promising to funnel a certain amount into their music collection; for $12/month, users can buy 24 songs – half the price of what you’d pay on iTunes per track. Apple seemed to express interest in offering a subscription or streaming option when it purchased browser-based music streaming start-up Lala last year. Many expect iTunes to adopt some of Lala’s features in the coming weeks, including the ability to share names of tracks on Facebook and Twitter.
