Good Morning, it’s Thursday, January 11, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
After a good deal of changes at Paramount Pictures over the past year and a half, including the CBS/Viacom split, acquisition of Dreamworks in late 2005, comes news of yet another reorganization that will divide film production among four separate units – Paramount, Paramount Vantage, MTV Films/Nick and Dreamworks. The upshot of that reorganization – Gail Berman will leave as the President/Paramount Pictures, and all the heads of each of the four units will now report directly to Brad Grey, Chairman/CEO of Paramount Pictures. No word on Berman’s next move.
Tonight’s Premiere:
A&E: First 48 at 9p
USA: Nashville Star at 10p
Tonight’s Finale:
BBC America: No Angels at 10p
While nothing official has been announced, who is the newest talk show host coming to syndication …. Steve Wilkos! Steve Wilkos? Oh, you know him – he’s Jerry Springer’s hair-challenged bodyguard and head of security on Jerry’s show, who from time to time would fill in for Springer for particular segments. NBC Universal has this project and others currently in development, tho there is no official word which, if any, will in truth move forward, which makes sense because NBCU doesn’t comment on development speculation.
Also – WCBS Radio in NYC reports there’s a talk show host in our midst in NY – Westchester County DA Jeanine Pirro is said to be signed for either a court show or a daytime talker. No official word on a distributor, but rumors abound it’s Warner Bros. Reports in the NY area are Pirro has already signed the deal and has already received a $1 million paycheck. As you might expect, Warner Bros. doesn’t comment on development speculation either.
This March Discovery Channel will launch an 11-part series called Planet Earth in hi-def. The series promises to show viewers never-before-seen animal behaviors, view of locations captured by cameras for the first time, and narrated by Sigourney Weaver. Planet Earth is produced by the BBC, and will air on successive Sundays on both Discovery Channel and Discovery HD Theatre, beginning March 25.
National Geographic Channel will debut a new 13-episode season of Taboo in 2nd quarter. Taboo showcase the various customs, practices and rituals from around the world that shock, pain, confuse or sometimes delight us. The upcoming season of Taboo is produced by Beyond Productions.
Yvonne DeCarlo, who many younger TV viewers only know as Lily Munster, has died from natural causes at the age of 84. DeCarlo’s career extended well beyond the 1960’s sitcom. Her film career began back in 1941 with numerous uncredited roles over a time span of 2-4 years. By the mid 1940’s, she was getting an on-screen credit and working regularly in a wide variety of B movies. Perhaps her biggest role of her career was that of Sephora, the wife of Moses opposite Charlton Heston in The Ten Commandments in 1956. She appeared in several single episodes of television series as a guest performer including Burke’s Law, Death Valley Days, Bonanza and later Fantasy Island.
MTV Networks and Amp’d Mobile have agreed to work together to bring original episodic content created specifically and exclusively for Amp’d. This deal marks the first time a content provider and a mobile entertainment provider have decided to create programming specifically for a handset. All of the programming created under this deal will appear on the MTV Network’s channels on Amp’d Live.
Cartoon Networks’ Adult Swim has ordered a pilot for an untitled project about a computer programmer who is sucked into his computer and onto the information highway – the internet. In a mix of animation and live-action, and according to Hollywood Reporter, the project is based on an online series of shorts titled Gemberling where 8 episodes were produced. The project is from John Gemberling, who will also play the computer programmer; and Curtis Gwinn, who also plays an internet bounty hunter sent to find him by an evil CEO.
A new reality show for cable network TV One – a competition series called David E. Talbert’s Backstage, where aspiring actors compete for a role in the touring cast of a play called Love in the Nick of Tyme, written by David E. Talbert. The show follows the touring company, and 10 actors who are all vying for the understudies roles. During the course of the 8 episodes, the group of actor wannabes will be cut by both Talbert and actor Blair Underwood, who is also an executive producer. Eventually, the final two will be hired as understudies for the remaining tour. Backstage will be produced by Edmonds Entertainment.
Sci Fi Channel has ordered a pilot called Destination Truth, a six episode series with host Josh Gates, travels to various destinations around the globe where reported sci fi phenomena has occurred, per Hollywood Reporter. Gates’ mission is to determine the truth to each location – was there really something significant that happened here, or merely a set up of coincidences that lead to an ill-conceived conclusion? The show is expected to be added to the schedule in 2nd qtr 2007.
ABC has ordered five episodes of a new reality series called Dream Vote from Mike Fleiss and Next Entertainment. The project has been fast-tracked and could show up on the primetime schedule as early as February 2007, says Variety. The idea of the show sounds a little like Queen for a Day – a half dozen people will stand before the audience and tell them what their big dream is and why it should be fulfilled. The dreams aren’t necessarily impossible pie-in-the-sky stuff like I want to be a Star!, but rather a little more homegrown – I want a better house for my family, or I’d love to have my own in-house media center. The studio audience takes care of the first couple of rounds of eliminations, but the final choice is left to the TV viewing audience. The final result will be revealed the following week.
Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. has named Beth Goss as EVP/Cartoon Network’s Ad Sales, Marketing and Enterprises group, effective January 29. Reporting to David Levy, President/Turner Entertainment Ad Sales and Marketing and President/Turner Sports, Beth will be based in New York.
Atlanta-based promotion agency GREAT! has upped Donna Britt to GREAT! Marketing Director in the Nashville office and Nicole Yoder to GREAT! Marketing Director in the Atlanta office. GREAT! is known for its television and entertainment industry buzz marketing campaigns and brand activating travel experiences.
Amy Bloebaum has been promoted to VP/Media & Artists Relations, Island Def Jam Music Group. She will be responsible for on-camera opportunities and performances for IDJ artists on non-traditional televised outlets, including prime time shows, sports and cable programs, and other tv specials. She will work in tandem with the Publicity and Marketing Departments in the development of tv and artist placement campaigns. Amy reports to Laura Swanson, SVP/Media & Artist Relations, Island Def Jam Music Group.
Telemundo has named Susan Solano to SVP/Consumer Marketing, based in Miami, reporting to Antoinette Zel, Sr. EVP/Network Strategy for Telemundo. Susan will be the strategic, creative guide responsible for the overall definition, execution, and implementation of marketing strategies and tactics for the Telemundo broadcast network brand and programming properties. She is charged with generating off-air and online marketing strategies including but not limited to events, advertising and media planning, station collaboration, and contests/sweepstakes.
