Good morning, it’s Thursday, January 10, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing, coming to you from the CES convention in Las Vegas.
Talk around the show yesterday centered on the massive layoffs being announced around the linear media world. Time Warner’s Warner Bros. film and TV studio indicated it may have to lay off as many as 1,000 workers because of the writers strike, beginning as soon as Jan. 18. McGraw-Hill said it will begin to reduce costs by eliminating 611 positions. The Chicago-Sun Times and The Seattle Times are both paring their ranks. Even Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia is proceeding with more layoffs, following a series of job cuts in December.
Time Warner is buying into the virtual reality craze, agreeing to acquire teen-target Gaia Online for an undisclosed amount. Gaia has been a hot property since launching a self contained virtual reality Gaia OMG minisite on social network Bebo. The site reports it has nearly 3 million unique monthly users who spend more than $1 million on virtual goods per month.
The Belo station group struck a deal with Yahoo to become the exclusive provider of local video news content to Yahoo! News in all 13 of its markets except Dallas and Boise. Belo first partnered with Yahoo in 2005 sharing job listings with the HotJobs site.
National Lampoon acquired collegiate user generated humor site CollegeHangover.com moderated by student editors. The site, part of “the Drunk University Network,” attracts over 6 million unique users a month, according to ComScore.
ACCSelect.com announced an exclusive partnership with Raycom Sports to distribute online video streaming of more than 30 regular season conference games to their regional fan-base. All 34 games will be available to watch live and on-demand on ACCSelect.com exclusively within ACC market DMAs.
USA Network launched a series of “pod-busting” animated vignettes based on its original drama Psych. The Big Adventures of Little Shawn and Gus vignettes will run 50 seconds to 2 minutes and will be supported on-air via promos and snipes as well as online with advance teases.
Scripps Network‘s real estate-themed frontdoor.com unveiled three new exclusive online video series. Savvy Woman Homebuyer offers tips on buying a home. Cool Houses Daily spotlights three new homes for sale each day. Rewrap covers real estate trends.
Worldwide Biggies Inc., has a new mockumentary webisode series now playing on MTVN’s GameTrailers.com and Spike.com that might appeal to the CES crowd. MoCap, LLC takes a silly look at the inner workings of a small motion capture company. In this one they’re working on a video game based on The Exorcist.
FCC chairman Kevin Martin warned Comcast that the commission plans to investigate charges that the ISP was restricting access of subscribers who frequent P2P download sites during his chat with CEA CEO Gary Shapiro at CES this week. Comcast has repeatedly denied violating so called “net neutrality” guidelines.
Supporters of the WirelessHD standard developed by Sibeam, Inc. including Toshiba and Panasonic are showcasing a variety of wireless high-definition multimedia products at CES this week, designed to eliminate the rat’s nest of wires required to connect cable set tops and media players to today’s TV sets. The standard uses a 60 Ghz spectrum to transfer HD quality content between devices.
MusicGiants entered into a distribution deal with Paramount Pictures Digital Entertainment to distribute feature films from the Paramount library through their new VideoGiants home theater digital content delivery platform. Titles such as Mission Impossible and Braveheart will be offered via direct download into any media server using the MG MediaStore interface.
Life|ware launched two such Windows Media Center-based server products which can be used to store digital content in the home. The entry-level LMS-100 features a DVD drive and 500 GB of storage, retailing for $2,500.
Gemstar-TV Guide renewed its licensing agreement with Sony USA to integrate its TV Guide On Screen IPG into Sony’s primary line of television products. Sony USA is the first partner to employ hybrid integration, meaning Gemstar-TV Guide’s IPG will be built directly into Sony’s custom user interface and be made immediately available for consumer use.
The BET Digital Media Group unveiled a vertical advertising network consisting of more than 30 music, entertainment and lifestyle websites targeting African American users. The demographic is the second largest online minority group after Hispanics with 22.7 million users, according to Jupiter Research.
Bravo lined up a number of multiplatform sponsors for its newest competition reality series Make Me a Supermodel, including new interactive window displays installed in Rockefeller Center sponsored by primary partner Alltell Wireless. Alltell will also sponsor live voting for the show as well as an online game on the series website BravoTV.com.

iRobot’s iLooj – a robotic gutter cleaner that will clean a stretch of gutter in 10 minutes
Toshiba’s TDP-EW25U wireless DLP projector – produces 60″ picture from 2.4 feet away
Logitech DiNovo – a wireless handheld keyboard used to navigate PC media on a TV
Electric-Spin’s Golf Launchpad Tour – a golf simulation allowing users to play w/real clubs
Fujitsu’s U810 WWAN – an ultra-mobile PC with state-of-the-art connectivity
Canada’s mtv.ca and muchmusic.com combined total of 120 million video streams last year, consisting of a combined total of 360 per cent over 2006. Video streaming of shows such as The Hills on mtv.ca accounted for 80% of site activity in 2007.
Kirkland, WA.-based Trifilm Productions and a host of celebrities helped send Bill Gates off the stage at CES this year with a laugh. Director Mark Dickison spent seven weeks traversing the country to get the cameos taped, and really helped Bill perfect his comic timing. Bill’s Last Day, screened during the retiring Microsoft chairman’s last CES keynote, is filled with humor and genuine affection for the godfather of the software industry and is a celebration of nerds everywhere.
