CBS picked up a ninth season of NCIS for the 2011-2012 season on the heels of Tuesday’s broadcast which set a series record at 22.85 million total viewers.  NCIS is also television’s #1 drama/scripted series for the second year in a row.  Presently in its eighth season, NCIS is averaging 19.60 million viewers.

NBC trimmed its order for newer series The Cape to 10 episodes after a few weeks of struggling ratings.  Originally, NBC ordered 13 episodes of the drama about a superhero.

The fifth and final season of Friday Night Lights will debut on NBC April 15 at 8p.  DirecTV is currently airing the high school football drama and will air the series finale next Wednesday.  In 2008, NBC and DirecTV struck a deal to save the drama series allowing DirecTV to air new episodes first followed by NBC.  Then in 2009, NBC ordered two additional seasons with 13-episodes each to carry on the agreement with DirecTV.

Animal Planet renewed two series, giving third season orders to Confessions: Animal Hoarding and Pit Bulls and Parolees.  Confessions: Animal Hoarding, producing by GRB Entertainment, will be back in third quarter 2011 while the new season of Pit Bulls and Parolees, produced by 44 Blue premieres during fourth quarter 2011.  Additionally, the January 22 season two finale of Pit Bulls and Parolees tallied 1.3 million total viewers, making it the series’ most-watched episode ever among certain demos including 704,000 A25-54 viewers.

Oxygen wants more of its dating competition series Love Games: Bad Girls Need Love Too as a second season debuts April 18 at 10p.  During the second season hosted by “Bad Girl” Tanisha Thomas (from season two of The Bad Girls Club), three other former “Bad Girls”  Natalie (season 4), Amber B. (season 3) and Lea (season 5) will compete while looking for their perfect man. Bunim-Murray Productions produces the series.

TLC commissioned a new series, Outrageous Kid Parties launching the four-episode, half-hour series on February 21 at 930p.  The series showcases families who think nothing of spending a small fortune on a party for their child’s birthday or graduation.

Upfront 2011:  TV One

TV One presented its first official Upfront in New York City yesterday morning. The network highlighted its new talk/variety series for Black History Month, Way Black When and also confirmed the return of several other series later this year:

  • LisaRaye: The Real McCoy produced by Evolution Media premieres this spring.
  • Donald J. Trump Presents The Ultimate Merger produced by Trump Productions LLC and Juma Entertainment debuts in the summer.
  • Unsung is back with 12 new episodes airing this spring and fall.  A. Smith & Co. produces.
  • Life After premieres 10 new episodes this summer and is produced by K2 Pictures.
  • TV One continues to be the television home of the Trumpet Awards again this year airing in the spring.

Sinclair Broadcast Group and Time Warner Cable finalized a long-term agreement yesterday allowing continued carriage of Sinclair’s 28 local stations in TWC’s 17 markets.  Financial terms were not disclosed.  The two reached an agreement in principal on January 15 with extensions following on January 22, January 28 and again yesterday when the two parties reached a consensus.

DirecTV made a short-term deal with Northwest Broadcasting in time for this weekend’s Super Bowl broadcast.  Northwest Broadcasting and DirecTV have been immersed in a retransmission-consent dispute for more than a month and yesterday the two parties agreed to turn the stations back on for four weeks while negotiations continue.  The Northwest stations involved include: KAYU/Spokane; WICZ-WBPN/Binghamton, NY; KMVU/Medford, OR; and KFFX/Yakima.

The CW ordered four pilots:

  • Hart of Dixie from Josh Schwartz (Chuck, Gossip Girl) and Stephanie Savage’s (Gossip Girl) production company, Fake Empire, centers on a young NYC doctor who inherits a medical practice in a small Southern town full of eccentric characters.
  • Awakening is a zombie spec script picked up The CW last week about two bickering sisters amidst a zombie uprising.
  • Heavenly from Rickard Hatem, co-producer of Supernatural is about a young female attorney and a former angel, Dashiel Coffee, who just became human. The two work on cases together as she saves the clients and he saves their souls.
  • Cooper and Stone centers on two intelligent young female detectives working in Chicago’s North Side.

NBC picked up two pilots: Bent is a single-camera romantic comedy from Tad Quill (Scrubs) about a type-A divorced mom who meets her opposite; and an untitled comedy project executive produced by Lorne Michaels and SNL’s Emily Spivey about a working mom, her stay-at-home husband and opinionated parents.  Both projects are produced by Universal Media Studios.

TNT tapped original actors for its updated pilot version of Dallas that focuses on the sons of J.R. Ewing and Bobby Ewing as they battle for the future of the family oil dynasty.  Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray will all reprise their original roles of J.R. Ewing, Bobby Ewing and Sue Ellen Ewing respectively.  Josh Henderson was cast to play J.R. and Sue Ellen’s son John Ross and Jordana Brewster will play Elena, who is involved in a love triangle between John Ross and Christopher, the adopted son of Bobby and Pam Ewing.  Cynthia Cidre is penning the pilot script and the characters are based on those created by David Jacobs.  Warner Horizon Television is producing with Michael M. Robin directing and executive producing the pilot.

MTV said yesterday its animated 1990s series Beavis and Butt-Head will make a comeback on the network though no official date has been set.  The Mike Judge-created series, which originally aired from 1993-1997 will return to MTV’s schedule later this year.  Also yesterday, MTV will debut its new series Teen Wolf beginning June 5 following the MTV Movie Awards.

Chris Messina (Julie & Julia) landed a role on Damages for its fourth season.  Messina will play a former decorated soldier who now is employed by a private security firm run by a corrupt CEO (John Goodman).  Season four of Damages will air on DirecTV and is set to roll out this summer.

Syfy found its stars for its two-part miniseries, Treasure Island. Eddie Izzard will play Long John Silver; Elijah Wood is cast as Ben Gunn; and Donald Sutherland will portray Flint.  Production has started on location in Puerto Rico and Ireland and Syfy will launch the miniseries early in 2012.

BBC Worldwide America made a development agreement with Toronto-based Temple Street Productions.  The two entities will work together to develop and invest in factual entertainment series targeting the US market.  To date, the duo has two projects in the works with the first project focused on one of North America’s most dangerous day-jobs; the second project centers on the life of a woman competing successfully in a man’s world.

Casting Call: Shed Media, behind ABC’s Supernanny and other programs is casting for a new docu-series about married couples who need some spice in their love life.  Producers are looking for married couples in the greater LA area with dynamic personalities, who are outgoing, attractive and ready to tell their story. Send your name, age, city, contact info, a few recent photos and a paragraph describing yourself and your marriage to Zena at: [email protected] or call 323-904-4680.  Deadline for submissions is February 25.
