Tonight’s Premiere:
MTV: I Just Want My Pants Back at 11p
New character-driven police drama NYC 22 will make its series premiere on CBS April 15 at 10p, replacing CSI: Miami on Sunday nights which will have completed its full run of new episodes for the season. NYC 22 stars Terry Kinney, Adam Goldberg, Leelee Sobieski, Stark Sands, Judy Marte, Harold “House” Moore, Tom Reed and Felix Solis and follows six different NYPD rookies as they patrol the streets of upper Manhattan. Executive producers are Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, Richard Price, Ken Sanzel and James Mangold; the series is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Tribeca Productions. Richard Price created NYC 22. As of April 15, CBS’ Sunday schedule includes: 60 Minutes at 7p; The Amazing Race at 8p; The Good Wife at 9p; and NYC 22 at 10p.
PBS unveiled its Black History Month programming plans including several documentaries and programs profiling the culture and contributions of African Americans throughout this month (check local listings). A sampling of PBS’ February programming slate includes: Independent Lens offering three new shows with the first starting tonight with Daisy Bates: The First Lady of Little Rock at 10p; then Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 on February 9 at 10p; and More Than a Month on February 16 at 10p. Underground Railroad: The William Still Story will air February 6 at 10p, exploring one man’s mission to help slaves escape to freedom and the documentary film Slavery By Another Name is scheduled for February 13 at 9p. PBS’ programs Frontline, American Masters and Great Performances all will have Black History Month special programs in February.
MSNBC will roll out the new weekend program Melissa Harris-Perry helmed by MSNBC contributor, author and Tulane professor Melissa Harris-Perry on February 18 at 10a. The new program, focusing on national politics and factoring in culture, arts and community issues through panel discussions, will air live from 10a to noon on Saturdays and Sundays.
This spring, CNN International launches Amanpour, the new half-hour series anchored by Christiane Amanpour. The series will air at 3p and repeat at 5p weeknights in the US (in primetime throughout Europe). CNNi’s new lineup will begin with Amanpour followed by International Desk, Quest Means Business, Connect the World with Becky Anderson, Piers Morgan Tonight in addition to a new weekday program anchored by Isha Sesay. Last December, Amanpour announced she was leaving ABC and her role as anchor of ABC’s This Week to launch Amanpour. She will maintain a role at ABC.
The day before Valentine’s, Discovery Channel debuts new competition series World’s Toughest Trucker on February 13 at 10p directly after the season premiere of American Chopper at 9p. Dragonfly Productions and GroupM Entertainment are behind World’s Toughest Trucker.
Showtime granted new season pick-ups of Shameless, House of Lies and Californication. Production on season three of Shameless, season two of House of Lies and season six of Californication will begin in Los Angeles later this year.
A second season of Flip Men was approved by Spike TV. The network picked up to 12 episodes of the original non-scripted series featuring Utah-based Doug Clark and Mike Baird as they buy and flip foreclosed property. The production schedule and debut date for season two will be announced soon. Flip Men is produced by 25/7 Productions and is shot on location in Salt Lake City.
Season six of Army Wives returns to Lifetime’s lineup starting March 4 at 9p. Immediately following at 10p, Lifetime will air new episodes of the docu-series Coming Home from RelativityREAL, LLC highlighting US armed forces service members’ surprise family reunions hosted by Matt Rogers. The sixth season of Army Wives, from ABC Studios, brings back series regulars Kim Delaney, Sally Pressman, Brigid Brannagh, Brian McNamarra, Sterling K. Brown, Wendy Davis, Drew Fuller, Terry Serpico and Catherine Bell. Army Wives also welcomes former All My Children star Susan Lucci who makes several guest star appearances as Audrey, the wife of a retired Brigadier General and reunites her with her former AMC co-star Delaney.
Beginning next Monday, RLTV premieres new weekly series Your Life Redefined at 1130a. Television health expert, Dr. Anna Marie hosts the half-hour series offering better living tips to bring balance and fulfillment to viewers’ lives.
The second half of the eight-episode series, Prophets of Science is back on SCIENCE starting February 15 at 10p. From Ridley Scott, the series explores the creative and scientific genius behind such sci-fi storytellers as Isaac Asimov to Jules Verne. Prophets of Science is produced by RDI Productions and Go Go Luckey Productions.
Marking Black History Month, GMC TV debuts the GMC World Premiere Movie, A Cross to Bear on February 18 at 7p with encore airings at 9p and 11p. GMC will additionally air the music special, The 27th Annual Stellar Awards Show, celebrating accomplishments in gospel music on February 11 at 7p with encore airings at 9p and 11p. Throughout February, GMC will also air movies and gospel music performances featuring Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Kim Fields, Andre Braugher, Charles S. Dutton, Mario Van Peebles, Dorinda Clark Cole among others.
Creator and longtime host of Soul Train, Don Cornelius, died yesterday morning at the age of 75. Mr. Cornelius launched Soul Train in Chicago in 1970. Soul Train and Mr. Cornelius is credited with introducing and showcasing some of the greatest African American artists such as Gladys Knight & The Pips, Al Green, The Commodores, Kool and the Gang, En Vogue and many more. Soul Train went on to become one of the longest-running syndicated shows in television. Mr. Cornelius exited Soul Train as host in 1993.
- A statement on the passing of Don Cornelius was released by Debra L. Lee, Chairman/CEO of BET Networks: “We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Don Cornelius. He was a pioneer in the television and music industries and his legacy and influence on American culture will continue to live on for many generations to come. We owe so much of our success to him, he built the space for the creation of a BET, built a platform for the music that our audience loves and gave a voice to countless artists that shaped black culture and beyond his impact can’t be measured. He will be missed, but remembered at every wedding, party and family reunion forever with the enduring Soul Train line.”
BET Networks furthermore will air special programming honoring Don Cornelius: tonight BET airs Soul Train Awards 2011 at 8p and also tonight Centric’s 24-hour marathon of Soul Train episodes continue (it began the previous night). Centric will also air the Soul Train Awards 2011 this Friday at 9p and the Soul Train Awards 2010 will air Saturday at 10p. This weekend, Centric will air two 12-hour Soul Train Marathons at 10a on Saturday and 9a on Sunday.
Bounce TV will pay tribute to the late Don Cornelius with Bounce TV Remembers Don Cornelius, a seven-hour marathon of Soul Train episodes this Saturday beginning at 7p. Chilli from TLC will host the marathon of Soul Train episodes including the very first syndicated episode from 1971 and others from the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s.
Sewee Entertainment now handles the domestic and international distribution for the new half-hour talk/variety series, Jose Feliciano Show. The series will combine a lively talk format with musical numbers in both Spanish and English. The show has a scheduled fall 2012 launch with 26 original episodes.
ABC picked up a four-pack of new one-hour pilots: Gotham centers on a female copy that discovers a magical world within New York City. Michael Green is the EP through 20th Century Fox Television. The second pilot is Zero Hour from ABC Studios about an editor of a skeptics magazine who is drawn into one of the most compelling conspiracies in human history. Paul Scheuring is the writer and EP along with Lorenzo DiBonaventura and Dan McDermott. Pilot number three is from Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry titled Devious Maids and based on a Mexican format. Devious Maids is a soap about four maids with ambition and dreams of their own as they work for the rich and famous in Beverly Hills. Cherry is the writer and EP through ABC Studios; Sabrina Wind is also an EP. The fourth project is Penoza based on a Dutch format about the widow of an assassinated criminal who is forced to adopt her husband’s part in a crime syndicate in order to protect her family. Melissa Rosenberg is the writer/EP via ABC Studios. Endemol Studios, Alon Aranya and Howard Klein are also on board to executive produce.
Kevin Bacon landed the starring role on Kevin Williamson’s untitled drama pilot for FOX. The pilot is a thriller about a devious serial killer who uses technology to create a cult of serial killers and an FBI agent is caught in the fray. Bacon will play the FBI agent. If the pilot is picked up to series, Bacon has committed to 15 episodes per season instead of the normal 22. Williamson will serve as writer and EP on the project; Warner Bros. Television and Outerbanks Entertainment are producing.
Production on a pilot episode called The Dramz was completed by New York-based TAG Studios. The Dramz is a one-hour scripted series about the reality behind reality. The series follows a production company shooting a reality show and the convergence of the two worlds. The show has cast real-life people to play the roles of the reality cast to offer more authenticity to the production. Ralph Farquhar (Married with Children, Moesha) is the showrunner and EP.
Submissions Call: TBS and Rooftop Comedy are partners for the fifth annual TBS Presents Rooftop Comedy National College Comedy Competition (NCCC), a nationwide search for the country’s funniest college students. Students from 32 colleges and universities from around the nation will participate in this stand-up comedy competition, presented by TBS and sponsored for the first time by Wendy’s. The best comedians will get the chance to perform at the TBS Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Chicago this June. Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: FOX won Tuesday with its lineup at 3.2/9 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX’s Glee hit the right note at 8p winning with a 3.7/10 while CBS’ NCIS repeat and NBC’s The Biggest Loser tied for #2 at 2.0/6 each. FOX was #1 during 9p with an average of 2.8/7 for its comedies New Girl and Raising Hope and sharing second place was NBC’s The Biggest Loser tied and Univision’s La Que No Podia Amar at 2.2/6 apiece. CBS ranked first at 10p with a rebroadcast of Unforgettable at 1.4/4 though Univision’s Aqui y Ahora was a tenth of a rating point behind at 1.3/4.

National Geographic Channels International elevated Germaine Deagan Sweet to SVP/Global Content Sales. Germaine will now manage the restructured Global Content Sales team which has expanded its worldwide coverage with team members and local resources in NGC offices located in London, Paris, Madrid, Warsaw, Washington, D.C., Rome, Moscow and Tokyo. Germaine is based in London and will report to James Bond, CFO, National Geographic Channels Worldwide.
Bob Reid, EVP/GM of The Africa Channel is retiring from the network as of March 1. Bob has been with the network for seven years and was part of the original team that launched The African Channel in 2005. Bob headed the network’s programming, production, marketing and affiliate sales as well as strategic planning. Following his departure from the network, Bob will move to Accra, Ghana to establish an independent production company that will offer content to The Africa Channel. He will further manage production operations for the network’s existing Kampala, Uganda bureau and will open the Accra bureau by late March.
Former SVP/Editorial with CNN/US Nancy Lane was appointed Executive Producer of CBSNews.com. Nancy will head all editorial for CBS News’ digital assets, social media and mobile apps. Nancy takes over her new position immediately.
