Creator and longtime host of Soul Train, Don Cornelius, died yesterday morning at the age of 75.  Mr. Cornelius launched Soul Train in Chicago in 1970.  Soul Train and Mr. Cornelius is credited with introducing and showcasing some of the greatest African American artists such as Gladys Knight & The Pips, Al Green, The Commodores, Kool and the Gang, En Vogue and many more.  Soul Train went on to become one of the longest-running syndicated shows in television.   Mr. Cornelius exited Soul Train as host in 1993.

A statement on the passing of Don Cornelius was released by Debra L. Lee, Chairman/CEO of BET Networks: “We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Don Cornelius. He was a pioneer in the television and music industries and his legacy and influence on American culture will continue to live on for many generations to come. He made Soul Train a destination for lovers of Black culture and music and connected the world to our culture and we are forever grateful. We owe so much of our success to him, he built the space for the creation of a BET, built a platform for the music that our audience loves and gave a voice to countless artists that shaped black culture and beyond his impact can’t be measured. He will be missed, but remembered at every wedding, party and family reunion forever with the enduring Soul Train line.”

BET Networks furthermore will air special programming honoring Don Cornelius: tonight BET airs Soul Train Awards 2011 at 8p and also tonight Centric’s 24-hour marathon of Soul Train episodes continue (it began the previous night).  Centric will also air the Soul Train Awards 2011 this Friday at 9p and the Soul Train Awards 2010 will air Saturday at 10p.  This weekend, Centric will air two 12-hour Soul Train Marathons at 10a on Saturday and 9a on Sunday.

Sewee Entertainment now handles the domestic and international distribution for the new half-hour talk/variety series, Jose Feliciano Show.  The series will combine a lively talk format with musical numbers in both Spanish and English.  The show has a scheduled fall 2012 launch with 26 original episodes.

ABC picked up a four-pack of new one-hour pilots: Gotham centers on a female copy that discovers a magical world within New York City.  Michael Green is the EP through 20th Century Fox Television.  The second pilot is Zero Hour from ABC Studios about an editor of a skeptics magazine who is drawn into one of the most compelling conspiracies in human history.  Paul Scheuring is the writer and EP along with Lorenzo DiBonaventura and Dan McDermott.  Pilot number three is from Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry titled Devious Maids and based on a Mexican format.  Devious Maids is a soap about four maids with ambition and dreams of their own as they work for the rich and famous in Beverly Hills. Cherry is the writer and EP through ABC Studios; Sabrina Wind is also an EP.  The fourth project is Penoza based on a Dutch format about the widow of an assassinated criminal who is forced to adopt her husband’s part in a crime syndicate in order to protect her family.  Melissa Rosenberg is the writer/EP via ABC Studios.  Endemol Studios, Alon Aranya and Howard Klein are also on board to executive produce.

Kevin Bacon landed the starring role on Kevin Williamson’s untitled drama pilot for FOX.  The pilot is a thriller about a devious serial killer who uses technology to create a cult of serial killers and an FBI agent is caught in the fray. Bacon will play the FBI agent.  If the pilot is picked up to series, Bacon has committed to 15 episodes per season instead of the normal 22.  Williamson will serve as writer and EP on the project; Warner Bros. Television and Outerbanks Entertainment are producing.

Production on a pilot episode called The Dramz was completed by New York-based TAG Studios.  The Dramz is a one-hour scripted series about the reality behind reality.  The series follows a production company shooting a reality show and the convergence of the two worlds.  The show has cast real-life people to play the roles of the reality cast to offer more authenticity to the production.  Ralph Farquhar (Married with Children, Moesha) is the showrunner and EP.
