~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

The CW handed a 19th edition renewal to reality competition series America’s Next Top Model, per THR.  Hosted by Tyra Banks, the series’ 19th edition will debut this fall as a college version and casting will begin soon.  The 18th edition premieres next Wednesday at 9p on The CW with a “British Invasion” theme.  ANTM is produced by 10 by 10 Entertainment in association with Bankable Productions.

Late-night series Conan will stay put on TBS through April 2014 as the network extended the show’s run with host Conan O’Brien.  Conan is produced by Conaco LLC and airs on TBS Monday-Thursday at 11p. 

A new pop culture, sketch comedy series, Stevie TV debuts on VH1 March 4 at 11p.  The show features host Stevie Ryan who co-writes the comedic sketches and offers a humorous and satirical look at pop culture events, hit reality shows and the goofs and blunders of politicians.  Stevie TV is produced by New Wave Entertainment.

New episodes of Storage Wars: Texas is back on A&E Network beginning March 6 with double episodes at 9p and 930p.  When the series launched in December 2011, a record 4.1 million total viewers and 2.1 million A25-54 viewers tuned in, making it the most-watched original series launch in the network’s history with these two demos.  Storage Wars: Texas is produced by Original Productions, a FremantleMedia Company for A&E.

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network is bringing back its series Oprah’s Lifeclass with six new episodes under the umbrella title: Oprah’s Lifeclass: The Tour beginning March 26 at 8p.  The opening episode takes viewers live to the Peabody Opera House in St. Louis followed by the April 2 episode at Radio City Music Hall in New York.  Two episodes will be taped in each city and a third location will be announced soon.  Harpo Studios produces the series.

Throughout 2012, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) invites several guest programmers to present an entire night of their favorite films with TCM host Robert Osborne.  Those participating in the Guest Programmer series include cartoonist Jules Feiffer, Anthony Bourdain, Debra Winger, Ellen Barkin, Spike Lee, Regis Philbin and Jim Lehrer.  Additional 2012 guest programmers will be announced in the coming months.

Season five of TLC’s The Little Couple premieres March 20 at 10p.  The new season follows Bill Klein and Jen Arnold as they move into their custom-built dream house in Houston and continue to pursue starting a family.  The series is produced by LMNO Productions for TLC.

VH1’s season premiere of Basketball Wives on Monday averaged a 1.7 rating among A18-49 and the 8p opening episode was seen by 2.5 million total viewers.

Yesterday, Canoe Ventures announced it is shuttering its interactive television advertising business and will close its New York office and lay off 120 employees including CEO Kathy Timko.  The company will continue to have 30 employees to operate VOD ads, its only product.  Canoe Ventures was established in 2008 by six US cable operators: Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, Charter Communications, Cablevision Systems and Bright House Networks.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

BBC America reports filming has begun on the new season of Doctor Who in Cardiff, Wales.  Matt Smith reprises his role as The Doctor along with Karen Gillan as Amy and Arthur Darvill as Rory.  Doctor Who is a BBC Cymru Wales Production for BBC ONE.

Logo revealed a new development slate. Approved series in production include:

  • Eden Wood’s World (wt) Series showcases six-year-old retired pageant contestant, Eden Wood and her desire to become an actress/singer/model/entertainment superstar.  From Go Go Luckey Entertainment.
  • The Baby Wait (wt) This series documents the process of open adoption and follows the adoptive parent’s stories.  The series will showcase all types of new parents from straight couples, gay couples and single parents.  Executive produced by DiGa’s Tony DiSanto and Liz Gateley, the pair behind MTV’s Teen Mom, 16 and Pregnant and Made.

Other Logo series projects in development:

  • Wiseguys – Series features Michel Verdi, her husband Jay and her family including her Mafioso, ex-con father.  The Los Angeles-based family all lives together and work in a new family-run business. Executive producers include Jenny Daly (T Group) and Rob Lobl.
  • Design My Dog – Studio-based reality competition show where four dog owners are challenged each week as they work with a fashion designer to create the latest looks in canine couture.  The winner receives a cash prize and a dog calendar contract.  Produced by 10×10 Productions.
  • Love Lockdown (wt) Couples will enter a hard-core 24-hour therapy session at a critical point in their relationship and either agree to follow the therapist’s advice or walk out.  From Ellen Rakieten Productions and RelativityREAL.
  • Outrageous – This series showcases topics in pop culture that are deemed outrageous.
  • Logo also said it is renewing RuPaul’s Drag U for a third season from World of Wonder.

Lou Piniella, the New York Yankees former player, manager and general manager will be part of the YES Network as a special contributor.  Piniella will provide Yankees game and studio analysis for the network as well as be involved in Spring Training coverage, possible post-season coverage and a contributor to YES special event programming.  He will also contribute to YESNetwork.com. 

Former Dollhouse star Dichen Lachman has joined ABC’s undersea drama pilot Last Resort produced by Shawn Ryan.  Lachman will play Tani, an intelligent though naive bar owner on the island and she is also the daughter of an elder tribesman. 

Drama pilot Americana for ABC added Ken Olin, reports THR.  Olin will play Martin, the owner of a garment manufacturing company whose daughter designs clothes for the company.  Olin joins previously cast Anthony LaPaglia and Natalie Mendoza.  ABC Studios is producing. 

NBC tapped former Lost star Titus Welliver in its drama pilot Midnight Sun.  Welliver will play the charismatic and manipulative leader of the group known as Midnight Sun, a cult-like commune in Alaska. 

NBC’s comedy pilot The New Normal from Ryan Murphy and Ali Adler added Justin Bartha as co-star. 

Ryan Phillippe will now not star in the untitled cop drama for CBS from Greg Berlanti and Nicholas Wootton.  Phillippe is currently filming a major run on FX’s fifth and final season of Damages and reportedly has parted amicably with the project.

Monday A18-49 Analysis:  NBC hit the right note among A18-49 viewers Monday by delivering a 4.7/12, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  NBC’s The Voice was #1 at 8p with a 5.5/14 and CBS’ comedies How I Met Your Mother and 2 Broke Girls came next at an average of 3.9/10.  NBC saw a bump in the ratings for the second hour of The Voice during 9p to a 6.5/15 and more CBS sitcoms, Two and a Half Men and Mike & Molly placed second at an average of 3.8/9.  CBS nabbed the final win of the night with Hawaii Five-O posting a 2.9/7 at 10p followed by NBC’s Smash at 2.3/6 and ABC’s Castle at 2.1/5.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS notched a win Sunday with A18-49 viewers at 2.2/6, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  At 7p, ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Videos won at 2.0/6 followed by CBS’ 60 Minutes at 1.8/5.  ABC held court during 8p with Once Upon a Time at 3.1/8 while the season premiere of The Amazing Race on CBS was #2 at 2.8/7.  At 9p, a tie occurred for #1 between FOX and its comedies Family Guy and American Dad at an average of 2.5/6 and the opening hour of NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice debut also delivered a 2.5/6; in third place this hour was ABC’s Desperate Housewives at 2.2/5.  Then at 10p, NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice gained the solo top spot at 2.8/7 and CBS’ CSI: Miami was second at 2.2/6.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Effective immediately, Margaret O’Brien was promoted to the newly-created role as President of Entertainment One Television (eOne) in Canada.  In her new role, Margaret will oversee all facets of the television group in Canada.  Margaret’s new capacity will also see her build and broaden relationships with Canadian producers and broadcasters in the factual arena among other duties.  Prior to this appointment, Margaret served eOne as COO.

Dina Muradian advances to Senior Director/Bravo Program Planning at Bravo.  Dina joined Bravo in August 2010. 

CBS Entertainment elevated Angelica McDaniel to SVP/Daytime where she will supervise the network’s daytime lineup including the soaps The Young and the Restless and Bold and the Beautiful, game shows The Price Is Right and Let’s Make A Deal and the talk show The Talk.  Previously, Angelica was added at CBS in August 2010 as VP/Current Daytime Programs to oversee The Talk.  She reports to Nina Tassler, President, CBS Entertainment.  

NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and Cable Studios upped longtime NBCUniversal executive Rafael Gomez to VP/Business Affairs.  Furthermore, Lori Lynem joined the department as VP/Business Affairs along with Tehmina Jaffer as Director/Business Affairs.  All three report to Philip Matthys, SVP/Business Affairs, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and Cable Studios.

Eric Wong returns to Island Def Jam Music Group as EVP/Marketing.  Based in New York, Eric will report to Steve Bartels, President/COO.
