Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 1, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

One person’s garbage is another person’s treasure…
Later this morning in Washington DC, the US Department of Health and Human Services, the Ad Council and DreamWorks Animation will kick-off a joint kid and family targeted obesity prevention public service effort featuring characters from Shrek, star of the upcoming movie Shrek The Third.  Shrek as an anti-obesity icon? Seems a little odd, doesn’t it?  Wasn’t there a to-do about Shrek Cereal a few years back? Healthy lifestyle?  Sure, Shrek is an ogre, a species loosely defined as evil, monster-like, slovenly and generally unpleasant who eat fairy tale characters; and in Shrek’s case a green and overweight one.  Let’s take a quick look at the eating habits of the other characters from the movie: Fiona, an ogress; Donkey, a stubborn animal that often get a bad rap for eating everything (though their diet is actually similar to horses … yeah, I checked); Puss in Boots, basically cats are stereotyped as finicky eaters (think Morris); then there is the fairy princess troika Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella – between the three of them I can only remember one eating, and it was a tainted apple, which didn’t turn out well at all.  Seemingly interesting choices, to adults anyhow, as we are encumbered by stereotypes, irony and the inability to easily allow for change.  That said, think about the Shrek movies and the characters pretty much break a lot of the stereotypes or perhaps transcend them (awwwe), which is to say that for kids the choice of Shrek and company just isn’t so incongruous.  As for other upcoming Shrek movie promotions, yes there is a deal with McDonalds, perhaps pushing their newest healthy offerings, as well as return partner in M&M Mars (Shrek-2 movie brought Ogre-sized M&Ms).  The new PSA campaign is an extension of the HHS and Ad Council’s ongoing Small Steps Obesity Prevention initiative that is designed to encourage kids/families to lead healthy lifestyles.  DreamWorks will release Shrek The Third on May 18, 2007.

Turner Broadcasting and its division Cartoon Network caused quite a stir in Boston yesterday when a series of electronic devices that lit up and featured battery attachments were discovered on buildings, bus stations and other public places and police and bomb squads were called in, bringing traffic and business to a halt in Boston and other cities.  The devices were not in fact bombs, but rather part of a gorilla marketing campaign for the animated series Aqua Teen Hunger Force, which is part of Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block.  Interference Inc., the marketing company that deployed folks to put the devices up, has been ordered to remove all of the devices it placed, which is estimated to be two or so dozen.  Turner has apologized to the city of Boston.  The campaign, including the makeshift devices were placed in nine other US cities without similar fury.  You may remember the billboards that popped up around the country last June, they were red and featured phrases like “I Pooted” and had some folks pretty confused and guessing and/or searching for their “hidden” meaning, while prompting others to pull off the road to take photos of them?  In case you have forgotten, they were part of a Cartoon Network marketing campaign do support the debut of its then new primetime lineup.

Canada’s Rainmaker Entertainment has established Rainmaker Animation, a new division that will incorporate Mainframe Entertainment, which the company acquired last year.  In announcing the Rainmaker Animation, the company also named Paul Gertz to serve as the division’s EVP. Movies currently in production at Rainmaker Animation include, The Nutty Professor 2, Zixx and several projects for Mattel.  Rainmaker’s other two divisions include Rainmaker Visual Effects and Rainmaker Post. 

Showtime Networks and Broadband Libraries have teamed-up to form On Broadband Networks, a 3D broadband game service for cable modem and DSL high-speed access providers.  Slated to launch in 2Q 2007, the joint service will feature a collection of interactive software and games, some game titles will be free and other available via a game store with 500 titles, subscriptions supporting both online and offline gameplay.  Also available will be game-related content such as reviews, cheats sheets and tips & tricks.  Each month, On Broadband Networks will feature six full games for free that can be downloaded with unlimited play for that month.  After that users can purchase the game from the store.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Buena Vista international Television-Asia Pacific has completed a deal with Vietnamese distributor Q.net co., to broadcast a group of Disney animated TV series on broadcaster HTV, according to Variety.  A branded programming 30-minute programming block, Toon Disney, bows this month on HTV7 and will run seven days a week from 6-6:30a.  Disney series to be featured under the new pact include Mickey Mouseworks, Adventures of Mickey & Donald, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command and Timon & Pumbaa.  Disney’s Jetix animation programming block debuted on Vietnam Television in fall 2005. In spring 2006 Buena Vista International inked a deal with megastar Joint venture Company Ltd, to distribute Pixar/Disney and Touchstone movies in Vietnam.  Additionally, as part of its expansion into the region Disney has inked a licensing agreement with Eastern Media Holdings to sell toys, consumer products and apparel in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

The N will celebrate Valentine’s Day with Love ‘Em and Leave ‘Em Weekend, a three-day event showcasing the best dates, disses and disasters from the network’s series including Degrassi, Instant Star, One on One and Beyond The Break, Friday, February 9 through Sunday, February 11, 2007.  The three-day love-in will be hosted by members of the band Fall Out Boy and cast members of The N’s series Beyond the Break, and will also include band interviews and a performance of their single This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race, from the upcoming album Infinity On High, which releases February 6. 

In other new from The N, beginning February 9, viewers can see a sneak peek on-air and online of the third season of Instant Star, which premieres Friday, February 16.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Madame Alexander, the 84-year-old doll company, has partnered with Touchstone Television and ABC Entertainment to create and launch a line of Desperate Housewives dolls.  The ladies of Wisteria Lane will be featured in outfits inspired by the ones they wear on the series. The Desperate Housewives dolls are 16″ and have hard plastic bodies and vinyl heads, and are only available for sale in North America.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Paul Gertz has been tapped as EVP, Rainmaker Animation, the new unit of Rainmaker Entertainment.  Over the last quarter century, Gertz has toiled in executive and creative positions a Lucasfilm, Hanna-Barbera, Turner Feature Animation and Global Digital Creations.  Additionally, Gertz served as Executive Producer of animated feature Titan, A.E. and as Producer of Cat’s Don’t Dance and The Pagemaster.  Brian Moylan will serve as Managing Director, Rainmaker Visual Effects.  Barry Chambers continues as President, Rainmaker Post.
