Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 16, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

MLB on FOX unveiled this season’s broadcast plans which include 24 weeks of regular season coverage, with the Red Sox, Cubs, Yankees and Giants all slated to hit the maximum of nine appearances on the network this season. The Rangers, Angels, Braves, and Mets are locked in for eight. The FOX Saturday Baseball Game of the Week this year will include eight consecutive primetime broadcasts, the most ever scheduled during the regular-season. Primetime coverage begins at 7p on May 19 with five Interleague matchups that include Red Sox/Phillies and WhiteSox/Cubs. MLB on FOX’s Opening Day schedule begins at 3:30p on Saturday, April 7with the Cardinals/Brewers and Giants/Diamondbacks among the games on deck.

On the Air

After a five-year stint at Monday Night Football, Ron Jaworski is leaving the broadcast booth at ESPN, with Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden now manning a two-person team behind the microphone. Jaworski signed a five-year extension to remain with ESPN, however, where he will now serve in a “new, expanded multiplatform NFL analyst role” that includes appearances on a number of shows. The Tirico-Gruden pairing marks just the sixth time in MNF’s 42-year history that the broadcast will be anchored by a two-person commentator team.

ESPN also inked a deal to bring back three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion crew chief Ray Evernham, where he will join ESPN’s team at Daytona Speedweeks and will be part of NASCAR Countdown. He also will appear on NASCAR Now and SportsCenter. Evernham previously left ESPN for another position after the 2010 season.

Wunderkind Jeremy Lin isn’t just driving the Knicks to victories; Tuesday night’s game-winning shot by Lin also helped propel MSG Network to the channel’s highest rating since Carmelo Anthony’s debut last year. The game finished at a 4.66 household rating and peaked with quarter-hour score of 7.84, according to Nielsen.

NFL Network and NFL.com announced plans for this year’s 2012 NFL Scouting Combine with more than 50 hours of programming slated for the event. Over the course of six days, NFL Network broadcasts live from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, with a look at more than 300 NFL prospects looking to make an impression. NFL Network’s coverage starts Thursday, Feb 23 at 2:30p with Around the League: 2012 NFL Scouting Combine Press Conferences from Lucas Oil Stadium. Live coverage of workouts begins on Saturday, February 25 at 9:00a with the offensive linemen,tight ends and kickers. For the first time ever, NFL.com will offer unofficial 40-yard dash times for each participant in real time with the Combine Tracker, and list how each athlete performed in each of the drills.

Golf Channel’s final round coverage of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on Sunday scored as the most-watched PGA TOUR round in the 17-year history of the network, beating the previously held mark by 25%. Coverage drew a 2.1 household rating and 2,337,000 average viewers, to best the same coverage in 2011 by a whopping 198% and made Sunday the highest-rated day on Golf Channel year to date.

NASCAR ON FOX drops the green flag on the network’s 12th season on Saturday with the 34th Annual Budweiser Shootout in primetime at 8p. Host Chris Myers and analyst Darrell Waltrip will offer prerace coverage, and once the race begins, Mike Joy joins Waltrip and Larry McReynolds to call all the action. Meanwhile, SPEED opens its Daytona Speedweeks programming lineup tonight at 6p with a special live two-hour edition of NASCAR Race Hub and 100 hours of coverage locked in altogether.

ESPN2 will play host to six Major League Lacrosse games this season with 42 regular-season games destined for ESPN3 as the 12th season of MLL action is scheduled to launch on Saturday, April 28, with a tripleheader. The season opens with a tripleheader on ESPN3 at 7p featuring Rochester at Boston, Denver at Charlotte and Chesapeake at Long Island. Joe Beninati and Quint Kessenich will once again serve as the commentator team for the MLL telecasts on ESPN2.

The BBC announced its 3D plans for the 2012 Olympic Games, which will include the opening and closing ceremonies and nightly highlights. The only competition that will be shown in the format will be the men’s 100 meter finals on Aug. 5.

WWE’s WrestleMania is coming to MetLife Stadium in 2013, according to the AP, with Gov. Chris Christie set to hold a news conference today at the stadium.

ECU Chancellor Dr.Steve Ballard was interviewed on WGHB and offered some more insight to the recently-announced merger between the Mountain West Conference and Conference USA. In the interview, he said that representatives from the new league are meeting with three networks, and the goal will be to grow to four groups of 6-8 regional divisions. May 1st is the target date to have plans laid out.

MLS team the Columbus Crew announced a long-term partnership with Perio, Inc. that will place the Barbasol brand on the front of the team’s jerseys. The deal will begin with this season and run for five years. The partnership also designates Barbasol as the “Official Shaving Cream of the Columbus Crew” and includes field-level LED signage and TV, radio and print advertising, among other assets.

The NBA has named Denise Bennett as Senior Manager, Global Marketing Partnerships for the league. She previously served as Manager, Integrated Media-Women at NBCU.

Churchill Downs Racetrack has three new partners for the upcoming Kentucky Derby, locking in deals with Moet & Chandon Champagne, who will introduce the all new Moet & Chandon Toast to the Kentucky Derby during the festivities, BLUE04 water, and SandRidge Energy.

Verizonand BTN are now offering BTN2Go to its FiOS TV subscribers. The platform offers a live feed of all BTN television programming, including live game telecasts and Extra Football Game Channels as well as access to BTN’s video archive. Verizon FiOS TV subscribers can access BTN2Go on three platforms: the internet, iPad and iPhone.

CIO reports that the NBA and NHL have both stopped making official BlackBerry sports applications for the current season, and MLB could be next.

Bleacher Report is launching several sports shows on YouTube, beginning with B/R5, profiling the five biggest, best or most buzzworthy sports stories of the day, and hosted by Desi Sanchez. Later this week, the site will launch NFL Draft 365 and Why We Watch, with Alex Panos as host. Next month, Full Ride will debut as a weekly show serving information, opinion and analysis about the college football recruiting scene.

Ustream is partnering with Universal Sports Network for live coverage of the 2012 Alpine Ski World Cup. The alliance will include additional sports including coverage of the HSBC Sevens World Series rugby matches with the next match set for March 23-25 in So Kon Po, Hong Kong. In addition, Ustream viewers will get access to some of Universal Sports Network’s other events including the Swimming Grand Prix, CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying soccer tournament, World Figure Skating Championships, Giro d’Italia, Vuelta a Espana, and VISA National Championships (gymnastics), among many others.
