Latin American-based talent search series Q’Viva! The Chosen from Jennifer Lopez was picked up by FOX. The series recently premiered on Univision and FOX will debut an English-language version beginning March 3. The series stars Lopez, singer Marc Anthony and concert director Jamie King and the three stars travel to 20 countries to find and showcase the best Latin singers, dancers, musicians and other performers. The best contestants are then invited to the US for a climatic show. FOX will air Q’Viva! The Chosen in two-hour episodes until its finale on April 7. Even though Lopez and the others often speak English on the show, some parts will be presented in Spanish or Portuguese with English subtitles. The series is a co-production of EP Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment and Lopez’s NuYoRican, Anthony and King.
This March, Discovery Channel premieres a new competition series, Machines of Glory. In each episode, three crews of machine operators go head-to-head to see which one is the best on the construction job site. Johnny Littlefield hosts the series produced by Hallock Healey Entertainment for Discovery Channel.
Discovery Channel also renewed Gold Rush for a third season, reports THR. Season two of Gold Rush concludes February 24.
TBS wants more of the sitcom Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse, ordering 35 additional episodes. The series is from writer/director/EP Tyler Perry and the ensemble cast includes Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Crystle Stewart, Kent Faulcon and Jason Olive. The comedy will be back on TBS’ Friday night schedule this summer. During its first season, Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse averaged 2.9 million total viewers and 1.6 million A18-49, making it basic cable’s #1 sitcom of 2011. The series is produced by Tyler Perry Studios and is distributed by Debmar-Mercury.
An eighth season of Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations is back on Travel Channel starting April 9 at 9p. Bourdain will trek to fifteen locations worldwide in the one-hour series experiencing food and culture in such locales as Penang, Japan, Lisbon and Kansas City among others. The series is produced for Travel Channel by Zero Point Zero.
Early next month, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) is kicking off its third annual Road to Hollywood tour of free events starting with the world theatrical premiere of the newly-restored classic film To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). The film is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and will be screened at The Ziegfeld Theatre in NYC March 1 at 730p and introduced by TCM host Robert Osborne with special guest Spike Lee. Tickets were made available starting yesterday. TCM’s Road to Hollywood tour includes nine other stops across the nation to screen classic films hosted by Osborne or TCM weekend daytime host, Ben Mankiewicz as well as film critic/historian Leonard Maltin. Movie stars making appearances during the tour include Jane Powell, Tippi Hedren, Shirley Jones, Eva Marie Saint and Ernest Borgnine. TCM’s Road to Hollywood tour serves as a precursor to the network’s 2012 TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood, April 12-15. HISTORY had back-to-back premieres on Tuesday starting with Top Gear at 9p attracting 2.1 million total viewers and 1.1 million with both A18-49 and A25-54 viewers. At 10p, the fourth season of Top Shot bowed to 1.8 million total viewers, 1.0 million with A18-49 and 1.1 million among A25-54. Top Gear is produced by BBC Worldwide Productions and is a co-production between HISTORY and BBC Worldwide; Top Shot is produced for HISTORY by Pilgrim Studios.

Me-TV made recent affiliation deals with two stations owned by Raycom Media. WTOL/Toledo and WWBT/Richmond are joining three other Raycom-owned affiliates including WOIO/Cleveland, KOLD/Tucson and WQWQ/Paducah. Following the addition of these two stations, Me-TV’s affiliate roster now totals more than 115 and its clearance stands at more than 77% of the US.
A new reality dating series was ordered by CBS for this coming summer. The new series is titled “3” and follows three single women of different ages, life experiences and backgrounds as they meet for the first time and share the same goal to find true love. As the trio searches for love partners, the women will be together and emotionally support each other through the dating and decision-making process. The series is based on an original format by Keshet Broadcasting Ltd. and based on an original series produced by Kastina Productions that premiered last summer in Israel and captured top ratings. Jane Lipsitz, Dan Cutforth, Chris Columbus, Avi Nir and Ami Glam all serve as EPs.
NBC handed Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal a 13-episode straight to series order. The series is a modern-day take on characters from Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon, beginning with FBI agent Will Graham’s relationship with mentor Dr. Hannibal Lecter. NBC further gave a pilot order to Notorious, a soap centered on a female detective who goes undercover in the wealthy family she grew up with, posing as their maid’s daughter. The detective is attempting to solve the murder of a notorious heiress who was once her close friend. Liz Heldens is writing the Notorious pilot with Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein on board as EPs.
Travel Channel approved two new original unscripted series and has two other series in development for 2012. The approved series include: Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America (wt) with eleven episodes (ten half-hours with a one-hour finale). The weekly series is produced by Sharp Entertainment for Travel Channel. The second approved series is Toy Hunters, a weekly half-hour series following toy and collectible dealer Jordan Hembrough also from Sharp Entertainment.
Travel Channel’s series in development include:
- Mile High (wt), a weekly half-hour featuring David Arquette and his buddy Mike McGuiness, owner of the public relations firm McGuiness and Feinstein. The series will follow the pair as they add in spontaneous adventures into their weekend travel abroad between work commitments. The series is produced by Coquette Productions, Inc. for Travel Channel.
- Aloha Gold (wt) is a half-hour pilot set in Hawaii and centers on Discover Hawaii Tours, a large independent tour operator. Fishbowl Worldwide Media is producing.
A talk show starring Jenny McCarthy is being developed for VH1 and is set to premiere in late summer or fall. EP Michael Davies is involved with The Jenny McCarthy Show and full details of the talk show are being kept under wraps for now though it will highlight McCarthy’s perspective on pop culture with guest panelists and celebrity interviews.
Undercover Boss EPs Stephen Lambert and Eli Holzman at Studio Lambert were handed an order from A&E Network for Be the Boss, per THR. The series will follow contestants competing to run their own franchise. A&E ordered seven one-hour episodes and the series was based on a 2010 episode that featured 7-Eleven CEO Joe DePino giving a Texas truck driver management of his own store. No premiere date has been set.
The two-hour 43rdNAACP Image Awards, airing live on NBC this Friday at 8p will be hosted by Sanaa Lathan and Anthony Mackie.
Zach McGowan was promoted to series regular for season three of Showtime’s Shameless. McGowan plays Jody, the recovering sex addict who has come between Karen (Laura Wiggins) and Lip’s (Jeremy Allen White) relationship.
Paget Brewster used Twitter to announce to fans she is departing CBS’ Criminal Minds where she has portrayed Emily Prentiss for the last seven seasons. Brewster told fans that it was a “hard choice” to leave though she thinks it is “time for something new.”
In other CBS news, Toni Trucks landed a role on the network’s legal drama pilot Baby Big Shot about a working class woman named Marina who uses her street savvy ways to compete with her sophisticated colleagues at a top New York law firm. Trucks will play Cindi, Marina’s edgy secretary. Sony Pictures Television, CBS Television Studios and Fanfare are producing.
The CW has two casting announcements: Katie Cassidy landed the role of Dinah Laurel on Arrow, the network’s DC Comics-inspired pilot. Stefania Owen was cast as Carrie Bradshaw’s 14-year old sister Dorrit on The Carrie Diaries pilot.
Teen actress Daniela Bobadilla landed the role of Charlie Sheen’s daughter on FX’s upcoming series Anger Management. FX has ordered 10 episodes though the premiere date has not been set yet.
TV personality and host popular throughout Mexico, Marco Antonio Regil has founded RGL Entertainment on the West Coast to produce original English and Spanish language content for US television. RGL Entertainment will additionally produce TV series and specials for major broadcasters in Mexico as well as create national advertising campaigns showcasing Regil. The new business also includes Regil’s long-time business partner David Steinberg and US TV producer/director Ron Lyon. Steinberg will be involved with programming and sponsorship efforts for Latin America while Lyon will concentrate on RGL’s original production and advertising operations targeting the US and international markets as well as Regil’s US-based hosting opportunities.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: CBS had the winning lineup Tuesday delivering a 3.1/9 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, CBS’ NCIS won with a 3.9/11 followed by FOX’s Glee at 2.8/8. Also this hour, ABC debuted a new season of Cougar Town at 830p which posted a 1.8/5 in the demo. CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles was tops at 9p with a 3.2/8 and FOX played second fiddle again, this time with comedies New Girl and Raising Hope at an average of 2.6/7. CBS finished a clean sweep during 10p as Unforgettable was #1 at 2.3/6 and Univision’s La Que No Podia Amar moved into second place at 1.7/5.
