Captain Phil Harris, 53, star of the Discovery Channel series Deadliest Catch died on Tuesday, following a stroke he suffered in January. Phil appeared on the popular reality series for five seasons, as the series captured him and his crew during dangerous fishing expeditions off the Alaskan coast. The Discovery Channel released this statement following the announcement of Phil’s death: “Discovery mourns the loss of dear friend and colleague Captain Phil Harris. He was more than someone on our television screen. Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him. We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart. We share our tremendous sadness over this loss with the millions of viewers who followed Phil’s every move. We send our thoughts and prayers to Phil’s sons Josh and Jake and the Cornelia Marie crew.”

Bravo serves up a second season of Top Chef Masters beginning April 7 at 11p with the series moving to its regular time slot as of April 14 at 10p. In the new season, 22 well-known chefs battle each other in weekly challenges, until all but one are eliminated, with the final contestant earning the title “Top Chef Master” and a $100,000 for their chosen charity. Guest stars and judges making appearances this new season include Mekhi Phifer, The Simpsons creator Matt Groening and star Hank Azaria, Travel Channel’s Andrew Zimmern, the cast of ABC’s Modern Family, US Olympic swimmer Jason Lezak among others. Food journalist Kelly Choi is back as host of Top Chef Masters along with the trio presiding at the Critic’s Table: restaurant critic Gael Greene, culinary expert James Oseland and food critic Jay Rayner. Top Chef’s series judge, Gail Simmons will also be a judge this season on Top Chef Masters. Magical Elves produces Top Chef Masters with Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz as executive producers.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution has renewed Telepictures Productions’ The Ellen DeGeneres Show for three additional seasons on the ten NBC O&O stations through the end of the 2013-2014 season, by which time Ellen will be in her 11th season.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Several notable casting updates for upcoming pilots, per THR:

  • Andrea Anders (ABC’s Better Off Ted) joins ABC’s comedy pilot Mr. Sunshine, starring opposite Matthew Perry. From Sony TV, Mr. Sunshine centers on Ben (Perry), the manager of an aging San Diego sports stadium, who realizes on his 40th birthday he cannot simply rely on his charm to get by. Anders will portray Alice, who is in a close “friends with benefits” relationship with Ben. This casting spot for Anders is secondary to her role on sophomore sitcom Better Off Ted which may not be renewed by ABC. Nate Torrence was also tapped for Mr. Sunshine, to play the awkward son of Ben’s boss played by Allison Janney.
  • Furthermore, Jesse Metcalfe landed a co-starring role on NBC’s drama pilot Chase from Warner Bros. Television and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Metcalfe will play a put-together Marshal from Washington, D.C. newly assigned to the team.
  • Matt L. Jones will star in a leading role opposite Gary Cole on TBS’ 60m pilot Uncle Nigel.
  • Eamonn Walker was added to the ABC drama pilot The Whole Truth.

Frank Grillo (Prison Break) was selected to lead ABC’s new paranormal crime drama series The Gates, reports THR. Produced by Fox Television Studios, The Gates is about a big city cop (Grillo) who is hired as police chief of a seemingly pleasant planned community, only to discover there is more to the resident’s than he thought. Also cast is Luke Mably as one of the residents, a cardiologist who is vampirelike; Janina Gavankar as a local cop with a dark secret; and Chandra West as the owner of a tea shop. ABC is likely to premiere The Gates this summer.

TBS okayed two additional 60m comedy pilots, giving both cast contingent orders:

  • In Security – Written and executive produced by Ric Swartzlander and Pete Segal; Chris Albrecht is also executive producing. The plot is about two sisters who head a private security team assigned to protect the elite, while juggling their own personal and family concerns.
  • Franklin & Bash – Sony Television is producing this comedy centered on Jared Franklin and Steven Bash, two street lawyers and long-time friends, who after beating a high-class law firm in a high-profile case, are recruited by the firm’s patriarch. Kevin Falls and Bill Chais are writing and also executive producing with Sony-based Jamie Tarses.
