~ MORE STUFF ~

Nielsen offers statistics on the most-viewed commercials from last Sunday’s Super Bowl XLV:

  • Chevrolet’s spot featuring two guys describing a woman’s wild ride in a silver Camaro has become the most-watched commercial ever with an estimated 119.6 million total viewers.  This Chevy spot tops the previous commercial record holder, a Doritos ad from 2010 with 116.2 million viewers.
  • This year’s Doritos ad spotlighting a pug dog knocking down the door is the most recalled ad of the game.
  • Mini “Darth Vader” starting the Volkswagen Passat ranks as the most favorite commercial of the game.

PBS premieres Hitman Returns: David Foster & Friends as part of THIRTEEN’s Great Performances series this March (check local listings).  The concert was filmed last October at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas and is a follow-up to the 2008 Hitman: David Foster & Friends concert.  The new event features talent such as Donna Summer, Seal, Natalie Cole, Jackie Evancho, Ne-Yo, Earth, Wind & Fire, Charice, Michael Bolton, Kenny Loggins, Martina McBride and Chaka Khan among others.  In New York, THIRTEEN will air the special Great Performances event on March 9 at 8p.  Great Performances is produced by THIRTEEN for WNET.

CBS apparently invited Katie Couric to remain as anchor of the CBS Evening News after her current contract expires at the end of May, according to The Daily Beast.  Negotiations have not started though this is the first real signal CBS would like to extend Couric’s deal to stay on as anchor.  If Couric and CBS do reach a new agreement it will likely be for a shorter time period, perhaps through the 2012 elections, and salary-wise be lower than her current annual level of $15 million.  The news of Couric’s possible upcoming deal with CBS comes following the promotion of Jeff Fager, the executive producer of 60 Minutes, who will soon head CBS News after Sean McManus was elevated to Chairman/CBS Sports.

Tuesday’s series bow of Only In America with Larry the Cable Guy on HISTORY at 9p tallied 4.1 million total viewers, 1.7 million among A25-54 and 1.5 million A18-49 viewers.  Also this night, HISTORY debuted the second season of Top Shot at 10p drawing in 2.8 million total viewers and 1.4 million with both A25-54 and A18-49.

Howard Lucraft died February 4 at the age of 94.  Mr. Lucraft was a composer/journalist and a member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.  Mr. Lucraft was educated in England and after immigrating to the US he was a composer and arranger for records, television and radio including commercials and promos working on behalf of Stan Kenton, Anita O’Day, Ray Noble, KTTV-TV and KABC-TV.  He hosted radio programs broadcast over many US radio stations and his “Jazz International” show for American Forces Radio tallied more than 100 million listeners.  Mr. Lucraft also served as the music editor for Daily Variety and he also wrote for Atlantic Records, Los Angeles Times, London Sun, Jazz Times and many other publications.  Mr. Lucraft was also elected president of the Hollywood Press Club three times.  He is survived by his wife, Patricia Masako Ogata.

Upfront 2011

Yesterday, Current TV offered up their 2011 programming plans during a presentation at the Paley Center in New York.  Current TV revealed three new original series:

  • 50 Greatest Documentaries  Series showcases a countdown of the 50 greatest documentaries from the last 30 years.  Five one-hour episodes will premiere during third quarter 2011.
  • Headlines That Shocked America  Series examines some of the most extraordinary news events over the last twenty years.  Five one-hour episodes launch during third quarter 2011.
  • Smoke Jumpers  Series filmed in the Northern Rockies region follows the Missoula “Smoke Jumpers” an elite Special Forces team called in to fight forest fires.  Series is produced by @radical.media and Olive Eye Films.  Six one-hour episodes will premiere in fourth quarter 2011.

Current TV also related premiere dates for two previously-announced new original series and the return/continuation of two others:

  • Bar Karma, the world’s first community-developed TV series, debuts this Friday at 10p with 12 half-hour episodes.
  • Docu-series 4th and Forever opens April 3 at 10p with 9 half-hour episodes.
  • Vanguard airs on Sundays at 10p and the new season will launch this May.
  • Infomania, the half-hour weekly comedy series airs on Thursdays at 11p.
  • Additionally, This American Life, which recently had its basic cable premiere on the network, airs on Mondays at 10p.
~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Comedy Central ordered a new eight-episode series, Sports Show with Norm Macdonald.  Production will begin this month and is slated to premiere in April.  Macdonald, formerly of NBC’s Saturday Night Live will offer his comedic perspective on current stories from the world of sports.  The show will be taped in front of a live audience covering all types of sports similar in fashion to how Macdonald delivered SNL’s Weekend Update as anchor.

Producer Nigel Lythgoe is teaming with his son Simon Lythgoe and Bob Kusbit to helm a new music competition series for CMT debuting in April.  CMT gave the series, CMT’s Next Superstar a 10-episode order.  The competition series will search for the next country music superstar though be different from FOX’s American Idol which Lythgoe also executive produces.  CMT’s new show will not involve on-air auditions and will begin with 10 finalists who do most of their challenges related to country music or the industry outside a studio.  In addition to being judged on performance, the contestants will be scrutinized on their songwriting skills and performances in remote locales, radio interviews and music videos.  The live audience will be involved in every episode except the finale, by voting on the performers and the judges will choose between the two lowest-ranking.  The winner will be revealed at the CMT Awards in June.  Judges for the show will be named at a later date.  CMT’s Next Superstar is produced by Lythgoe’s Legacy Productions based in L.A. and by Big Red 2 Entertainment, co-founded by Lythgoe with 19 Entertainment.  Simon Lythgoe also serves as a co-executive producer for CMT’s Can You Duet and Celebrity Family Feud.

Audra McDonald is exiting ABC’s Private Practice at the conclusion of season four so she can be near her family in New York.  Over the last four years, the actress has commuted between New York and Los Angeles to be part of the series.  In the future, she may appear as a guest star on the ABC series.
