~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Yesterday at a Media Institute luncheon, FCC Media Bureau Chief Bill Lake outlined the FCC’s plans to issue a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking pertaining to retransmission-consent negotiations. The proposal’s goal is “to advance the statutory objectives of allowing retrans fees to be set by market forces while protecting the interests of consumers” in addition to defining more distinctly what makes up good faith bargaining. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski last month approved a congressional review of retransmission-consent rules saying the alterations could include mandatory mediation and binding arbitration. Of late, the FCC has been pressured by Capitol Hill to become more involved in retransmission negotiations following the recent high-profile disagreements between FOX and Time Warner Cable and FOX and Cablevision. Time Warner and other companies have encouraged rulemaking to change the retrans process including the involvement of arbitration for impasses to keep TV station signals on while companies negotiate their deals and to spell out more succinctly what constitutes good faith bargaining.

Later this month, TLC is launching a new 12-episode docu-series, My Strange Addiction, chronicling people who struggle with bizarre addictions. The one-hour series will start December 29 at 9p with the first two episodes airing back-to-back. TLC commissioned the series from 20 West Productions.

Discovery Channel is set to premiere a new series focused on kidnapping and the rescuers involved who find innocent victims as Kidnap & Rescue opens January 29. Over 10 episodes, the series offers first-hand accounts and dramatic recreations of the kidnapping, the rescue planning and the recovery of the victim, profiling specialized victim rescue firms such as HALO and Project Child Save.

FUEL TV is adding two new series to its lineup this month:

  • Bondi Rescue – Series follows a real-life team of Australian lifeguards at one of the busiest and dangerous beaches in the world. FUEL TV has the exclusive rights to all six seasons of the series which makes its US premiere on December 13 at 11p. Produced by Cordell Jigsaw, the series will air weeknights at 11p.
  • SLAM! – FUEL TV’s original series is hosted by professional daredevil and crash expert Chris “Slam” Lambert as he delivers a multitude of crashes and wrecks covering all sports such as surfing, skateboarding, motocross and more. The 13-week series will debut December 15 at 1030p.

Syfy will debut the third season of Merlin beginning January 7 at 10p following WWE Friday Night SmackDown. Syfy will air the series over 13 weeks. FremantleMedia Enterprises handles the exclusive distribution, home entertainment and licensing rights to The Adventures of Merlin. Season two, which finished its run on Syfy last June, averaged 1.72 million total viewers.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Syfy approved the new original scripted series Alphas (wt) from writers Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand, The Avengers) and Michael Karnow. Syfy ordered 11 episodes and a 90m pilot episode directed by Jack Bender, formerly the director/executive producer of Lost. Universal Cable Productions and BermanBraun Television are producing with Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein executive producing for BermanBraun as well as Zak Penn. Production will begin early next year in Toronto with an expected summer 2011 launch. Alphas centers on a group of ordinary citizens who all have extraordinary mental and physical abilities who form a team to solve crimes. The team led by Dr. Lee Rosen will investigate cases that hint at other Alpha activity to uncover what the CIA, FBI and Pentagon has not been able or willing to solve. The cast of Alphas includes David Strathairn as Dr. Lee Rosen along with Warren Christie, Malik Yoba, Laura Mennell, Ryan Cartwright and Azita Ghanizada.

Former Seinfeld cast member, Jason Alexander is developing a new dramatic television project for CBS produced by CBS Television Studios. The network granted a script order for a yet-to-be-titled one-hour project that would be helmed and executive produced by Alexander. The plot would have Alexander playing a former TV star that is down on his luck and ends up joining his ex-wife’s detective agency. Simon Barry is writing and co-executive producing with Carol Yumkas serving as producer.

At ABC, Victor Fresco, executive producer of Better Off Ted is developing a sitcom titled Sunnyside based on a hit Swedish TV format. The comedy is about a guy who moves with his wife and child back to his hometown where the couple tries not to become their parents. Fresco is adapting the project and will be the executive producer along with Warren Littlefield and Henrik Bastin. ABC Studios will produce.

FishBowl Worldwide Media, helmed by Vin Di Bona and Bruce Gersh have sold two drama projects to FOX and The CW, cites THR. FOX picked up The Danger List, a medical thriller about a doctor who investigates medical abuses, crimes and conspiracies. Stephen Gallagher will write and produce. The CW acquired Beautiful Strangers about on two young thieves who are given a second chance as informants for a new FBI unit. Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars, Party Down) will executive produce while Dan Thompsen will pen the script. FishBowl is producing with CBS Television Studios.

HBO’s True Blood is adding a handful of new cast members for the upcoming fourth season. Christina Moore will play a recurring role as a Texas housewife with special abilities. Moore is also a regular on TNT’s HawthoRNe and will firm up her new True Blood role while the TNT drama is on hiatus. Neil Hopkins and Chris Butler will both appear in multi-episodes runs of True Blood with Hopkins playing Claude, brother to Claudine, the queen of the fairies while Butler will play Emory, a conservative shapeshifter.

Casting producers are looking for fun, outgoing people living in The Franklin Lakes area of NJ or those living within 30 minutes of the area. If you are planning a life-changing party event for an engagement, baby shower or wedding shower, welcome home party, graduation party or other type of party with a good story taking place in mid-January and inviting 40-50 people, please send an email to: [email protected]. The television show will provide party planning, design from an expert TV personality and the network will supply the majority of the money for the event and the staffing, though producers are asking for the homeowners (person throwing the party) to contribute a minimum of $5,000 to make the event more personal. If possible, please also include a video of yourself and partner showing your personalities and why you need help to make this a once-in-a-lifetime party.

Casting Call: Nationally syndicated court show Judge Karen’s Court invites California residents who have a legal dispute with another person to be a guest on the show.
