~ MORE STUFF ~

Next spring, PBS premieres the new series America Revealed on April 11 at 10p (check local listings).  America Revealed follows Yul Kwon as he criss-crosses the country to trace movement and communications that merge to manufacture goods, transport people and materials, grow food and power our high-tech nation.

Weight loss goals and the New Year go hand-in-hand and Cooking Channel premieres two new series based on this theme:

  • Not My Mama’s Meals produced by Follow Productions stars Bobby Deen who takes his famous mother’s (Paula Deen) southern comfort food recipes and turns them into leaner, lighter yet still delicious versions.  Special guest appearances by Paula Deen, Daphne Oz and others are slated for the show debuting January 4 at 9p. 
  • Drop 5 lbs with Good Housekeeping produced by Scripps Networks in partnership with Good Housekeeping is based on the magazine’s weight loss column and is hosted by Melissa d’Arabian.  The series will feature other health experts and offers viewers a new way to eat better through shopping tips, workout techniques and dining do’s and don’ts.  Series premieres January 21 at 11a.

Weekly series America’s Money Class with Suze Orman is set to debut on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network January 9 at 9p.  Each week, financial guru Orman will offer a master class on money in front of a live studio audience, answering questions in person and via video conference.  In the finale episode, Orman will give viewers a chance to win up to $50,000 when they take her final money exam. Michael Levitt Productions produces the series.

A second season is in store for La La’s Full Court Life on VH1.  The upcoming sophomore season follows actress/TV personality La La Anthony and her NBA star husband, Carmelo Anthony as they adjust to living in the Big Apple after Carmelo was traded from the Denver Nuggets to the New York Knicks.  The series is produced by 51 Minds Entertainment, Krossover Entertainment and The Collective. 

In time to air its holiday episodes, SCIENCE opens a third season of Oddities on December 17 at 9p.  The series is set inside the New York City shop Obscura Antiques & Oddities and hones in on eccentric pop culture items and colorful collectors.  Oddities is produced by SCIENCE by Leftfield Productions.

On Monday, truTV debuted a second season of Lizard Lick Towing at 10p and the half-hour premiere episode clocked in with 2.2 million total viewers; 1.2 million among A18-49; and 621,000 with A18-34 viewers.

Tuesday night’s series premiere of Storage Wars Texas on A&E Network at 1030p attracted 4.1 million total viewers and 2.1 million with A25-54.  The series launch has become the network’s most-watched original series premiere in its history among total viewers and A25-54.  The opening episode also tallied 2.1 million with A18-49.  Storage Wars Texas is produced by Original Productions, a FremantleMedia Company for A&E and the next new episode will air December 13 at 1030p.

Also on Tuesday at 10p, FX aired the fourth season finale of Sons of Anarchy which racked up 4.2 million total viewers; 2.1 million with A18-49.  FX previously has renewed Sons of Anarchy for a fifth season.

Earlier this week, Discovery Channel debuted the new series Moonshiners in the 10p hour which delivered a 1.59 A25-54 rating and 2.83 million total viewers.

TV and movie actor, Harry Morgan, best known for his beloved role as Colonel Sherman T. Potter on the television series M*A*S*H died in Los Angeles at the age of 96.  In addition to his iconic role on M*A*S*H, Mr. Morgan starred in the television series Dragnet, Pete and Gladys and The D.A. as well as more than 100 films.  Despite his busy acting career, Mr. Morgan was quoted as saying Col. Potter was “the best part I ever had.”  Mr. Morgan won an Emmy Award in 1980 for his role as Col. Potter.  He also continued playing Col. Potter in the spinoff series, AfterMASH which lasted two years.  In the latter part of his career, Mr. Morgan had guest star roles in such shows as 3rd Rock From the Sun and Murder, She Wrote.  He is survived by his wife and three sons.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE, & CLEARANCE ~

Gas Station TV (GSTV), the gas station video network made an exclusive agreement with Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. to offer news and entertainment segments to viewers at the pump.  Throughout each day, the deal allows Turner to custom-produce and deliver stories via HLN as well as entertainment news from HLN’s Showbiz Tonight.

For its second season, one-hour daytime talk show Anderson was renewed by the Allbritton station group.  Anderson, distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution and produced by StrongChild Productions in association with Telepictures Productions, is now cleared in more than 89% of the US for 2012.   Allbritton stations include WJLA/Washington, WHTM/Harrisburg, KATV/Little Rock, KTUL/Tulsa and WSET/Roanoke.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

The CW handed a script commitment to J.J. Abrams and Mark Schwahn for a drama titled Maine set at an inn.  Schwahn will write and serve as EP via Mastermind; Abrams and Bryan Burk will also be EPs through their Warner Bros. Television-based Bad Robot.  

In 2012, BBC America will co-produce a six-part one-hour miniseries sequel to its drama The Hour.  Abi Morgan is on board as creator and writer and the project will also be produced by Kudos Film and TV. The miniseries will pick up beginning 1957 in this drama depicting a highly competitive newsroom.  New actors added to the miniseries include Peter Capaldi, Hannah Tointon and Tom Burke.

Lifetime is moving forward with a two-hour original movie/backdoor pilot titled Sworn to Silence based on the book of the same name by Linda Castillo.  The project selected Neve Campbell to star in the drama set in the Amish farming community of Painter’s Mill, Ohio that witnessed a series of brutal murders.  Kate Burkholder (Campbell), who survived the tragedy as a young girl and left the Amish life behind, returns fifteen years later as the town’s new Chief of Police.  Barbara Lieberman and Poppy Montgomery are executive producers and Campbell will also serve as co-executive producer.  Furthermore, Campbell has forged a development deal with Lifetime involving scripted dramas and original movies.

Comedy Central released details on a slew of projects added to its 2011-2012 development slate:

  • The Burn stars Jeff Ross and his comedic friends as they roast the week’s hot topics. Ross, Mike Gibbons and Tagline Television are all executive producers on the project.
  • Braunger is a single-camera scripted comedy based on the life of comedian Matt Braunger.  The project is created and executive produced by Braunger and Brent Forrester, who will also direct.  Avalon Entertainment’s David Martin is EP along with the company’s Dan Lubetkin as co-EP.
  • Robots is an animated show depicting household electronics battling their slacker owner.  Kumail Nanjiani, Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky are on board to write and serve as EPs.
  • Nathan for You described as a reality-scripted hybrid, features Canadian writer/comedian Nathan Fielder who uses his finance degree and life knowledge to help struggling businesses.  Fielder, Michael Koman and David Kneebone are all listed as EPs.
  • TripTank features a collection of animated shorts using a variety of writers and creators including Tommy Blancha, Tom Gammill, Jon Glaser, Laura Kightlinger, Joe Mande, Bob Odenkirk and Duncan Trussell. The project is from executive producers Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico of ShadowMachine and Tom Gianas.
  • @RobDelaney is billed as a variety show starring comedian and Twitter sensation Delaney who will showcase videos, interview guests and Twitter trends.  Delaney will serve as EP along with Avalon Entertainment’s David Martin, Jon Thoday, Richard Allen-Turner and Kara Baker; Avalon’s Dan Lubetkin will also co-EP.
  • Eugene! is a sketch show from the perspective of comedian Eugene Mirman who will serve as EP in addition to Jon Watts and Chris Ford.
  • Overloaded highlights weekly social media trends with comedian Michael Kosta who will be an EP along with Infomania’s David Nickoll, Will Ward and Roar Entertainment’s Jordan Tilzer.
  • Untitled Amy Schumer  Following her appearance on the network’s Charlie Sheen roast, Schumer will be the EP and develop a pilot and a stand-up special.
  • Untitled Cyanide and Happiness is an animated program featuring the bizarre humor of a world of stick figures from the creators of Cyanide and Happiness web-comics.  Kristipher Matthew Wilson, Robert Andrew DenBleyker, David McElfatrick and Matthew Melvin are all creators and EPs on the project.
  • Untitled Wyatt Cenac is a sketch narrative concept based on the 1980s public affairs shows that will be hosted, written and executive produced by The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’s Wyatt Cenac.  Cenac will be the producer along with Generate’s David Rath.

Lou Reda Productions is developing an unscripted series with Bobby Brown, the owner of Bobby Brown Bail Bonds and Investigations and featured in A&E’s Dog the Bounty Hunter and international explorer and FBI-trained homicide investigator, Bob Cornuke.  The program will follow the duo as they delve into cold case murder investigations as well as Brown’s daily duties involving his bail bonds business.

Chris Zylka was bumped to series regular on The CW’s The Secret Circle.  Zylka plays Jake, a witch hunter. 

Casting Call:  Media Headquarters is spearheading a search for smart people to appear in the original two-hour special event, Canada’s Smartest Person airing on CBC Television in March 2012.  The show is looking for the smartest person in Canada or you can nominate someone you know now through January 1. Tuesday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX had the winning lineup Tuesday with a 2.9/8 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  A new episode of Glee on FOX topped at 8p with a 3.0/8 followed by ABC’s frosh comedies Last Man Standing and Man Up! with an average of 2.2/6.  FOX stayed at #1 during 9p with New Girl and Raising Hope at an average of 2.8/7 and sharing second place was a repeat episode of CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles and NBC’s The Biggest Loser with each delivering a 2.2/5.  Then at 10p, NBC’s The Biggest Loser reached the summit at 2.3/6 with CBS’ rerun of Unforgettable next at 1.7/4 and ABC’s Body of Proof was third at 1.5/4.

Discovery Communications added Elizabeth Newell as SVP/Global Corporate Legal and Savalle Sims as SVP/Litigation and Intellectual Property.   Elizabeth will be based in New York to head the company’s global corporate and mergers and acquisitions legal activities while Savalle, based at Discovery’s Silver Spring headquarters will manage the company’s Litigation and Trademark legal teams.  Both will report to Bruce Campbell, Chief Development Officer/General Counsel.
