Cyn opsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 7, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

The holidays came early for the home entertainment industry with this week’s DVD release of Disney’s Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dean Man’s Chest, which sold close to 5 million units in North America on its first day, yesterday, all but tying Warner Bros. release of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire last March.  To give some perspective, Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl sold 11 million units on its first day back in December 2003, setting a live-action DVD record. Black Pearl ultimately sold 18 million units and was the biggest selling live-action DVD.  The all time bestselling DVD is Disney’s Finding Nemo selling about $28 million units. As for the top live-action DVD seller of 2006, the race is between Dead Man’s Chest, Goblet of Fire, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; and X-Men: The Last Stand.  The third Pirates of the Caribbean movie is slated for release in theatres Memorial Day weekend 2007.

Miramax has tapped director Mark Herman to helm its movie adaptation of John Boyne’s young adult novel, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, according to a Production Weekly report.  Set in Europe during WWII, the story, which Herman adapted for the movie, revolves around Bruno, a young boy living with his well-to-do family in Berlin, when the family is forced to move to Poland due to his Father’s job.  Once in his new home in Poland, the sad and lonely Bruno befriends a boy his age from a different background.  Cryptic enough for you?  Yes, well there is a reason – which as adults you will pick-up on quickly.  I read the book over the summer and you should too – it won’t take you long.  Produced by David Heyman (Harry Potter), The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is slated to go into production spring 2007 in Europe.

India’s Star One is set to premiere Ghost Bana Dost, a new live-action TV series produced by Face Entertainment.  The series follows the story of Dabboo, a rich young orphaned boy.  Left in the care of his uncle and aunt who are far more interested in his inheritance than him, Dabboo is timid and scared, until he finds a new friend in the form of Ni Ke, a hip cool ghost.  Filled with humor and special effects the series bows December 19, at 8:30p.

Media group Emap has sold its Bliss Magazine, the UK teen girls 14-17 magazine, to Panini UK.  The terms of the deal were not announced.  Earlier this year Panini UK acquired Mizz Magazine, targeted to tween girls 11-14, a fully redesigned and smaller print version of Mizz and a website for the magazine were launched this fall.  An Italian publisher, Panini is best known for the licensed sticker albums it produces including Batman, Scooby-Doo and various soccer teams.

Bandai Visual USA has launched a new anime community for its US Honneamise label on MySpace.  Fans can find information and download focused on anime DVD titles released by the label.  Currently featured at Honneamise are the classic anime series Gunbuster (for teens), including a clip from the re-mastered version of the TV series, as well as downloads (wallpaper, buddy icons etc).  The re-mastered version of Gunbuster is slated to be released on DVD under the Bandai Visual USA Honneamise label and be distributed by Image Entertainment, for the first time in North America, February 20, 2007.  The 3-disc DVD set includes six episodes on each disc, with newly translated English subtitles, and a 24-page color booklet.  ( )

Cartoon Network and Warner Home Video will release the first seasons of the animated series Ben 10 and Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends on 2-disc DVD sets next year; on February 6 and March 6 respectively.

The Brainy Baby Company has partnered with the Chick-fil-A restaurant chain to launch a board book promotion at Toy Fair this February.  The promotion, which runs February-April 2007, will offer one of four different Brainy Baby board books as part of the Chick-fil-A Kid’s Meal Program.  The books are available for free when a meal is purchase for kids ages three and under.  Based on Brain Baby’s DVDs, each of the four board books are eight pages long and are designed to introduce simple early educational concepts. The four titles are, Kids Love Art, Kids Love Languages, Kids Love Learning and Kids Love Shapes & Colors
