On Christmas night, Univision Network debuts a follow up series to its successful summer reality show, Pequenos Gigantes (Little Giants) when new series, El Gran Show de los Peques opens at 8p. In the new series, young stars are back in the two-hour weekly show singing, dancing and participating in interviews, parodies, acting and more.
Beginning January 15, FOX welcomes new animation series Napoleon Dynamite as part of the network’s Animation Domination lineup on Sunday nights in the 830p time slot. As of this date, FOX’s Animation Domination schedule includes The Cleveland Show at 730p; The Simpsons at 8p; Napoleon Dynamite at 830p; Family Guy at 9p; and American Dad at 930p.
Early in the New Year, A&E Network brings back new seasons of Hoarders and Intervention with back-to-back premieres on January 2 at 9p and 10p respectively. The fifth season of Hoarders, produced by Screaming Flea Productions, captures more dramatic moments and emotional transformations. Intervention opens its twelfth season profiling people whose dependency on drugs and alcohol leads them to other compulsive behaviors. Intervention is from GRB Entertainment.
Our Canadian neighbors can now see the critically-acclaimed drama The Wire created by David Simon as it returns to HBO Canada, a multiplex channel of Astral’s The Movie Network (Eastern Canada) and Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central (Western Canada). Beginning with the first season, The Wire is presently airing Thursdays at 8p on HBO Canada as well as via HBO Canada OnDemand and through the On Demand Online services offered by participating television providers. Season two will be available on demand and online starting in January while seasons three to five will each in subsequent months.
As the year comes to a close, Nielsen offers up some Tops of 2011 tid-bits:
- Super Bowl XLV on February 6, 2011 between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers was the top individual telecast of the year with 111 million viewers, which also makes it the most-watched telecast ever.
- FOX’s American Idol continues to reign as the top primetime program with its Wednesday and Thursday airings, a position the show has held since its fifth season in 2007.
- The most time-shifted program with the highest audience share of the year is FX’s frosh American Horror Story.
- And, the series that generated the most online buzz with a 54% share of mentions was NBC’s Chuck, according to NM Incite, a Nielsen/McKinsey company.
John Sadler, VP/Affiliate and Distribution Sales with Jewish Life TV (JLTV) died on December 19 at the age of 48. During his career, Mr. Sadler had worked at AMC, VOY, Tech TV and Jones Education Networks. Mr. Sadler is survived by his wife and two children.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: NBC claimed the #1 spot among A18-49 viewers Tuesday at 2.0/6, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, CBS won with a NCIS repeat at 2.0/6 and NBC’s new Who’s Still Standing? was a tenth of a rating point behind at 1.9/6. NBC did best by a skosh at 9p with its SNL Special: Gilly Christmas at 2.2/6 while CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles and Univision’s La Fuerza del Destino were close behind as they tied for #2 at 2.1/6 each. NBC polished off the final win of the night with more of the SNL holiday special at 2.1/6 and CBS placed second with an Unforgettable encore at 1.7/5.
