CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

12/22/05

Good morning.  It’s Thursday, December 22, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Jeff Bewkes has been named President/COO of Time Warner Inc., upped from his post as Chairman of the Time Warner Entertainment and Networks Group which oversees HBO, The WB, Turner Broadcasting and New Line Cinema.   The move is an indication Bewkes may be the heir apparent to Richard Parsons as CEO of Time Warner whose contract expires in May 2008. Meanwhile Don Logan, Chairman of TW’s Media and Communications Group, will retire at year’s end, and will then become a non-executive Chairman of TW Cable’s Board of Directors. Time Warner was busy on Tuesday with the 5% sale of AOL to Google, a deal which carried a $1 billion price tag.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *For those of you asking about the show Reunion on Fox, and in the last couple of days there’s been quite a few of you, it’s gone.  It’s last episode was on December 15 when 50% of its lead-in audience from The O.C. turned elsewhere, leaving a slim 3.5 million tuning in.  Originally the final episodes of this show were expected to air in January on Thursdays at 9p, but that has changed when Fox moved The O.C. to 9p, and slide in back-to-back eps of That 70’s Show at 8p.

Telemundo will also be joining Nielsen Media Research’s National Television Index (NTI) effective later on this month.  Prior to this, Telemundo was only subscribed to Nielsen’s National Hispanic Television Index (NHTI).  Earlier this week, Nielsen and Univision announced jointly that Univision would also be included in the NTI as of December 26.

The season finale of Nip/Tuck on FX Tuesday night delivered 3.9 million viewers in the A18-49 category, the single largest gathering of adults 18-49 the network has every experienced.  The previous holder of that record was last year’s Nip/Tuck finale which drew in 3.6 million 18-49ers.  Among total viewers, the finale pulled in 5.7 million sets of eyes.  As for its full season, Nip/Tuck averaged 3.9 million total viewers, and 2.7 million A18-49.

The Syndicated Network Television Association (SNTA) will not have its annual ad sales conference in 2006 where syndicators had a chance to meet with media buyers in NY, LA and Chicago in a single day-long event.  According to Broadcasting & Cable, that format will be replaced with an alternative next year wherein meetings will still be scheduled, tho not shoulder to shoulder with buyers from other shops.  Rather, syndicators will have an opportunity to meet with buyers at their own offices, where SNTA Mitch Burg says he hopes there can be a more “dynamic dialogue.”

Al Sharpton says he is no longer interested in having his own sitcom.  Or, better put by the man himself, “I’m not interested in being Archie Bunker, I’m looking forward to becoming George Bush.”  The minister was in talks with CBS to star in the tentatively titled Al in the Family.

Bridges TV!, the network designed to appeal to the Muslim population, will debut a new season of Predominantly Legal on December 29 at 9:30p.  The show spotlights legal issues that pertain to American Muslims with host Sharon Stiller.  The premiere episode will focus on civil rights experts and the FBI.

The WPIX-NY Yule Log is a Christmas tradition, and this year is no exception.  On Christmas morning from 7a-11a, the Tribune owned NY station will once again air the loop of the burning log in the fireplace, a warm little ditty for those without a fireplace.  And if that’s not enough, they have also made it available for downloading onto your video iPod ( click here) so you can take it with you anywhere you go.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *ABC has signed a development deal with Sex and the City creator Darren Star, in which Star will develop two projects for the network, and the network has committed to picking up one for pilot. According to Variety, this is a deal very similar to one Star signed with UPN earlier this year.  As part of the two project deal, one comedy project the network is already considering is called The Model, set in New York City and is similar to the vintage series That Girl, tho in the modeling world.

ABC has ordered a pilot from Ben Silverman and exec producer Salma Hayek called Betty La Fea, which translates to Ugly Betty.  The project was originally based on a Colombian telenovela about a very attractive executive who has an penchant for attractive secretaries.  In hopes of curbing that drive, he hires Betty, a considerably less attractive, albeit efficient, assistant.

NBC has moved the comedy project Heist from the pilot column to the pick up column, with production set to begin in early 2006.  From Hypnotic, NBC Universal TV and Sony Pictures Television, the story is about a group of thieves conspiring to rob three jewelry stores simultaneously on Rodeo Drive, and would spend the entire season coming up with the plan and then executing it. The cast includes Dougray Scott, Steve Harris, Seymour Cassel, Reno Wilson, Marika Dominczyk, David Walton, Michele Hicks and Billy Gardell.

TMC Entertainment has launched a new unit dedicated to historical and contemporary event documentary productions.  TMC Docs’ first order of business is a production for PBS called Walking The Bible, a 3-hour high-def miniseries, produced in collaboration with WGBH and UK-based Maya Vision International.  Scheduled to air next month on PBS, the show is based on the novel by Bruce Feiler of the same title.  The second production on the slate is a 6-hour miniseries called The Route to Christianity, also based on a novel by Bruce Feiler called Where God Was Born.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Liza Kalikow has been promoted to Scheduler/Cinemax Program Planning and Scheduling.  She will continue to work on Cinemax On Demand, Cinemax.com and the Top Theatrical Competitive Grid–which assists future long range planning for both HBO and Cinemax.  Liza will be reporting to Jill Stern. Also joining the group is John Tierno as Director/Cinemax Program Planning and Scheduling.  John will be reporting to Andrew Goldman and his responsibilities will include scheduling, overseeing the analysis of movie inventory, competitive forecasting and long-range planning of channels.
The Retro Television Network announced that it has named Kristy Kachtik, VP/ Affiliate Relations for the network.  In her position Kristy will oversee all new affiliate acquisitions.

John Orlando has been named SVP/Washington for the new CBS Corporation. In this new position, John will be responsible for oversight, formulation and implementation of the company’s public policy and government relations objectives.   As CBS’s lead lobbyist, he will be the company’s principal contact with the Congress and the Administration. John begins Jan. 17.

WCBS-TV has named Bruce Erik Brauer as Director of Creative Services, it was announced today by Peter Dunn, President and General Manager.

Multicultural agency The Brenalt Group named John Doscher as Partner and GM. He will be responsible for the firm’s operations.  He joins Alex Brenalt, Roberto Adrian and Hugo Chang as owners.

Sharon Frazier was upped to VP/Media Sales and Marketing for Cox Media. The announcement was made by Billy Farina, SVP/Advertising Sales. Sharon will be responsible for marketing, research, production, national sales, and new media advertising initiatives for Cox Media.  She also will manage planning and research activities and work closely with local operations to develop strong business strategies to grow cable advertising revenues.

* RATINGS *Tuesday — A18-49 Analysis:   NBC led the night on Tuesday with an overall 3.9/11 A18-49, according to final numbers from Nielsen Media Research. ABC was #2 with a 3.5/10, followed by Fox 2.7/8, CBS 2.4/7, UPN 1.2/3, WB .9/3.  At 8p NBC and Howie Mandel led with a 4.6/13 for Deal or No Deal.  At 9p My Name is Earl pulled a 4.6/12, while the two-hour Barbara Walters Special from 9-11p drew a 4.0/11, well ahead of the competition.
