12/22/05 Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 22, 2005, and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing. Beginning in January the BBC will shift its Saturday morning kids programming from BBC One over to BBC Two for a trial period of three months. Why make such a move after 30 years? According to the BBC, the idea is to “iron out a scheduling anomaly” created when breaking news preempts the Saturday morning kids programming on BBC One. The policy has always been that during breaking news, kid’s programming is moved to BBC Two in order to make room for ongoing coverage on BBC One. As for BBC Two’s Saturday morning line-up which includes Breakfast and Saturday Kitchen, it will flip flop over to BBC One for the trial period. If the channel-to-channel programming swap is considered a success, tho no parameters were offered as to how success will be measured, the experiment will become a permanent move. Don’t let it confuse you that during the week the kids programming always airs on BBC Two, and Breakfast always airs on BBC One. Gravity Co. Ltd., a South Korean-based developer and distributor of online games, has agreed to invest 1b Yen in Online Game Revolution Vol. 1, a Japanese investment fund that is investing in companies that develop online games in Japan. The fund, which has a total proposed investment kitty of 10b Yen, will be overseen by Movida Investment Inc., an affiliate of SoftBank Group, as the general partner of the fund. Several Japanese and Korean developers of online games, including CJ Internet Corp. have agreed to invest in Online Game Fund. Gravity is best known for Ragnarok Online, its massive multi-player online game which in addition to South Korea is available for play in China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Brazil, France and Belgium among others. NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT Imax Corporation and Warner Bros. upcoming original Imax 3D movie Deep Sea 3D will be co-narrated by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, and will feature musical score by composer Danny Elfman (Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Chicago, Spider-Man 2, Men in Black, Edward Scissorhands, Batman, Batman Returns etc) as well as a member of the band Oingo Boingo. Deep Sea 3D is slated for release on March 3, 2006. Deep Sea 3D was shot by Director/Cinematographer Howard Hall and produced by Toni Myers, with Michele Hall serving as Producer of Howard Hall Productions. MARKETING/LICENSING Toy company Spin Master Ltd. has entered into a global license agreement with C2C Technologies, a bioscience company that is focused on the development of color change process technology, for its colored bubbles. Under the deal Spin Master Ltd. has the exclusive international license rights to market and sell the colored bubbles based on C2C Technologies temporary color technology. Spin Master toy brands include, Air Hogs, Aquadoodle, Bella Dancerella, Mighty Beanz, Slurpee Maker etc. Davis-Anderson Merchandising Corp and Dynamite Entertainment are introducing a new ongoing comic book series featuring the Highlander franchise, which is a property for teens and up. The new Dynamite comics will include Highlander characters from both the film and TV series, with the initial comics following the events from the first movie. The original Highlander film (Fox, 1986, rated R) starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a Scottish clansman born in 1518, who learns that he is an immortal being who must use his wits and sword to do battle against other immortals to survive. The movie also starred Sean Connery and Clancy Brown. This now cult classic film led to four additional Highlander feature films as well as VHS/DVD’s, an animated series, fourteen original books and licensed merchandise. The Highlander franchise also includes the TV series, Highlander: The Series, which was later aired in syndication and was released on DVD/VHS. MORE KIDS STUFF Animazoo UK, manufacturer of the Gypsy range of motion capture systems, has opened a new motion capture studio in Brighton, in the UK. A seaside city, Brighton is has become home to any number of digital media production companies and studios, sometimes called Silicon Beach. The Jim Henson Company has named the honorees of the newly established Jim Henson Honors, an annual program that recognizes organizations, individuals or products that reflect the values and philosophy of Jim Henson, and on which his company he founded in 1955. Honorees were chosen by the artists and staff at The Jim Henson Company, who were asked to nominate recipients who inspire them in their daily work, as well as share the above mentioned Jim Henson and Henson Co. values/philosophy. The four recipients of the first annual 2005 Jim Henson Honors: Celebration Honor – JK Rowling (author/Harry Potter); Creativity Honor – The Gorillaz (animated virtual rock group); Community Honor – Bill Haber (Board of Directors, Save the Children, for his personal commitment); Technology Honor – The Prius (Toyota’s gas-electric hybrid automobile).
