Cyn opsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 21, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

PRIMEDIA Inc. revealed yesterday that as of 4Q 2006, it will “discontinue operation” of its Education Segment, while it is in the process of exploring strategic options for the division.  PRIMEDIA’s Education Segment is home to Channel One, Films Media Group and PRIMEDIA Healthcare.  According to an AdAge report, the company has been in talks with possible partners, including Disney, about a potential sale of the segment, while at the same time reporting another source saying the Disney talks did not progress very far.  As of now there is no word about Channel One layoffs or about shuttering the unit.

Cellit, LLC, a developer of mobile marketing applications, has inked a deal with Cinema Screen Media, LLC, to provide mobile marketing services to CSM’s clients.  According to the agreement, CSM’s on-screen advertisers will be incorporate text messaging features into their pre-movie slideshow displays, which in turn will allow for moviegoers to interact with specific promotions and get additional product information, voice their opinion and/or play a game/contest.   CSM began offering the service to advertisers in the Phoenix this month, and plans are underway for a national rollout.

The FUNimation Channel, a 24/7 digital channel, can now be seen live by 1+ million HH in the Seattle area on KHCV TV-45, Seattle’s digital channel 44-3.  OlympuSAT is the exclusive distributor of the FUNimation Channel, which is now available to video service providers as a 24/7 linear channel and as syndicated programming.

Nick Jr. has given the go-ahead on a third season (20 episodes) of Go, Diego, Go!.  The network will premiere the new Go, Diego, Go special episode, Great Jaguar Rescue, on Martin Luther King Day, Monday January 15, 2007 at 9:30a, which is the basis for the upcoming Diego Live Tour that will make its way to 50 markets nationwide starting February 1.  To support the tour and series, Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment will release Go, Diego, Go! The Great Jaguar Rescue on DVD, on January 16, 2007.  The DVD will include animal stickers related to the episode, as well as a sneak look at The Wonder Pets! DVD slated for release in spring 2007.

VIZ, Media, LLC will launch a new look for Shojo Beat, its female-targeted monthly manga/comic magazine, with the January 2007 issue.  The new design includes a new color pallet and fonts as well as the introduction of a mascot and spokesperson, Beat Girl, who will be featured on the cover. Each month the magazine will present a different artist’s adaptation of Beat Girl.  In addition to the serialized shojo manga titles offered in Shojo Beat each month, the first issue of the year will include: Girl Hero, a new column showcasing real girls kids/teens/young adults taking part in their communities; expanded Fashion & Beauty and Culture & Trends sections, the former including DIY projects and the latter highlighting art/music/movie stories from the US and Japan; SB & You will be home to existing features Drawing With Yuu (manga lesson by artist Yuu Watase), reader letters, contests and fan art.

Digital Media Exchange (DME), a publisher/distributor of online games, has launched its first kid/tween-targeted online game service in the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore.  In an effort to encourage kids and parents playing together, Mobiuskids includes a range of family-oriented games/activities and educational games as well as casual and downloadable arcade games.  At launch, DME introduces two casual titles to the region, Disney’s MMOG Toontown Online and the virtual pet game GoPets.  Other content includes a piggybank, task scheduler and goal tracker.  Most games on the site require a subscription, with each country having its own subscription offering.

Mighty Fine has appointed Stone America Licensing to helm the North American positioning and launch of its lifestyle brand, French Kitty.  Popular internationally, Mighty Fine introduced French Kitty six years ago as a T-Shirt design, which grew to include branded products in a range of categories as well as a series of books and the first French Kitty store that opened two-years ago in Shibuyo Japan, followed last year with four more retail stores.  Planned for 2007 are new stores in Thailand, Singapore, Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan and China as well as beauty salons and intimate stores. Mighty Fine is also working with Jane Evans Licensing Consultancy for European expansion.

4Kids Entertainment’s Yu-Gi-Oh! GX trading cards and characters along with pets from Hasbro’s Littlest Pet Shop will be available in McDonald’s Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals beginning December 22, 2006 through January 18, 2007.  For kids who choose to get a Littlest Pet Shop toy, each Happy Meal will come with one of eight mini pets, including four critters, in two different colors and each with an interchangeable carrier.  On the Yu-Gi-Oh GX side, Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals offerings includes three of 20 exclusive trading cards and one of eight different characters based toys.

Looking to provide healthier eats at its US theme parks, Universal will begin offering a new selection of healthier side dishes, trans-fat-free foods and drink options beginning December 24, 2006 at most locations in throughout the its parks.  Aiming to have all of the food in the parks completely trans-fat-free by the end of 2007, Universal’s plans also include making nutritional information about its foods to guests.

Looking to answer the questions, where do kids get their digital content, and how do they use it? The NPD Group has released the findings of its Kids & Digital Content report.  The findings are based on an attitudinal study of members of its online consumer panel of mom’s of K2-14. Highlights of the Kids & Digital Content report:

  • In a typical week Kids 2-14 who use a portable digital music player spend approximately 4.5 hours using it
  • 33% of kids who use cell phones play games on the cell phone
  • Among kids who watch movies and/or TV on one of the key devices measured, 46% are most likely to watch this type of content (movie/TV shows) on the computer.
  • Kids who buy or acquire ringtones/ringtunes for their cell phones get new content on average two times a month

TV-Loonland has appointed Bernd Conrad as its new Head of Licensing and Merchandising (L&M).  He is charged with developing and implementing a strategy for marketing and L&M opportunities.  In addition, he responsibilities include identifying and managing licensing agents internationally and overseeing L&M in German speaking Europe and pan-international deals.  Conrad will report to COO Olivier Dumont, and will work out of the company’s Munich office from January 2007. Most recently Conrad was Licensing Director, Jetix Consumer Products Germany, responsible for Merchandising and Home Video in Germany speaking countries.
