Showtime renewed its comedy series The Green Room with Paul Provenza for a six-episode sophomore season. The show brings together top comedic legends in an intimate, roundtable setting with comedian Paul Provenza as moderator and executive producer. On tap for the second season will be comedians Ray Romano, Kathy Griffin, Margaret Cho, Tommy Chong, Lewis Black, Ron White and Joe Rogan along with comedy writer/director/producer Judd Apatow. Production begins in January and the new season will debut later in the year. In addition to Provenza, the show is executive produced by Barbara Romen and Kelly Carlin, daughter of George Carlin will serve as producer.

Hallmark Channel launches an all-new season of Petkeeping with Marc Morrone on January 3 at 12p as the series makes its exclusive cable debut on the network. Morrone, who is Martha Stewart’s pet advice guy, dispenses his knowledge to viewers about taking care of all sorts of pets in each half-hour episode. The daily series is executive produced by Martha Stewart.

Actress Debi Mazar, known for her roles in the film Goodfellas and on HBO’s Entourage, is also a foodie and will star with her husband Gabriele Corcos in the new series, Extra Virgin for the Cooking Channel. The new series debuts January 19 at 10p and will blend Mazar’s Queens, NY background with Gabriele’s Tuscan homeland as they share their passion for food and family. The show will be shot in Los Angeles, Florence and Fiesole, Italy. 

MTV is readying the new docu-series Teen Mom 2 opening January 11 at 10p. The series follows teen moms, Chelsea, Jenelle, Kailyn and Leah from the cast of the second season of 16 and Pregnant. The series, like MTV’s series Teen Mom, offers first-hand accounts from the young woman as they each face the difficult challenges of being young while raising a child.

Comedy Central is reupping its animated comedy series Ugly Americans for a second season with 14 episodes slated to premiere in June 2011.  The series is about Mark Lilly (voice talent of Matt Oberg), a social worker at the “Department of Integration” where he helps new citizens, human and otherwise, adapt to life in chaotic New York City. Season one of Ugly Americans, which debuted on March 17, 2010, averaged 2 million total viewers during its run. The series is created by Devin Clark and is executive produced by David M. Stern and Daniel Powell; Aaron Augenblick and Richard Ferguson-Hull are animation directors and Lisa Leingang serves as the executive in charge of production for the network.

BBC America outlined its upcoming new programming lineup of sci-fi fare for its Supernatural Saturdays:

  • The block begins the New Year with the return of the series Primeval on January 1 at 9p.
  • Following the finale of Primeval, the network boots up the new frontier drama Outcasts in early 2011, airing at 9p on Saturdays.
  • In spring 2011, BBC America will roll out a new season of Doctor Who and the third season of Being Human. Doctor Who will be split into two blocks of new episodes with the first airing in the spring and the second later in the fall.
  • Down the road in 2011, Supernatural Saturdays will showcase the new six-part series Bedlam.
  • Additionally, BBC America will introduce a sci-fi block in daytime with encore episodes of Doctor Who and Torchwood as well as the premiere of X-Files. The weekday block begins January 3 at 10a with Doctor Who followed by the launch of X-Files at 11a.

ESPN concluded its 30 for 30 documentary sports film series last Saturday with Pony Exce$$ from Thaddeus D. Matula and the film delivered an average of 1.8 million homes or 2.5 million total viewers. This airing of Pony Exce$$ has now become ESPN’s most-watched documentary film ever.

Richard B. (Dick) Noonan, 78, Co-Founder of 44 Blue Productions died last Saturday. Before co-founding the Studio City-based 44 Blue Productions with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. Noonan had a distinguished career in the military and politics in Oregon. He served as Executive Director of the Oregon Republican Party followed by an appointment by President George H.W. Bush to the Department of Labor and also sat on the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Armed Services. After retiring from politics, Mr. Noonan joined 44 Blue full-time and was technical advisor for all military series produced by the company. Additionally, he was president of the Oregon Film & Video Foundation and appeared on FOX News Channel as a military analyst. Mr. Noonan is survived by his daughter, Stephanie, EVP of 44 Blue, two sons and several grandchildren and his beloved Golden Retriever friend, Ranger. Contributions in Mr. Noonan’s name can be made to The Disabled American Veterans Association or Golden Bond Rescue.

AMC granted a full series order for its post-Civil War era drama, Hell on Wheels. The series centers on former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannan (Anson Mount) whose thirst for vengeance following the death of his wife leads him West to work on the construction crew of the first Transcontinental Railroad. Entertainment One (eOne) is the studio producing the series. Endemol will hold all television distribution rights for Hell on Wheels throughout Europe and eOne will hold global rights for all remaining territories and worldwide distribution rights covering DVD/Blu-ray, VOD and digital. Hell on Wheels is shot on location in Alberta, Canada.

Mandy Patinkin will next star in Showtime’s one-hour drama pilot Homeland opposite Claire Danes. Patinkin will portray Saul, a veteran CIA Division Chief who is Carrie’s (Danes) boss and mentor. Homeland commences production in January and additional casting will be announced soon. FOX 21 is producing the pilot which is inspired by Gideon Raff’s Israeli television series Prisoners of War. Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa are executive producing the pilot.

Marc Cherry, showrunner on ABC’s Desperate Housewives, is developing a new drama for ABC titled Hallelujah. The plot is set in the small town of Hallelujah, Tennessee that is torn apart by forces of good and evil. Things are put to right when a stranger moves to town bringing justice, peace and faith to the residents. Cherry will write and executive produce the project and Sabrina Wind will also serve as an executive producer. ABC Studios will produce where Cherry already has a large overall deal.

A&E Network is setting up additional one-hour scripted dramas by ordering cast-contingent pilots for Big Mike and Longmire, notes Variety. Big Mike, from Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison production company and Sony Pictures Television, is about a plus-sized detective in the San Diego Police Department. Ed Decter and John Strauss are penning the script and will executive produce with Doug Robinson. Longmire, from Warner Horizon Television centers on a sheriff in Wyoming. Greer Shephard and Mike Robin, both EPs on TNT’s The Closer, will executive produce Longmire along with The Closer writers Hunt Baldwin and John Coveny.

Animal Planet commissioned a new miniseries from Darlow Smithson Productions titled Infested! revealing real-life, true stories of people whose homes are plagued by bizarre infestations from scorpions, spiders, bedbugs, rats and other creepy creatures. The three-part miniseries debuts January 9 with back-to-back episodes.

Syfy Ventures and Universal Pictures are teaming to form Syfy Films, a newly-minted film company which will develop and produce Syfy-branded theatrical motion pictures distributed by Universal. The new entity will focus on films in the sci-fi, fantasy, supernatural and horror genres. Starting 2012, Syfy Films will distribute up to two films per year via Universal Pictures. Donna Langley, Co-Chairman, Universal Pictures and Mark Stern, EVP/Original Programming, Syfy will jointly manage the new entity.

Tuesday  A18-49 Analysis:  NBC was at the top of the pack Tuesday night delivering a 3.4/10 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. CBS opened the night a winner with NCIS at 4.0/12 with NBC’s Minute To Win It next at 2.3/7. Then at 9p through the 10p hour, NBC’s season finale of The Biggest Loser was #1 with a 3.8/10 at 9p followed by CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles at 3.3/9. Then at 10p, NBC posted a top-rated 4.1/12 for the second hour of The Biggest Loser’s season conclusion with CBS in second place again, this time for The Good Wife at 2.2/6.

Bravo Media elevated Andy Cohen to EVP/Original Programming and Development where he will continue to supervise the network’s current development and production projects emanating from the East and West Coast departments. Based in New York, Andy will also continue to report to Frances Berwick, President, Bravo Media.

Effective immediately, HISTORY promoted three of its executive producers, Michael Stiller, Mary Donahue and Julian Hobbs all to the position of VPs/Development and Programming. Michael has recently been the EP of HISTORY’s series Ax Men and is presently the EP of the new series, Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy due to premiere in early 2011. Mary currently is the EP for the series Pawn Stars and also develops and manages specials and other series for the network. Julian has served as EP on the network’s 12-hour event America The Story of Us and other specials and is also the EP on the series IRT: Deadliest Roads. All three supervise their respective programming teams for HISTORY and are responsible for creating and executing new programming strategies to spur the HISTORY brand and growth across all content areas. Each also reports to David McKillop, SVP/Development and Programming, HISTORY.

Food Network and Cooking Channel announced a reorganization within the creative, marketing and communications teams and in doing so has appointed Irika Slavin as VP/Communications and Public Relations. Irika will oversee both networks as a communications strategist for programming and talent in addition to being a key player in the expansion of the brands in the areas of new business, digital and pro-social. Furthermore, the restructuring nets several internal promotions including upping Sharon de Gier to VP/Partnerships and Talent Management; Karen Goodwin to VP/Creative; Katie Ilch becomes VP of On/Off-Air Media Planning and Strategy; and Amanda Melnick rises to VP/New Business and Integrated Marketing.

Peter Furnish joins Canada’s Astral Television Networks as VP/Marketing, effective immediately. Peter will spearhead the media company’s marketing, interactive, consumer care and research units and will further be in charge of developing multi-platform marketing campaigns and initiatives targeting consumers of The Movie Network, HBO Canada, Mpix, Family Channel and Playhouse Disney. Peter will report to Domenic Vivolo, SVP/Marketing and Sales, Astral Television Networks.

This day in History:   2001 – It was announced that Siena Heights University would begin offering a class called “Animated Philosophy and Religion.” The two-credit class would cover how religion and philosophy are part of popular culture and is based on the television series “The Simpsons.”
