The NFL and CBS forged a new deal encompassing a nine-year broadcast rights agreement through the 2022 season allowing CBS Sports to remain as the broadcast home of the NFL’s American Football Conference (AFC).  Furthermore, the NFL’s increased “flexible scheduling” will allow CBS to broadcast games from the National Football Conference (NFC), marking the first time CBS will broadcast both AFC and NFC games in the same season.  CBS additionally gained the broadcast rights to four future Super Bowl events including Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans in 2013, Super Bowl L in 2016, Super Bowl LIII in 2019 and Super Bowl LVI in 2022.  This deal also has the distinction of being the longest pact made between the NFL and its broadcast partners.

When NBC’s thirteenth season of The Biggest Loser makes a comeback on January 3 with a two-hour premiere at 8p, the participants arriving at the ranch will be in teams of two.  Teams comprised of mother/daughter, father/son, brother/sister and husband/wife will arrive together though will be matched up with other participants and competing with the person they came with.  Each contestant will share the same goal, to lose weight and get healthy and perhaps win the $250,000 grand prize.  The Biggest Loser is from Reveille, 25/7 Productions and 3 Ball Productions.

During the first week of January, Velocity kicks off three world-premiere series:

  • Autoweek’s Vinsetta Garage hosted by Courtney Hansen covers everything from car design, customization and more in each half-hour episode.  From Autoweek Media Group for Velocity. Debuts January 3 at 830p.
  • Shooting Stars follows eight trick shooters and celebrity shotgunners as they shoot off modern weapons amidst a big event entertainment atmosphere in Texas.  Produced by Orion Media for Velocity. Premieres January 7 at 8p.
  • Saw Dogs watches as a team of chainsaw sculptors battle a deadline to finish a commissioned series of wood carvings.  Produced by Buck Productions for Velocity. Premieres January 7 at 9p.

The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) ordered two more seasons of Coast Guard Alaska.  Produced by Al Roker Entertainment, the series follows a team of Coast Guard swimmers and rescue pilots working in Kodiak, AK as they train to save lives while coping with harsh weather conditions.  Season two was given five one-hour episodes slated to premiere in April 2012 while season three will bump to eight one-hour episodes set for October 2012.  For the frosh season of Coast Guard Alaska there are two remaining original episodes left to air on January 11 and January 18 at 9p.
