Good Morning, it’s Thursday, December 14, 2006 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Peter Boyle, who portrayed the often cranky father in the CBS comedy Everybody Loves Raymond, died Tuesday in New York after suffering from multiple myeloma and heart disease. He was 71 years old. Boyle also starred in several notable movies including Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein and the 1970 cult film Joe. Even though he was nominated eight times for an Emmy Award for his role in Raymond, Boyle was the only cast member who never won. In 1996 he did win an Emmy for a guest-star appearance on The X Files. Other notable appearances include his role in Taxi Driver as cab driver Wizard, Monster’s Ball, all three The Santa Clause movies, and as the delightful future father-in-law in While You Were Sleeping. Boyle appeared in two other films schedule to be released over the next 18 months – Shadows of Atticus and Chatham. He began his career studying under Uta Hagen in NYC, and later moved to join the Second City comedy improv troupe in Chicago.

MTV is mixing things up with a new primetime programming strategy that will theme similar shows in blocks in the MTV 10 Spot on Mondays and Tuesdays, expanding the 10 Spot by an hour to 9p-11p, and move around returning shows into new time periods. Here’s the rundown:
- Sundays 10-11p: I’m from Rolling Stone launches at 10p on January 7
- Mondays 9-11p: Coming of Age shows including My Super Sweet 16, The Hills, and two new series – DanceLife (debuts Jan 15) and Engaged & Underage (debuts Jan 22).
- Tuesdays 9-11p: Adventure shows including Road Rules, Two-A-Days and two new shows – Bam’s Holy Union and Wrestling Society X, both reality shows launching in January (more info on these two below under Production & Development).
- Wednesdays 10-11p: Real World hangs tough on Wednesdays at 10, with twentyfourseven airing at 1030p. Beginning January 31st, new series Adventures in Hollywood moves into the 1030p time slot.
- Thursdays 10-11p: Juvies goes Thursdays at 10p as of February 8
- Friday and Saturday nights are reserved for repeats of various primetime and daytime series.
Checking through the primetime schedules during the upcoming week, we find Help Me Help You needed more help than ABC could give it, and the result is the show has been pulled from next Tuesday’s night lineup. Next week, ABC will air back to back episodes of Big Day from 9-10p, which hasn’t exactly been a big boon for the network either, but perhaps worth a shot double booking. As for the Danson sitcom, there is no official word the show has been cancelled, but there’s no word when it will be back either.
Gospel Music Channel (GMC) will institute a new programming strategy for Saturday nights starting January 6 called World Premiere Saturday Nights. Each Saturday night will feature world premieres of specials, new episodes of GMC series and music videos.
Family Room HD, one of the VOOM HD Networks and available on DISH Network, will premiere two new series next month focused on family entertainment:
- Totally Frank – acquired from Britain’s Channel 4 International the 13-episode half-hour drama centers on four girls as they launch their musical careers by starting a band.
- Maddigan’s Quest – 13-episode half-hour series aimed at tweens about a post-apocalyptic world and Maddigan’s Circus who secretly aims to save the city of Solis. Produced in New Zealand by South Pacific Pictures and acquired by ALL3MEDIA International.
DIY Network will offer a programming umbrella to help its viewers get and stay organized in the New Year during 10 Days of Organizing Ways beginning January 24 through February 2. In addition, the network’s newest series, Wasted Spaces will launch during those ten days, set to debut on January 24 at 9p with will be four back-to-back episodes.
E! is hanging around the Beverly Hills zip code 90210 for another new series High Maintenance 90210, which will highlight the domestic staffers who work in the mansions of the mega-wealthy elite. The half-hour reality series, produced by Prometheus Entertainment in association with The Bubble Factory, will premiere January 1 at 11p.
The FCC this week put a kibosh on Third Coast Press’ petition to halt license renewals of all 18 television stations in the Chicago market. The FCC said the progressive-skewed newspaper didn’t prove its allegation that the stations have been “systematically negligent” in offering public affairs programs and children’s programming. Third Coast Press further charged the stations with “hypercommercialism” and stated they all focused too much on crime and celebrities during newscasts rather than offering information that would promote debate on current issues.
Vin Di Bona is working on a one-hour comedy pilot for NBC called Comedy Colosseum. Competing for $10,000, comedians will perform in an arena, Roman-style, and winners will be decided by how much the audience laughs. Hosts are former SNL star Dean Edwards and Olivia Lee from Great Britain.
MTV has announced two new reality series will become part of their new Tuesday night lineup in January. Bam’s Unholy Union, from Sonar Entertainment, focuses on professional skateboarder Margera who is getting ready for his big day – his wedding. Wrestling Society X from Big Vision Entertainment is described as the “greatest, dirtiest and most dangerous sports entertainment program that throws out the glam of wrestling.” Both shows debut on January 30th and 930p and 1030p, respectively.
Game shows continue, and kids games shows are the new frontier. The newest project entering the field is ordered by Fox – Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? from Mark Burnett and Mike Darnell. The idea is simple, ask adults questions straight out of elementary school text books – 1st grade thru 5th grade. According to Variety, the adults are competing for cash, and can use young students as their lifelines. Fox has fast-tracked the game show and it could show up on the air as quickly as early first quarter 2007.
Correction : The TNT pilot project Grace is from Fox Television Studios. This was incorrectly attributed in yesterday’s edition.
Telemundo has named Carlos R. Bardasano as EVP/Network Entertainment, effective immediately. Carlos will spearhead programming, on-air promotions and specials in addition to the network’s education program, Taller Telemundo. He will also oversee all programming strategy and on-air content and will report to Don Browne, President.
Kevin Lahr has joined Concrete Pictures as Producer, reporting direct to Miles Dinsmoor, SVP/Production and based in the Philadelphia office. Kevin will manage new projects, maintain client relationships, lead project team members and vendors as well as oversee project budgets.
Access 360 Media, the young adult consumer-focused entertainment network, has added three new executives: Lauren de la Fuente as SVP/Strategic Partnerships and Marketing to create content for young adults via media partnerships and to oversee the positioning of the company; Jeff Elgart as SVP/Advertising Sales to develop revenue strategies across all platforms; and Christopher M. Goumas as VP/Retail Development to increase the company’s partner and retail strategies.
Sonia Ormaechea has been appointed Sales Director of Ellis Entertainment where she will manage territories including The Americas and Australasia.
