Thursday, August 4th, 2005

Good morning.  It’s Thursday, August 4, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. Remember, if you’d rather listen than read, you can sign up for the Cynopsis: In Your Ear podcast available for download each morning by 630a.

Two years ago, ABC ditched the National Association of Broadcasters when they agreed to disagree over the FCC rules concerning local TV station ownership caps.  ABC was not alone is its departure, it was just the last of the Big Four broadcast networks to leave the association over the same issue.  And now ABC is the first to return.  This statement released yesterday by ABC: “ABC believes that the best interests of our industry, our company and ultimately the viewing public can be promoted by returning to the NAB at this time. With policy differences now behind us, ABC and NAB are once again in a position to work together towards our important common goals,” said Preston Padden, EVP/Worldwide Government Relations, The Walt Disney Company.  NBC and CBS have not commented, and Fox says it has no plans to rejoin.

Series Premiere:
FX:  Starved at 10p
FX:  It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia at 1030p

Series Finale:
VH1:  Kept at 9p

Howard Stern has entered into an agreement with iN Demand Networks, to provide Stern’s Sirius Satellite Radio Show on a subscription VOD format. The show will likely launch on iN Demand later on this year.  The deal also calls for iN Demand to have access to Stern’s current terrestrial radio show  – those shows were last carried on E! until the end of June.

The music is over, and David Chappelle has called it a day.  That’s the news according to Charlie Murphy, one of the comics on the Comedy Central show.  You’ll recall Chappelle left his series just a day before Season Three launched and headed to South Africa, reportedly for a “spiritual retreat.”  Since then, there’s been a question mark whether Chappelle would return to finish the season and continue his show.  While the last communication between Comedy Central and Chappelle was on June 3, there has been no  indication Chappelle will return, tho the network maintains the door is always open.

ABC will launch My Kind of Town (Embassy Row/Monkey) on August 14 at 9p.  The limited series (just six eps) replaces Desperate Housewives for a few weeks until D.H.’s fall launch on September 25.  The Michael Davies show is hosted by Johnny Vaughan, and is described as a comedy/variety hybrid. Each week, 200 people from one small town come to ABC’s NY studios where some will participate in individualized games and gags for prizes tailored to their own lives, interests and needs. The show is designed to be an emotional wish fulfillment with unexpected twists.

Today VOD service Mag Rag launches its new series Mama Gena’s School of Womanly Arts.  Mama Gena is also known as Regena Thomashauer, who actually does run a school out of her NYC brownstone for the upper crust about “relationships and personal pleasure.” Mag Rack will offer 20 original episodes between launch and December, all designed to teach a little something something about flirting, dating and other ‘womanly arts.’

The Season #2 finale of WE: Women’s Entertainment‘s series Bridezillas last Sunday night earned a 0.7 HH rtg, marking a 69% increase from the show’s season premiere back in June (0.4 HH Rtg), and an increase of 195% over the finale of season #1. Of course, Season #1 didn’t have a glut of decked out brides who all checked their pride at the door and shamelessly dove into a giant wedding cake in Times Square looking for a diamond ring.  As they say, promotion is everything.

Dr. Phil has re-upped with King World Productions and CBS thru the 2013-2014 season. With that also comes the announcement from King World that the show has been renewed on 15 Viacom-owned stations thru the 2010-2011 season (what? no commitment thru 2014?  sheesh). Perhaps more interesting is that, of these 15 stations, seven have never aired the show. Two will get it this fall (KCBS and WBBM), and five get it for the first time next fall (WWJ, KMAX, KDKA, WJZ, and WGNT).

E! has picked up a movie package from Sony Pictures Television.  This marks the first acquisition of this type for the cable net.  The short list of films includes Mystic Pizza, Fargo and Suddenly Seeking Susan, according to Broadcasting & Cable.  The first film to air will be Fargo in September.  Each title will air several times within a short window, and E! will delve into its library of interstitial and celebrity information to provided a viewer-added components during the play of each film.

TV One‘s new series Quiet on the Set debuts on August 15 at 8p, with host Mary Major.  The first guest on this series of special interviews will be writer/director/producer John Singleton, who will discuss his full body of work, ranging from Boyz N The Hood to his Sundance Film Festival winner Hustle & Flow.

No doubt you’ll hear the news today that Martha Stewart‘s home confinement term has been extended beyond August 10th by three weeks.  No one is talking about why her ankle jewelry will stay put for an additional 21 days, but what they are saying is it will in no way effect the launch of any of her fall projects.  Phew.

By the by …. On its ninth day in space, the crew on The Space Shuttle Discovery astronauts began their day by waking up at 10:09p CDT to the music “Where My Heart Will Take Me.” The theme song from Star Trek: Enterprise was a surprise dedication to the crew from the Deputy Shuttle Program Manager Wayne Hale.

  • Notorious (NBC Universal): Starring Tori Spelling, this scripted comedy revolves around the life of a young Hollywood celebrity going about her life, and attempting to live “normally” despite her notoriety.  Originally created by NBC Universal for NBC, this show will be exec prod by Spelling.
  • Hogan Knows Best has been ordered for a second season with 12 new eps.

  • Modern Men (Warner Bros. TV):  Jane Seymour will play the female lead in this comedy series from Jerry Bruckheimer.  Seymour replaces Wendie Malick who played the role of the Life Coach in the pilot, and had to leave this project once ABC reupped Jake in Progress.  Modern Men is set for a midseason launch.

  • NUMB3RS (Scott Free Prods/Paramount Network TV):  With the departure of Sabrina Lloyd from the regular cast, CBS has signed Diane Farr to replace her as Special Agent Megan Reeves.  At this point, she is a recurring character, tho that is expected to be upped to regular character opposite Rob Morrow, per Variety.  In moving to this show, Farr will finish up her one year deal with the series Rescue Me on FX.

  • Joey:  Joey is adding a new character to the lineup. Zack is an aspiring actor around the same age as Joey.  Zack thinks he’s going to be a great star some day; he also thinks Joey is a great and talented actor.  Working together, Zack and Joey think they can soar to the big time.  Probably not. The role of Zack has not yet been cast.

Casting Note #1: Thinking about getting married?  Thinking about getting married in the next couple of months?  Then Style Network wants to hear from you.  Couple of restrictions – you must be using a wedding planner and be located in the New England/East Coast region.  Interested?  Email:

Casting Note #2:  Okay, maybe a wedding is the furthest thing from your mind.  Thinking about divorce?  This upcoming BBC series for TLC provides seven days of intensive divorce therapy to save your marriage.  Again, they’re looking for couples this time around in the New England/tri-state area.  You can apply online at:

Court TV has upped Emily Barsh to SVP/News & Talent Development. Emily will supervise the production of Catherine Crier Live, Hollywood Heat, and live news talk shows that air both during the day and in primetime. She will be responsible for the development of new formats and creative features to integrate into the news product, as well as the cultivation of new on-air talent for Court TV Networks. The network has also announced the addition of two new executives to its Marketing department: Joseph Alesi as VP/Off-Air Creative and Courtney Brown as Director/Ad Sales Marketing. Joe’s responsibilities will include developing the networks strategic off-air creative vision as well as implementing creative, brand defining off-air advertising campaigns to both the consumer and trade communities. In her role, Courtney will be responsible for creatively strategizing and executing on- and off-air initiatives that support ad sales marketing goals. She will also manage day-to-day operations of trade advertising strategy and create consumer promotion tie-ins related to ad sales marketing initiatives.
Louis J. Briskman has been named EVP/General Counsel, CBS.  Briskman will oversee all legal activities for CBS, UPN, the Viacom TV Stations Group, Paramount TV, King World, Infinity Broadcasting, Viacom Outdoor, Simon & Schuster, Showtime and Paramount Parks.  The current General Counsels of each of those divisions will remain in place and work with Briskman, who in turn will work with the Viacom Law Dept.  Still with me? Okay, when these business entities and their subsidiaries become a separate company, following the Viacom split, Briskman will become Chief Legal Officer of that new entity, which will be called CBS Corporation. He will report directly to Leslie Moonves, Chairman/CBS & Co-Pres/Co-COO, Viacom.  Most recently Briskman was SVP/General Counsel, Aetna Inc.  He previously served as General Counsel, CBS Corporation prior to its merger with Viacom, Inc.
Jason Burns has been hired as VP/Development for Alta Loma Entertainment, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Playboy Enterprises, Inc.  He will report to Ned Nalle, President/Playboy Entertainment Group, while liaising closely with Playboy Enterprises’ EVP Richard S. Rosenzweig, Chairman and CEO/Alta Loma Entertainment. Jason’s primary focus will be the development of mainstream feature film and television opportunities, building on Alta Loma’s recent success with the highly anticipated “The Girls Next Door,” scheduled for an August 7 premiere on E! Entertainment, “Party at the Palms,” currently airing on E!, and FOX’s 2002 reality show “Girl Next Door: The Search For a Playboy Centerfold.”

Univision Communications Inc. has named Jose Luis Padilla as GM/Univision Television Group’s Arizona stations.  He will be responsible for Phoenix’s KTVW and KFPH, Flagstaff’s KTVW and KFPH, Tucson’s KUVE, KUVE and KFTU and Douglas’ KFTU.  Jose was previously the General Sales Manager of Univision and TeleFutura’s Arizona stations. He will be based in Phoenix and report to Michael D. Wortsman and Thomas Arnost, Co-Presidents of Univision Television Group.

Tuesday — A18-49 Analysis:    CBS led the charge on Tuesday night in the A18-49 category, according to Nielsen Media Research fast affiliate numbers.  CBS earned a 3.0/9, followed by Fox 2.4/7, ABC 2.1/6, NBC 1.8/5, UPN 1.0/3, WB .9/3.  CBS won every hour of prime, 8p thru 11p.  A repeat of NCIS delivered a 2.4/8; an original Big Brother earned a 3.7/10; and an original Rock Star INXS earned a 2.8/8.  Other programs of note on Tuesday night – NBC’s debut of its newest reality series Meet Mister Mom failed to attract much attention as evidenced by its 1.6/5.  A repeat of House on Fox at 9p was second only to CBS with a 2.6/7.  And ABC’s CMA Music Festival earned a 2.4/7 from 9-11p.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1944-After receiving a tip from a Dutch informant, the Nazi Gestapo captured 15 year old Jewish diarist Anne Frank and her family in a sealed-off area of an Amsterdam warehouse.  Anne’s diary survived the war, but she perished in one of the Nazi death camps.
