CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 4, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. Remember, if you’d rather listen than read, you can sign up for the Cynopsis: In Your Ear podcast available for download each morning by 630a. Two years ago, ABC ditched the National Association of Broadcasters when they agreed to disagree over the FCC rules concerning local TV station ownership caps. ABC was not alone is its departure, it was just the last of the Big Four broadcast networks to leave the association over the same issue. And now ABC is the first to return. This statement released yesterday by ABC: “ABC believes that the best interests of our industry, our company and ultimately the viewing public can be promoted by returning to the NAB at this time. With policy differences now behind us, ABC and NAB are once again in a position to work together towards our important common goals,” said Preston Padden, EVP/Worldwide Government Relations, The Walt Disney Company. NBC and CBS have not commented, and Fox says it has no plans to rejoin. Series Premiere: Series Finale: * MORE GOOD STUFF *
Howard Stern has entered into an agreement with iN Demand Networks, to provide Stern’s Sirius Satellite Radio Show on a subscription VOD format. The show will likely launch on iN Demand later on this year. The deal also calls for iN Demand to have access to Stern’s current terrestrial radio show – those shows were last carried on E! until the end of June. The music is over, and David Chappelle has called it a day. That’s the news according to Charlie Murphy, one of the comics on the Comedy Central show. You’ll recall Chappelle left his series just a day before Season Three launched and headed to South Africa, reportedly for a “spiritual retreat.” Since then, there’s been a question mark whether Chappelle would return to finish the season and continue his show. While the last communication between Comedy Central and Chappelle was on June 3, there has been no indication Chappelle will return, tho the network maintains the door is always open. ABC will launch My Kind of Town (Embassy Row/Monkey) on August 14 at 9p. The limited series (just six eps) replaces Desperate Housewives for a few weeks until D.H.’s fall launch on September 25. The Michael Davies show is hosted by Johnny Vaughan, and is described as a comedy/variety hybrid. Each week, 200 people from one small town come to ABC’s NY studios where some will participate in individualized games and gags for prizes tailored to their own lives, interests and needs. The show is designed to be an emotional wish fulfillment with unexpected twists. Today VOD service Mag Rag launches its new series Mama Gena’s School of Womanly Arts. Mama Gena is also known as Regena Thomashauer, who actually does run a school out of her NYC brownstone for the upper crust about “relationships and personal pleasure.” Mag Rack will offer 20 original episodes between launch and December, all designed to teach a little something something about flirting, dating and other ‘womanly arts.’ The Season #2 finale of WE: Women’s Entertainment‘s series Bridezillas last Sunday night earned a 0.7 HH rtg, marking a 69% increase from the show’s season premiere back in June (0.4 HH Rtg), and an increase of 195% over the finale of season #1. Of course, Season #1 didn’t have a glut of decked out brides who all checked their pride at the door and shamelessly dove into a giant wedding cake in Times Square looking for a diamond ring. As they say, promotion is everything. Dr. Phil has re-upped with King World Productions and CBS thru the 2013-2014 season. With that also comes the announcement from King World that the show has been renewed on 15 Viacom-owned stations thru the 2010-2011 season (what? no commitment thru 2014? sheesh). Perhaps more interesting is that, of these 15 stations, seven have never aired the show. Two will get it this fall (KCBS and WBBM), and five get it for the first time next fall (WWJ, KMAX, KDKA, WJZ, and WGNT). E! has picked up a movie package from Sony Pictures Television. This marks the first acquisition of this type for the cable net. The short list of films includes Mystic Pizza, Fargo and Suddenly Seeking Susan, according to Broadcasting & Cable. The first film to air will be Fargo in September. Each title will air several times within a short window, and E! will delve into its library of interstitial and celebrity information to provided a viewer-added components during the play of each film. TV One‘s new series Quiet on the Set debuts on August 15 at 8p, with host Mary Major. The first guest on this series of special interviews will be writer/director/producer John Singleton, who will discuss his full body of work, ranging from Boyz N The Hood to his Sundance Film Festival winner Hustle & Flow. No doubt you’ll hear the news today that Martha Stewart‘s home confinement term has been extended beyond August 10th by three weeks. No one is talking about why her ankle jewelry will stay put for an additional 21 days, but what they are saying is it will in no way effect the launch of any of her fall projects. Phew. By the by …. On its ninth day in space, the crew on The Space Shuttle Discovery astronauts began their day by waking up at 10:09p CDT to the music “Where My Heart Will Take Me.” The theme song from Star Trek: Enterprise was a surprise dedication to the crew from the Deputy Shuttle Program Manager Wayne Hale. * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *
