Cynopsis: Kids!

08/03/06

Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 3, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

MTV Network’s college network, mtvU, has inked a deal to acquire Y2M: Youth Media & Marketing Networks, parent company of College Publisher, which operates an interactive network of 450 online US college newspapers.  The deal will provide MTVN and its national advertisers with the opportunity to connect with the college market through Y2M, giving them access to upwards of five million college students with a subscriber base of 2.1 million.  mtvU broadcasts to 750 US colleges, a combined enrollment of 7 million students.  The deal is in keeping with MTVN’s current strategy of expanding its digital reach through multiple platforms and devices and comes on the tails of MTVN’s purchase of Neopets, iFilm, Xfire and GameTrailers.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

PorchLight Entertainment has teamed-up with Chicago-based Eat Your Lunch to develop Freaky Frankenbike Patrol, a 2D animated comedy/action series targeting Kids 6-11. Under the agreement, PorchLight will have worldwide broadcast, home video, and licensing and merchandising rights to the series.  Freaky Frankenbike Patrol follows the misadventures of three middle-school boys who create their own wild bicycles that they use to ride out of their boring suburban life and into all kinds of trouble. The series will be produced at PorchLight’s Animation Studios in LA.

Actress Helena Bonham Carter (The Wings of the Dove, Wallace & Gromit in the Curse of the Were Rabbit, Corpse Bride) has joined the cast of Warner Bros’. fifth movie adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.  Bonham Carter has signed on to play Bellatrix Lestrange – for the uninformed, she is Sirius Black’s cousin and a Death Eater, who is also a follower of Lord Voldemort’s, the one whose name shall not be said.  To that end, Bonham Carter is one of handful newcomers to the Harry Potter cast.  Also joining the cast of HP5 are Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge; George Harris as Kingsley Shacklebolt; Natalia Tena will play Nymphadora Tonks; Kathryn Hunter in the role of Mrs. Figg; and 14-year-old actress Evanna Lynch, who will portray Luna Lovegood.  Additionally, composer Nicholas Hooper is creating the score for the movie.

Elsewhere, New Line’s movie adaptation of The Golden Compass has a new cast member in Eva Green (next appearing in the upcoming Casino Royale).  Green has been cast in the role of the witch queen, Serafina Pekula, who provides young Lyra with information about the fate of the universe.  Based on the first book in author Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy, New Line has slated The Golden Compass for a November 16, 2007 release.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network will kick off the new school year by introducing the first annual National Recess Week, this September 18-22, in partnership with the National Parent Teacher Association, the National Education Association, Hands on Network and the National Association for Sport & Physical Education.  As part of the network’s Rescuing Recess campaign, National Recess Week will include special events at schools nationwide in and effort to underline the importance of recess for kids and encourage schools to support the return of recess as part of each school day.  Launched this March 2006, the Rescuing Recess campaign is part of Cartoon Network’s overall Get Animated initiative that aims to get kids active, involved and leading healthy lives.  Beginning with an event in NYC on September 18, the week will conclude on Cartoon Network with a new episode of its series Codename: Kids Next Door, titled Operation R.E.C.E.S.S.  Additional information and materials can be found at www.RescuingRecess.com.

Clarification: KOL’s Secret Slumber Party on CBS will air Saturday mornings 7-9a and 11a-12n on many affiliates, however, the schedule day and time may differ from market-to-market.  But, of course, you knew that.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Warner Bros. Consumer Products has been tapped by four European soccer clubs to serve as their Master Licensee in the US, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Brazil and the rest of South America.  Under the deal soccer clubs FC Barcelona, Juventus FC, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain have granted WBCP the rights to license, manufacture, distribute, promote and sell club-branded merchandise.  Product categories will include leisure apparel and accessories, toys and games, house wares, stationery, gifts and collectibles.  WBCP other soccer related representation includes 2006 FIFA World Cup, the UEFA Euro 2008, the Mexico National Team and A.C. Milan, among others.

STONE SOUP

Eight hours a day for four straight days, 400 new words, and 28 games.  Who will win?  Probably a very good speller.  The 2006 US Scrabble Open (f/k/a the National Scrabble Championship) will take place August 4-9, at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa.  Organized by the National Scrabble Association and its Executive Director John D. Williams Jr., and sponsored by Hasbro, more than 600 of the world’s best Scrabble players are expected to take part in the 2006 US Scrabble Open, with the top two playing a best-of-five match, which will air on ESPN later this year.  The players range in age from 13 years old to 91 and they come from all over.  Hey John, you know if we played by my rules I just might have a chance.

Casting:  Show of Force, a production company, in association with Earthwatch Institute, is looking to cast three US students ages 16-18 years, to take part in EcoTeam, an environmental/ecological expedition that will be featured online and produced as a TV series.  The EcoTeam will travel around the world visiting rain forests, deserts, glaciers, and coral reefs to investigate and learning about environmental issues from scientists at the Earthwatch Institute and Scripps Institution of Oceanography.  Adventurous high school kids, who can afford to take off the second semester of the 2006-07 school year, can apply at http://www.earthwatch.org/ecoteam/. Applications will be accepted through September 15, 2006.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Brian McHale has joined Starz Entertainment Group LLC as VP/Information Technology.  He will be responsible for areas of IT including software development, database administration, service delivery and operations.  Based at the company’s Englewood, Colorado office, McHale will report to Bill Myers, EVP/Finance and CFO.  Prior to this McHale was VP/Global Operations, Discovery Communications.

David A.
