Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 29, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association found its future chief. The organization named Olympian Tiger Shaw as COO, starting Oct. 1. He will succeed Bill Marolt, who previously announced his intention to retire after leading the USSA for 18 years but will remain president and CEO through the Sochi Olympic Winter Games. Shaw competed as part of the U.S. Olympic Team in the 1984 Olympic Winter Games under then Head Alpine Coach Bill Marolt, and is a two-time Olympian, a nine-time U.S. Champion and was most recently was Senior Director, Response Services at Global Rescue LLC.

On the Air

Keith Olbermann’s return to the ESPN camp on Monday saw 319,000 viewers tune in to the premiere of his new series Olbermann. That is a decent uptick over last year’s average on ESPN2 in the time period of around 240,000 viewers. Olbermann also drew a 0.2 Nielsen score among adults 18-49 and 25-54.

Sports talk personality Chris “Mad Dog” Russo locked in a pair of deals including a new three-year contract with SiriusXM to extend his term hosting a daily all-sports radio show. Russo’s on-air role will now be expanded to include a significant presence on the MLB Network Radio channel on SiriusXM. In addition, MLB Network announced that Russo will join its roster of on-air talent to host a new weekday baseball show launching next spring, in addition to appearing across its studio programming. The show will be produced by MLB Network and simulcast on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM.

FOX Sports kicks off this season’s college football action tonight with a special one-hour edition of FOX College Thursday at 7p, followed by its first Thursday Night Game of the Week pitting Utah State/Utah at 8p on FOX Sports 1. Pregame will be hosted by Erin Andrews with analysts Joel Klatt, Eddie George, Mike Pereira and Clay Travis. Justin Kutcher, Petros Papadakis and sideline reporter Kristina Pink call the action from Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.

Meanwhile, CBS Sports Network launches the football season tonight at 11p with USC/Hawaii at Aloha Stadium in Aiea, Hawaii. Andrew Catalon and analyst Aaron Taylor call the action, with Lauren Gardner reporting from the sidelines. Inside College Football will run starting at 10p with Adam Zucker hosting, along with analysts Brian Jones, Randy Cross and Houston Nutt.

NASCAR released a statement yesterday playing down a report that NASCAR might trigger its deal with NBC and FOX a year early. “Despite recent reports to the contrary, nothing substantive has been presented to NASCAR regarding broadcast partners’ plans to alter our TV agreement in 2014,” said NASCAR Vice President Of Broadcasting And Production Steve Herbst. “We’re very happy with our current broadcast partners and fully expect and are excited to be back with FOX, Turner and ESPN next year. These types of discussions happen regularly across the sports television landscape, very rarely resulting in changes to a media rights agreement.”

On the boxing front, ESPN reports that HBO locked in deal for the American rights to broadcast the scheduled 12-round fight between heavyweight contender Tyson Fury and David Haye, which takes place on Sept. 28 in Manchester, England, as part of a tripleheader from three different countries. The other fights will come from Montreal with Adonis Stevenson/Tavoris Cloud and Carson, CA pitting Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. against Brian Vera.

International boxing rights distributor Octapixx LIVE announced that its August 31 Triple Thunder card with Ilunga Makabu facing Eric Fields. In the US, beIN Sport will carry the card.

ESPN revealed that its 2013-14 Big Ten Conference men’s college basketball regular-season schedule will see 37 conference games will be televised across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. The lineup includes top Big Ten games as part of ESPN’s weekly Super Tuesday doubleheader with the Southeastern Conference. ESPN will also continue to showcase the Big Ten on Thursdays and Saturdays throughout the season. Highlights include Michigan/Michigan State in a Saturday Primetime Presented by DIRECTV telecast on January 25. Big Ten telecasts were ESPN’s most-viewed conference last season, averaging 1,852,000 viewers.

Bloomberg’s Sportfolio returns tonight for its fall season with a look at the business strategy and operation of the 95th PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club. The episode launching in the show’s new slot, Thursday nights at 9:30p and 12:30a on Friday.

Sponsorship & Promotion

Lenovo is activating its sponsorship of the NFL with a promotion that will let a fan play real-life coach, joining the 2014 Pro Bowl Alumni Captains Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice another NFL.com fantasy football champion to help select one of the two teams playing in the 2014 game. Lenovo’s Fantasy Coach of the Year will be announced following the regular season and will be flown to Hawaii to be a part of the team to help choose a Pro Bowl squad and to then see them in action during the 2014 Pro Bowl on Sunday, January 26. The winner will be determined using an algorithm combining win-loss percentages, league championships, a difficulty-of-league index and a “quality moves” indicator  taking into account sit/start point differential.

Meanwhile, ESPN Digital Media accounted for 28% of all sports category usage across digital platforms in July, according to the company. Overall, ESPN digital properties drew 46.8 million unique visitors, logging 4.3 billion minutes of usage and 558.3 million visits.
