Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 29, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Tonight’s Finales:
ABC: Motive at 8p
Discovery Fit & Health: Pregnant Behind Bars at 10p
NBC: Hollywood Game Night at 10p
ID: Fatal Encounters at 9p, Behind Mansion Walls at 10p
We TV: Sanya’s Glam & Gold
More and more people are consuming TV, if not everywhere, then in a lot more places – and many are doing it a la carte. A new report from Ericsson ConsumerLab found that 72 percent of people surveyed said they used mobile devices to watch video at least weekly, and 42 percent do so outside the home. Over half of the respondents used their computer and Internet connection to mix and match what they wanted to watch, and when. “The quest has begun to become the first easy to use, a la carte TV solution provider that aggregates consumer and video needs,” said Ericsson senior researcher Anders Erlandsson, who added traditional viewing isn’t disappearing anytime soon. “Linear TV still has an important role for consumers,” said Erlandsson. “We don’t see any decline in frequency of usage… as many as 36 percent of respondents feel that watching live sports is a very important part of their TV habits.” Study was conducted in fifteen countries, with 15,000 online interviews.
With sales of e-cigarettes skyrocketing numbers hit $500 million in 2012, projected to more than double by the end of 2013 Reynolds American has unveiled an ad for its new e-cig, Vuse, that will start airing in Colorado next month. It will be the company’s first foray into TV in decades – cigarette ads were banned in 1970, followed by smokeless tobacco in 1986 – and different in tone from the spots for Lorillard‘s smokeless, electronic Blu eCigs featuring actor Stephen Dorff. The commercial for Vuse focuses on the technology of the product. “It’s about innovation,” Reynolds spokesman David Howard told AdAge. “The product is the celebrity.”
CSI: Crime Scene’s Gearge Eads will be MIA for some of the CBS procedural’s upcoming 14th season. After a reported heated exchange with an eight-months-pregnant writer over the direction of his character, Eads, with the show since its first season, is taking a leave of absence. “George Eads will not appear in several episodes during the first half of the season,” said a CBS rep in a statement. “We look forward to him returning to CSI very soon.” Series returns Wednesday, September 25 at 10p.
In another sign that TV is becoming increasingly important to Twitter, the social networking service has acquired Trendrr, a social media analytics company that specializes in tracking TV-focused social media activity, and counts among its clients ABC, MTV and Univision. (Trendrr says it will honor its existing contracts, but won’t be signing new ones.) The deal comes a month after a Trendrr study reported that Facebook has five times more TV chatter than Twitter – a study that likely won’t be repeated.
Fox is going all-out to promote upcoming Brookly Nine-Nine, handing every minute of its precious national promo time Wednesday night to the Andy Samberg/Andre Braugher sitcom. The show, to be part of a Tuesday night comedy block, premieres September 17 at 8:30p.
MSNBC‘s Lockup will tape its 200th episode in September. What makes the gritty, long-running non-scripted series, which shoots in maximum security prisons across the country – and has been a ratings bright spot, up 31 percent since last August while the net average declined 28 percent from last year – resonate with viewers? “Unlike most non-scripted series, there really are no scripts with Lockup,” exec producer Elise Warner tells Cynopsis. “It’s straight documentary. Our viewers have been loyal for so long because the program offers the only unfiltered look at life behind bars. There are no second takes. It’s edgy and most importantly, it’s real.”
MSNBC viewers might not be used to watching glamorous awards shows on the net, but the partnership between Comcast NBCUniversal and the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) for a live broadcast of the American Latino Media Arts Awards also includes a live news discussion highlighting issues affecting America’s Latino community. “An awards show on MSNBC may be a shift in show content for them,” concedes NCLR Vice President Delia DeLaVara to Cynopsis, “but with the use of talent and entertainment we can hone in on the opportunity to discuss issues relevant to MSNBC audiences and to bring forward Latino voices on issues facing America.” Related programming will air on mun2, and exclusive content will be featured on Telemundo.com and MSNBC.com. Events air Friday, September 27 at 10p.
The Golf Channel admitted that an awkward attempt to get in the spirit of the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I have a dream” speech was a big mistake. Shortly after asking its Twitter followers to “Tweet your ‘golf’ dream,” the tweet was deleted. But not before the ill-advised post was roundly criticized. “The tweet in question was not appropriate and was pulled minutes after being posted this morning,” said a spokesman for the channel. “The original intent was to celebrate this important date in history, and we regret that we failed to meet that standard.”

Swimming champ Michael Phelps is paying a visit to one of his favorite TV shows, USA drama Suits. He’ll play himself on the midseason premiere of the show’s third year, airing in 2014. USA reached out to Phelps after taking note of his enthusiastic tweets about Suits, but he’s not the first star from the 2012 Olympics swim team to make a splash in prime time. Fellow gold medalist Missy Franklin appeared on ABC Family teen fave Pretty Little Liars, and Ryan Lochte did time on CW‘s 90210.
After a high-profile exit from Scientology, Leah Remini (King of Queens) has joined the cast of ABC‘s Dancing With the Stars. The full line-up of hopeful hoofers will be announced on GMA Wednesday, September 4; series seventeen premieres Monday, September 16 at 8p.
AMC can’t get enough of David Morrissey. The Walking Dead bad guy will also star in the cable net’s pilot Line of Sight, as a National Transportation Safety Board inspector who survives a crash. “We are huge fans of David Morrissey and are glad he’ll be doing double duty,” said AMC in a statement. Season four of the zombie drama premieres Sunday, October 13.
Comedian/actor Leslie Jordan has joined the cast of American Horror Story: Coven. Season three of the FX anthology series premieres Wednesday, October 9 at 10p.
Julie Bristow, who left Canada’s CBC in June, has launched Bristow Global Media. Bristow is partnering with media investment company GroupM Entertainment, and has struck a non-exclusive deal with celebrity chef Jamie Oliver‘s Fresh One Productions for programming. Bristow’s goal is to implement a new broadcast model that uses social media and digital content earlier in the production process to engage viewers, “We’re entering the market at a unique time,” said Bristow. “The business opportunities are unprecedented and we have the resources and expertise to create content that speaks to directly to today’s consumer in an ever changing global landscape.”
Daniel March, former Echo Bridge Entertainment International Pres, has launched packaging, acquisition and distribution company Dynamic Television. DT debuts with 160 hours of Conan O’Brien’s TBS series Conan, as well as made-for-TV movies from Syfy and UPTV.
OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network has ordered docu-series Crazy.Sexy.Life, about four fabulous friends navigating life in NYC. The net is offering a preview of the show on Tuesday, September 3 at 10p, after the fall finale of Tyler Perry drama The Haves and the Have Nots, which saw its highest rating (1.76 W25-54) on August 20. “Stepping into scripted programming with Tyler Perry was a turning point for us,” Erik Logan, president of OWN and Harpo Studios, tells Cynopsis. Series will premiere in early 2014.
The Amazing Race has unveiled the teams competing in season 23 of the CBS reality show, and they include theater performers who call themselves the “Queens of Bingo,” married E.R. doctors and baseball wives. Of course, teams will travel at breakneck speed all over the globe, including jaunts to Chile, Norway and Abu Dhabi – which is one of the show’s big appeals, creator/exec producer Bertram van Munster tells Cynopsis. “The contestants must deal with all the facets and effects of travel, including jet lag and general exhaustion, unfamiliar surroundings, and different food,” says van Munster. Series returns Sunday, September 29 at 8p.
TLC is tacking on two more eps of Breaking Amish: LA, which will air back to back and serve as the season finale on Sunday, September 29 at 9p. Order includes Breaking Amish: The Shunning Truth, a reunion show; fans will be asked to submit questions for the group on Facebook. The reality show has been averaging 1.8 million P2+ viewers.
Bravo‘s bringing back freshman docu-series Below Deck, about crew members on a yacht. The season finale on Monday earned its highest ratings, 1.8 million total viewers and 966,000 A18-49. A reunion show airs Monday, September 2 at 10p, hosted by Andy Cohen.
A false advertising complaint lodged against U.K.’s Virgin Media was batted down by watchdog Advertising Standards Authority on Wednesday. The ad, featuring David Tennant (Dr. Who) and sprinter Usain Bolt, widely considered the fastest person ever, touts the cable giant’s “super-fast broadband,” a claim with which telecom rival BT took issue. But the ASA pointed to a report indicating that the advertised super-fast service was achieved by most consumers, supporting VM’s claims.
Broadway’s Andrea Martin (Pippin) will star in Canadian sitcom Working the Engels. The Global Television show will start filming in fall 2014.
America Now will reach 80 percent of the country when it returns with new episodes for its fourth season on Monday, September 9. The news magazine, hosted by Leeza Gibbons and Bill Rancic, will be broadcast in 9 of the 10 top markets and is syndicated by Trifecta Entertainment & Media.
In the eve of its third season, RightThisMinute has expanded its reach to 85 percent of the country. The breezy, low-budget broadcast strip from MGM Domestic Television Distribution that showcases Internet videos with viral potential now clears the top 30 markets, and is the top syndicated show A25-54 in San Francisco, one of several markets where it’s particularly strong. “RightThisMinute has a lot of second-screen viewing and Bay Area viewers are really connected,” the exec in charge of production, Phil Alvidez, tells Cynopsis. “Because of RTM’s success, KTVU also is running our show at 4 pm as a lead-in the its news, replacing Dr. Oz. That’s huge! And KGTV in San Diego is moving us to 4pm also and a news lead-in for fall.”

Even with numbers that tied its lowest Tuesday airing, NBC‘s America’s Got Talent was tops on Tuesday in total viewers (8.5 million) and A18-49 (2.2 rating). ABC‘s Extreme Weight Loss dipped 15 percent from last week, with 3.8 million total viewers/1.1. Fox had the only reality series to post a gain, with So You Think You Can Dance jumping 4 percent in viewers (4 million) and 8 percent A18-49 (1.3).
While more than 10 million viewers tuned into the racy VMA performances on MTV Sunday night, Sportsman Channel offered counter programming that ranked the sports lifestyle net tops among mid-sized networks in select demos. Aporkalypse 2013 scored .5 for M18-49 and .4 for M18-34 at 9p, enough to make the hour featuring outdoorsmen attacking wild pigs number one. “The only booties quivering on Sportsman’s twerk-free Aporkalypse Now 2013 were pork butts,” notes the channel’s CEO, Gavin Harvey, to Cynopsis, referencing Miley Cyrus’ raunchy performance, “yet we still had a good percentage of guys who preferred to watch our version of feral animals gone wild than MTV’s.”
CBS held steady last week, even with the Time Warner Cable blackout that’s costing it 3.2 million potential eyeballs, leading in A18-49 with a summer-high 1.5/5. But cable owned the top two shows in the demo, with MTV’s VMAs drawing 5.2/14 and A&E’s Duck Dynasty earning 4.5/13.
Al Jazeera America got off to a weak start, with its most-watched show, Thursday night’s Real Money with Ali Velshi, drawing 54,000 viewers. AJAM is broadcast in 40 million homes.
Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: NBC led Tuesday night among A18-49 viewers with 1.8/5, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. Univision’s Porque el Amor Manda led in the 8p hour with 1.6/5, followed by 1.4/5 for FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance. At 9p NBC’s America’s Got Talent was on top with 2.1/6, with Univision’s Tempestad settling for second with 1.6/5. NBC’s Talent held onto the 10p hour with 2.4/4, against the 1.4/4 Univision posted for Que Bonito Amor.
