Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 26, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you live from sunny downtown Burbank.
The Olympics gets another gold on Tuesday night with an overall 8.2/23 A18-49 demo rating according to Nielsen Media Research. In non sporting programming, CBS was #1 posting a 3.4/9 for a repeat of Navy NCIS and original eps of Big Brother (4.0/10) and Amazing Race (4.4/11). Through the first 12 days of NBC’s Olympic coverage, the games have attracted 192 million unduplicated viewers overall, with an average of 26.1 million viewers per primetime session.
Originally scheduled to move into the broadcast booth for just a handful of games, filling in for ESPNer Mike Patrick, Pat Summerall has agreed to sit in for the first game of the regular season on 9/12. Patrick is home recuperating from triple bypass surgery and is expected to return to the both in October.
Casting Note: Aiesha Tyler will join the cast of CSI for a multiple-episode story arc, playing an offbeat scientist joining the Las Vegas crime scene team. She will also do a group of eps on the Fox drama series 24 as a data analyst.
The top five line up of DMA markets according to the most recent list released by Nielsen Media Research, has changed. New York is still #1 (accounting for 6.71% of the total US TV population, down slightly from 6.80% a year ago). Los Angeles is #2 (4.9%) Chicago is #3 (3.1%) Philadelphia is #4 (2.6%) Here’s a change — Boston steps up to #5 (2.18%) flip flopping with San Francisco, now #6 (2.15%). The rest of the top ten remains the same. Nielsen has also made an adjustment to the number of TV Households at 109.6 million, up from last year’s estimate of 108.4 million. That also ups the total number of total viewers age 2+: 277.93 million, up from 275,58 million a year ago. The new numbers go into effect on Monday, 9/5.
If you’ve watched any of the Olympics, you’ve probably seen the Corvette ad with the music from the Rolling Stones – Jumpin’ Jack Flash, featuring a young man, approx 12 or 13, imagining what it would be like to drive a Corvette, flying down the street and in fact into the air. Among my car-conscious 13 year old, this commercial was a recent favorite. Among many safety groups – not so much. In fact, these safety groups have pressured GM to pull the ad. Spokesman Joe Jacuzzi for General Motors said, “we’ve decided to pull it due to responses and feedback we’ve received…It’s a big ad and it’s been airing for a while, but we’ve got a whole campaign.”
Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. has named Terry K. Quan VP/Business Development for the TV Guide Television Group. Terry will be based in LA, reporting to Sheldon Rabinowitz, SVP/Business Development and Finance for the TV Gu. In his new role, he will manage and coordinate the development activities on behalf of the Company’s cable and satellite businesses, including TV Guide Channel, TV Guide International, TV Guide’s interactive program guide business and its new interactive services, including non-linear networks.
Starz Encore Group has announced the appt of Edward L. Huguez as EVP/Sales, beginning September 1. Edward makes the move to Starz from Midstream Technologies Inc., where he was Pres/CEO and Chairman for three years.
Cynopsis has turned a corner. Since its launch, all new subscription requests have been handled personally by me so that all new subscribers would be added to the list so they’d be sure to receive the very next edition of Cynopsis. That is now changing. With the increase of daily new subscriptions to Cynopsis (approx 75-100 daily), as well as the other two Cynopsis editions, the need has arisen for this process to be dealt with via forms, internet sites, and automatics. I suppose a little good news / bad news, but also necessary to assure all new subscribers (or new email addresses, or even cancelled subscriptions) are handled before the next edition. Thanks for your continued patronage, and if you are recommending anyone sign up for this edition, or any Cynopsis edition, please encourage them to visit www.cynopsis.com to do so.

The History Channelpresents This Day in History: 1920: Women are guaranteed the right to vote when Tennessee ratifies the Nineteenth Amendment, which is formally proclaimed adopted by Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby. After more than 70 years of struggle by woman suffragists, Congress and the states agreed that gender, like race, could not bar a U.S. citizen from the franchise.
Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: A little movie trivia — what kind of car was Brian’s first in the film Too Fast Too Furious? As my husband, son and I are doing the “Hollywood” thing this week, and were at Universal Studios yesterday, my son (13) swears the name of Brian’s first car in the film was a NISSAN SKYLINE. (The Mitsubishi Eclipse was his first car in the first movie, Fast and the Furious.) Kudos to: Tom O’Connor-ABC/NY; Henry Gallegos-ITN Networks/NY; Andy Bennett-Brighter Child Interactive/Worthington OH; Dennis Rodriguez-NBC Universal/NY; Adam Clay-KHOU/Houston; Kenny Mueller-NCC/Dallas; Cathy Lyons-KTRV/Boise; Manuel Jaramillo-Univision/Bakersfield.
Today’s Trivia Question: Early in Phyllis Diller’s career as the first female stand-up comic, she did her comedy in a burlesque house. The question is, what famous writer was a burlesque dancer at the same club during the same time? (click hereto respond to the trivia question and please be sure to include with your answer your name, company, city and time zone. Only the second four correct responses from each time zone will be listed in tomorrow’s kudo list.)
