Good Morning, it’s Thursday, August 23, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

YouTube finally unveiled its plans to use in stream overlay ads on its video sharing site. The semi-transparent ads, which appear on the bottom fifth of the video player, begin to appear 15 seconds into a clip and last up to 10 seconds. User can click on an ad to pull up a separate video trailer. Advertisers can use the system to target viewers by age, s#x, geography, daypart and even video genre. Google will sell the InVideo ads at a rate staring at $20 per thousand impressions, initially only to partner video makers. Also, the ads will only come up when the videos are played on YouTube.com. Not surprisingly, overlay ad pioneer VideoEgg is already crying foul!
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Virgin Mobile USA partnered with Intercasting Corp. to launch a series of mobile social networking sites targeting niche audiences and specific demographic groups. The WAP-based sites include AsianAmerican.com, BlackPlanet.com, LGBT site GLEE.com, Hispanic-focused MiGentre.com and the popular community site LiveJournal.com. Intercasting’s Anthem platform specializes in optimizing social networks for mobile use. Pricing options vary based on usage, letting users pay by the day, by month or by volume.
 
MySpace and MTV are partnering to launch the first ever interactive, real-time Presidential dialogue series. The inaugural dialogue will begin with former Senator John Edwards in New Hampshire on Thursday, September 27, webcast live on MySpaceTV and MTV.com. (Sen. Edwards is the first of 11 candidates confirmed to participate.) Viewers can participate by uploading videos, participating in real-time polling and chatting via instant messaging.
 
CBS Sportline dropped “line” from its brand name, changing it to simply CBS Sports.com. The Sportsline moniker was left over from the independent site Sportline.com, which launched back in 1995 then was acquired by Viacom in 2004.
 
Goldstone Technologies entered into an agreement with US-based Echelon Studios to boost its video library content for its Video-on-Demand subscribers. The revenue-sharing arrangement will add more than 3,500 Echelon titles to the IPTV service, available in several Asia Pacific countries.
 
PBS Kids Sprout relaunched its website adding preschooler generated content, parent blogs, new casual games and other web 2.0 features. For instance, “My Refrigerator” allows preschoolers and their families to create a virtual refrigerator displaying their photos and artwork, which can be sent via email to their friends and other family members.
 
London-based online video solutions provider ROO joined with Aardman Animations to re-launch the Wallace and Gromit website. The new site ads extensive video clips from the Wallace and Gromit archive, as well as free wallpapers and visuals embeddable on blogs and personal profiles. It also enables user-generated mash-ups, using the Nick Park characters. 
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

Google unveiled Sky, providing images of the heavens from several third party science organizations here on Earth. Google Earth users will be able to see as many as 100 million individual stars and 200 million different galaxies through high-resolution cameras pointed into space. Like Google Earth, the user interface allows dragging, zooming and scanning. To try it out, download the latest version of Google Earth.
 
Social video networking site Broadcaster.com debuted new “remote video” embeddable tags allowing users to integrate live video streams into their personal profile pages.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
 

The NAB wrote a letter to provide the FCC with further detail on its DTV Transition campaign to educate consumers on what they will need to do to receive digital signals after February 17, 2009. A five-man staff will head a campaign that includes briefing reporters in major cities, planning ad buys and retailer point-of-purchase guides and devising a multifaceted PSA campaign including spots, crawls and a comprehensive graphics package that will go out starting in December.
 
Digital media company DivX acquired the video search and discovery assets of Veatros L.L.C. spun out of the University of Kansas. DivX will integrate the real-time video processing technology into its DivX Connected platform, a living room media networking solution.
 
Tivo‘s recently-reduced $300 HD DVR hit stores. (Here’s a link to David Pogue’s gushing review of the device when it retailed for $800). It features the latest Tivo upgrades including a function than enables movie and TV downloads from Amazon.com and Home Movie Sharing with other Tivo users. DirecTV, which no longer offers Tivo DVRs to its customers, is also out with new DirecTV-branded HD DVR for about the same price.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Bay Area-based digital ad agency AKQA acquired search marketing firm SearchRev, known for managing search engine campaigns for clients such as Yahoo!, Shutterfly and Coke. SearchRev will continue to run as a stand-alone unit headed by co-founders David Kandasmy and Eduardo Llach.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

                        
A new global survey of consumer digital media habits by the IBM Institute for Business Value found that the internet is severely cutting into TV-watching time. Among respondents, 19 percent stated spending six hours or more per day on personal Internet usage versus 9 percent who reported the same levels of TV viewing. One to four hours of TV usage was reported by 66%, compared with 60% for the Web. Online and mobile video adoption is on the rise. Eighty-one percent surveyed said they’ve watched or want to watch PC video; 42 percent indicated they’ve watched or want to watch mobile video. Social networking usage is also increasing rapidly across the world.

Travel Channel Media made a number of new hires and promotions:

  • Patrick Lafferty was upped to Chief Creative Officer overseeing television, video, and audio production, marketing, communications and new platform development for the Travel Channel and travelchannel.com
  • Jonathan Sichel was upped to SVP/Commercial Affairs and Operations, overseeing legal, business and administrative functions and integrated travel media businesses.
  • Michael Klein becomes SVP/Content, responsible for the development, strategic planning, management and execution of content for the Travel Channel, platform extensions and partnerships
  • Mickey Mckenzie was promoted to VP/Production Management and Operations, overseeing all business aspects of programming deals
  • Matthew Gould was named VP/Development, overseeing the incubation and launch of all new television programs as well as VOD strategy
  • Linette Hwu was hired as VP/Legal Affairs. Linette is responsible for all legal functions of the integrated travel media business, including the Travel Channel network, travelchannel.com as well as all interactive, VOD and mobile extensions

Wall Street Journal Online
named Almar Latour as its new Managing Editor, effective September 4. Almar previously served as Bureau Chief for the Journal’s technology group. He replaces Bill Grueskin, who was recently named Deputy Managing Editor of The Wall Street Journal.
 
WorldNow hired Adam Gordon as Chief Revenue Officer, National Ad Sales. The former IBS national sales executive will oversee all national and regional sales efforts from the WorldNow headquarters in Manhattan, reporting to Bob Mischel, COO/CFO.
 



~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
 

Playboy is getting into the social networking craze with PlayboyU.com, a new attempt to market to the student body in the language it is most comfortable with. It’s free to join, but enrollment is by invite only and limited to college students with .edu email address. Not unlike Facebook, it is all about letting your friends know how much of a party animal you are, allowing users to upload photos, videos and messages visible to only those within your group. Playboy says it will keep nudity off the site but not necessarily scantily clad women and will do its best to bar non-student campus personnel from joining. Social networking platform Ning, co-founded by Netscape’s Marc Andreessen, is powering PlayboyU.
