A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM PIVOT MEDIA

pivot: Turn Here for a New TV Network August 1

Millennials.Think they don’t watch the news?
At pivot, we think they are the news.

Introducing Take Part Live, a new LIVE topical interactive series every weeknight at midnight.

Hosts Jacob Soboroff and Cara Santa Maria get beyond the headlines and hashtags to address the stories that matter most to Millennials.

“We’re chipping away at the entitlement gap,” NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke told analysts in an earnings call Wednesday, about the disparity between the rates and retransmission fees NBCUni receives versus its rivals. “There’s clearly a gap between what we deserve to be paid and what we are paid. In some instances there are networks that get over 20% more than we do on a CPM basis… We think this is a big opportunity for the company,” said Burke. “I think in the next two, three or four years you will see real progress there.”

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Sumner Redstone couldn’t help crowing about CBS‘s second quarter earnings, as the net reported its highest-ever quarterly profits on Wednesday. “CBS’s remarkable momentum continues to build,” said the CBS Corporation‘s executive chairman. “This is a company built for long-term success.” The net got a 22% boost in content licensing and distribution revenue, with big assists from digital streaming and international syndication; affiliate and subscription fee revenues saw an 18% lift.

Scripps Network is turning the upscale audience into weekend couch potatoes. According to Nielsen, in Q2 HGTV ranked first in ad-supported cable on weekends with the W25-54 upscale audience (household income $100k+ and $125k). And while DIY Network ranked 84th in all of cable, it came in at #30 in weekend audience for A25-54, HHI $125+. GM of HGTV and DIY Kathleen Finch explains to Cynopsis, “Weekends are when people naturally think about their homes and how they live. They entertain on weekends, do yard work, tackle projects, and increasingly they sit if front of a Yard Crashers marathon on DIY or a two-hour stack of Hawaii Life on HGTV.” Outside of the numbers, what’s the draw to advertisers? “We attract an audience that’s incredibly engaged in what they’re watching,” says Finch. “Our viewers are upscale homeowners who believe the adage that their home is their castle, and weekends are when they’re looking for information and products to help improve that castle.”

A small business will muscle into Super Bowl action with the big guys, thanks to a campaign by Intuit. The financial software company is soliciting company stories from small businesses for online voting by the public. The final four will receive TV advertising, with the winner getting at 30-second spot on the big game on FOX (approximate value: $3-4 million).

Showtime goes live: Showtime Networks added live East and West Coast feeds to its TV Everywhere service, Showtime Anytime. Subscribers can click on the “Live TV” button and watch what’s airing on the network, and switch between the East and West Coast feeds.

Talk about TV Everywhere: TV-movie Sharknado has had two encores since its July 11 premiere, and will get Regal Theaters screenings Friday, August 2. Now Syfy and The Asylum have signed a merchandising deal for the cult hit. “The bold and over-the-top Sharknado brand is the perfect fit for a wide range of fun merchandise,” said Syfy Ventures vp Jeff Li of the upcoming t-shirts, posters, etc.

ABC’s Revenge is also getting marketed off-screen, in the form of a novel. Schooled In Revenge focuses on Rebun Island, where the soap’s Emily Thorne trained for her mission to avenge her father being framed for a murder he didn’t commit. The book, featuring a new vengeance-hungry heroine, will be available in paperback and digitally on Tuesday, August 20, the same day as the release of the show’s second season DVD. Season three of the drama premieres Sunday, September 29 at 9p.

Will Dexter live on? Showtime president David Nevins said at the TCA that “of course” a spinoff of serial killer drama, now in its eighth and final season, is possible. The net inked a deal with showrunner Scott Buck, pointed out Nevins, so “draw your own conclusions.”

Ross Mathews headlines new E! talker Hello Ross, a “weekly fan destination where the intersections of celebrity gossip and pop culture collide.” The show, premiering September 6 at 10p, will use social media to connect host, guests and viewers.

At the TCA to pitch her new Sony Pictures TV talker, The Queen Latifah Show, the royal one had a gift to pique the interest of attendees: a live version of “When you’re Good to Mama,” her signature tune from Chicago, customized for the TCA audience to focus on her new show. (Latifah was nominated for a Supporting Actress in the 2002 film.) The actress/singer/comedian’s hour-long program, airing on CBS owned-and-operated channels, debuts Monday, September 16.

Reality fraud? Steve Stevens, star of CNBC‘s upcoming reality show about high-stakes sports betting, Money Talks, is being labeled a fraud by sports handicapping web site Wager Minds. A CNBC spokesperson issued a statement saying the net is aware of a 1999 conviction for Stevens (apparently for a telemarketing scheme), and that, “Viewers should tune in and draw their own conclusions. We are merely betting that viewers will be interested in the world of touts and handicappers and in no way endorse Stevens’ picks or his business model.” Show premieres Tuesday, September 10 at 10p.

President Obama will appear on the Tuesday, August 6 broadcast of NBC’s Tonight Show. It will be his sixth on-camera chat with Jay Leno; the net says talk will center on jobs initiatives and the economy (though we’re hoping for a few more bars of “Let’s Stay Together,” too).

Hulu acting CEO Andy Forssell insists there’s not as much competition as you’d think among Hulu, Amazon and Netflix. “I don’t think we get jealous,” Forsell told the Hollywood Reporter. “Sure, we compete buying content, but we compete very little head to head in terms of users… We’re all involved in the same mission, which is, how do you win the battle for screen time?” Especially for younger viewers, who “are spending more and more time on Facebook or Snapchat or whatever the latest things are,” says Forssell. “All of us are interested in how, for those viewers in particular, we can make it easy, fun and the right choice for them to watch a traditional TV show.”

The Fox Writers Intensive program has selected writer-director Yule Caise as winner of a development deal with FX Networks, where he’ll pitch an original script. Designed to “nurture experienced writers who have diverse voices, backgrounds and life experiences,” the Intensive was designed to create a pipeline for potential Fox productions. Its ten finalists spent four months working on their skills with industry vets.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

ABC reality series Celebrity Wife was picked up for a 13-ep season three. In the series, couples with different lifestyles trade spouses; sophomore season included Andy Dick, Bristol Palin and Alan Thicke.

Season three of OWN‘s Home Made Simple is in production, with Soleil Moon Frye (yup, Punky Brewster) as the weekly show’s new host. Mom-of-two Frye has written a parenting book, Happy Chaos and is a regular contributor on Today.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Amazon is once again letting the public decide which of its pilots will go to series. Amazon Studios is producing five original pilots for children that come from TV vets as well as newcomers discovered through the studio’s open-door submission process. Viewers can watch the efforts on Amazon Instant Video, and LOVEFiLM in the U.K., and their feedback will help determine which will be produced as series. “After the success of our first pilots, we look forward to getting lots more fantastic feedback from kids and parents,” said Roy Price, director of Amazon Studios. Of the 14 pilots Amazon launched in April, five were chosen to go to series, and will stream on Prime Instant Video later this year and in early 2014.

ABC has hired Dustin Lance Black (Milk) to develop an eight-hour miniseries about the gay rights movement, with ABC Studios. The story will be based on Black’s experience as a gay rights activist.

Nick Cannon will get his Robin Leach on in a revamped version of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous for Style Media. “Nick’s comedic and down-to-earth perspective on the opulence of the wealthy makes him the ideal host as we reinvent this pop culture classic,” said Style Media president Salaam Coleman Smith of the actor/rapper/husband of Mariah Carey. “With Nick’s humorous insight, Style will give viewers front-row access to how today’s wealthy live, paying homage to the original ‘Lifestyles’ in a fresh, fun and irreverent way.”

Todd Holland (Go On) has sold a drama (unnamed) to NBC about immortal humans, which he’ll write and executive produce through his Dark Toy Entertainment.

Montreal’s Just For Laughs Television announced it will produce a record 40 hours of comedy programming, including 13 one-hour specials and 26 half-hour episodes for The Comedy Network, and four one-hour specials for CBC Television.

~ CASTING NEWS ~

NBC‘s Parks and Recreation will lose two of its stars mid-season. Rob Lowe and Rashida Jones will leave after the 13th episode; the two play an on-again, of-again couple on the show. Season six premieres Thursday, September 26 at 8p.

Kelly Reilly (Sherlock Holmes) will star in the ABC limited series, The Black Box, about a neuroscientist secretly struggling with mental illness. No premiere date has been set.

Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development) will guest on the fourth season of FOX‘s Raising Hope. Series returns Friday, November 8 at 9p.

Jim Murray (Chaos) has been cast in season two of Syfy drama Defiance. He’ll play the town’s  “shrewd, polished and charming” mayor.

Newbie Yael Grobglas will play noblewoman Olivia on the new CW period drama Reign. “In each episode, we’ll educate people on what element of history helps our story,” executive producer Laurie McCarthy told reporters Tuesday at the TCA. But they won’t take themselves too seriously, promises the exec: “It’s TV, so we can take creative license. We’re going to have fun.” Show bows Thursday, October 17 at 9p.

At the TCA to promote the animated comedy he co-created for Hulu, The Awesomes, Seth Meyers talked about taking over for Jimmy Fallon on Late Night in February. “We’re in the early stages,” Meyers said. “More than anything we’re staffing – we know how important it is to put together a strong staff of writers.” As for his Weekend Update job on SNL, “I’ll go back to SNL in the fall and work there up until Late Night… I’ll stay at that desk until they get a new desk.”

Danny Trejo has landed a role on FX’s new George Lopez sitcom, St. George, about a recently divorced dad. Also joining the cast are Jenn Lyon and Kaden Gibson.

Ripper Street adds three actors to its cast for season two: David Costabile (Breaking Bad), Damien Molony (Being Human), Joseph Mawle (Game of Thrones) and Leanne Best join the BBC America drama set in 1890 London.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Animated primetime comedy Fugget About It, from Toronto’s 9 Story Entertainment, will run in the U.S. on Hulu and Hulu Plus as a Hulu Exclusive series. “This series is our first foray into primetime comedy and we look forward to bringing it to Hulu’s loyal comedy followers,” said 9 Story president and CEO Vince Commisso.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

After tragedy shuttered the French version of Survivor, the reality competition is coming back with an all-star season to air in 2014. The show was cancelled after a contestant died on March 22, the first day of filming in Cambodia, and a staff doctor committed suicide on April 1, explaining in a note that his reputation had been sullied by the media’s “unjust accusations.” Adventure Line Productions said it will hire experts to review its emergency medical procedures for this go-round.

British pay-TV’s Universal Channel is getting a makeover. The new look  updated logo, look and tagline will first be seen Monday, August 5.

Big Bird joins Big Ben when Sesame Street travels back to the UK, courtesy of Virgin Media. Episodes from seasons 36 to 43 of the children’s show that debuted in 1969 are now available on Virgin TV On Demand, and online with Virgin TV Everywhere.
