USA Network announced plans to launch its fifth new original series, Facing Kate in January starring Sarah Shahi (Life, The L Word). Facing Kate is about Kate Reed (Shahi) a litigator on top of her game who becomes frustrated with the system and the injustices she witnesses and decides to become a mediator. Kate’s new career has her in the middle of conflicts between Fortune 500 corporations to bitter divorces. The series is produced by Universal Cable Productions. Furthermore, USA will bring back its original series Psych starting November 10 at 10p and Burn Notice with new episodes premiering November 11 at 10p. USA’s other two summer original series, Royal Pains and White Collar will return in January.

BET Networks is readying a new docu-reality competition series, Changing Lanes premiering on September 1 at 8p. The series, in partnership with NASCAR will search for the next generation of minority and female racecar drivers. The eight-episode series will be narrated by rapper/actor Ludacris with the final winner receiving a spot on Max Siegel’s NASCAR Revolution Racing team. The contestants involved in the show are part of NASCAR’s driver development program called Drive for Diversity which offers opportunities for minority and female drivers to compete in the NASCAR arena. Changing Lanes is produced by BET Networks, NASCAR, NASCAR Media Group, 10 x 10 Entertainment and The 909 Group.

Oxygen has two new docu-series on tap this fall:

  • House of Glam focuses on the trendy stylists at the B Lynn Group, a top image agency in the entertainment business. Produced by Left/Right Inc. and The Foundry Media Group, this series opens October 5 at 10p then later moves into a new time slot of Wednesdays at 9p starting November 3.
  • Running Russell Simmons offers an insider look into the life of Russell Simmons and the team of assistants who keep everything running. Produced by Simmons Lathan Media Group and Picture This Television, this series premieres November 2 at 10p.

Additionally, Oxygen brings back a new season of Snapped with all-new episodes on August 22 at 10p. The new season offers more deadly tales of women and the situations that allegedly made them snap.

Hallmark Channel announced details behind the largest multi-platform marketing launch in the network’s history surrounding the premiere of The Martha Stewart Show on September 13 at 10a. The sixth season of The Martha Stewart Show on Hallmark Channel centers on a multi-million dollar consumer campaign with the tag line “Make the Move With Martha” designed to encourage viewers to watch the show and the new block of lifestyle programs airing exclusively on the network Monday through Friday from 10a to 6p. The multi-tiered marketing effort includes a mixture of national paid media, out-of-home and place-based advertising, a nationwide Valpak promotion, a national consumer sweepstakes, multiple websites, social media initiatives as well as partnerships with retailers such as Macy’s, Home Depot and PetSmart. The campaign officially began this Monday.

E! delves into the world of scary eating disorders in the new six-part series What’s Eating You produced by 3 Ball Productions. The show, premiering October 13 at 10p, documents the challenges facing today’s women and men who battle distorted body images as they relate their true stories of food, fear and obsession.

Syfy rounds out its fall schedule with the announcement of new and returning series premiere dates:

  • Scare Tactics is back for a fourth season on October 4 at 9p. Hallock Healey Entertainment produces.
  • Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files, produced by BASE Productions and Universal Networks International, returns November 4 at 9p.
  • Hollywood Treasure, a new one-hour weekly docu/reality series premieres November 4 at 10p. Shevick*Zupon Entertainment produces.
  • Stargate Universe with a second season debuts on a new night beginning September 28 at 9p with 20 episodes produced and distributed by MGM Worldwide Television Distribution.
  • Sanctuary is back for a third season also on a new night starting September 28 at 10p, with 20 episodes produced in association with Syfy and distributed by Tricon Films and Television.
  • WWE Friday Night Smackdown moves to its new home on Syfy with new weekly two-hour episodes beginning October 1 at 8p. 

DIY Network features 90s pop star Vanilla Ice (aka Robert Van Winkle) and his passion for home renovation in The Vanilla Ice Project beginning October 14 at 9p. The half-hour 10-episode series follows the self-taught home renovator as he tackles his biggest project to-date, the overhaul of a six-bedroom, five-bath lake home in Palm Beach, FL. After the premiere on October 14, new episodes of The Vanilla Ice Project air on DIY Network each Thursday at 930p with encore episodes airing on Thursdays at 9p.

ABC Family’s debut of Melissa & Joey on Tuesday at 8p became the cable network’s #1 series launch ever among A18-49 and the #2 series launch among W18-49. The original series also is now ABC Family’s most-watched comedy debut in the history of the network in total viewers and in key 18-49 and 18-34 demos and viewers 12-34. Specifically, the half-hour series netted 1.26 million with A18-49; 902,000 among W18-49; and 2.15 million total viewers.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

PBS’ long-running business show Nightly Business Report was acquired by the private company NBR Worldwide headed by Mykalai Kontilai, a former manager of mixed martial artists and TV show distributor, from its owner public station WPBT-TV in Miami. The transaction was completed last Friday and was announced to staffers yesterday. The half-hour show boasts approximately 500,000 viewers each night. 
 
Spike TV picked up the licensing rights to air Sylvester Stallone’s action movie The Expendables from Lionsgate. Spike will air the movie in April 2013.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

HBO has a new drama series in the works from Rod Lurie titled The Crux which stars Kevin Spacey, reports Variety. The project, set in Los Angeles, is moving fast through the development ranks at HBO about a charismatic leader of a multibillion dollar global cult. Marc Frydman is co-writing the script with Lurie who will also direct the pilot. Spacey, Lurie and Frydman will serve as executive producers along with Spacey’s partner, Dana Brunetti at Trigger Street Productions. The project also falls under the first-look deal that HBO has with Trigger Street.

CBS is developing a companion spin-off series based on its unscripted show Undercover Boss, cites The Live Feed. The same producers behind Undercover Boss, Studio Lambert were handed an untitled pilot order from CBS where two employees who work at the same company compete for a major promotion. The episodes will feature behind-the-scenes happenings at top US companies.

Bobby Cannavale (Third Watch) landed a role on CBS’ upcoming cop drama Blue Bloods, per TV Guide. Cannavale will play Charles Rosselini, the boss to Bridget Moynahan’s Assistant DA character, Erin Reagan. Blue Bloods stars Tom Selleck as the patriarch and chief of police at NYPD, a title his father (Len Cariou) held while his two sons (Donnie Wahlberg and Will Estes) are on the NYPD force and Erin, his daughter, is a single mom working in the DA’s office. Cannavale will debut his character starting with the October 15 episode though the frosh drama opens September 24 at 10p.

Billy Bush and Kit Hoover were tapped as co-hosts for the new first-run, syndicated entertainment news talk show Access Hollywood Live. Bush is currently the anchor on Access Hollywood and will also co-host NBC’s Red Carpet to the Primetime Emmy Awards pre-show special. Hoover was last seen as host of ABC’s reality show Shaq Vs. Access Hollywood Live from NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution, premieres September 13.

Tuesday  A18-49 Analysis:  NBC stacked up the winning lineup Wednesday night among A18-49 at 2.4/7, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. ABC’s Wipeout took out the competition during 8p at 3.1/10 followed by UNIV’s Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe at 2.1/7. At 9p, NBC’s America’s Got Talent jumped into first place with a 3.0/9 with UNIV’s Soy Tu Duena next at 2.4/7. NBC remained in #1 through 10p with more from America’s Got Talent at 2.8/8 while ABC trailed in second place with a Primetime: What Would You Do? repeat at 1.7/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Walker Jacobs has advanced to EVP/Turner/SI Digital Ad Sales within Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. Walker, previously SVP of the Turner Sports and Entertainment Digital unit, will continue to manage advertising sales and integrated marketing initiatives across online, VOD and mobile platforms for the recently named Turner/SI Digital roster of top entertainment, sports and kids sites. Based in New York, Walker will continue to report to David Levy, President/Sales, Distribution and Sports, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.

Arnold Worldwide promoted Neela Pal to EVP/Global Director of Brand and Business Strategy and Tom Guerin to EVP/Executive Director. Both executives will serve as Managing Partners to the company.

Whit Haskel was tapped as VP/Marketing and Business Development by Fox Soccer Channel, Fox Soccer Plus and their associated websites. In his newly created position, Whit is the liaison between Fox Soccer Channel entities and FOX Sports Marketing as well as the company’s affiliate sales and advertising sales units. Whit reports to David Nathanson, GM, Fox Soccer Channel.

Melissa Roper Barnett was appointed SVP/Network Business Affairs at HBO where she will be in charge of negotiating domestic distribution deals for all of HBO’s networks. Melissa has been with HBO since 1997. She reports directly to Tom Woodbury, General Counsel/EVP, Networks Business Affairs.

MTV hired Meeri Park Cunniff as SVP/Programming Strategy to head franchise management functions for MTV properties and to establish a strategy for MTV2 and MTV’s digital networks including mtvU, MTV Hits and MTV Jams as well as non-linear platforms. Meeri will additionally manage program planning and scheduling for MTV2 and mtvU along with MTV’s acquisitions strategy. Most recently, Meeri was SVP/Programming and On-Air for TeenNick. In her new role, Meeri reports to Sarah Lindman, EVP/Programming Strategy, MTV.

Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau (CAB) tagged David Woolfson as SVP/Research and Insights where he will oversee CAB’s research efforts and will further be a leading advocate in generating progress in audience measurement for cable systems and cable networks. Prior to this appointment, David was founder of the consultancy firm David Woolfson LLC and was also at Nielsen, Turner Broadcasting and Univision. David succeeds Ira Sussman in this position who was with CAB until April 2010.
