Cynopsis: Sports
08.15.13
Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 15, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
“I can tell you that when I took this job over 20 years ago, no one – including me — could have imagined a time when we would play a regular-season National Hockey League game at Dodger Stadium on a Saturday night and a game at Yankee Stadium the following afternoon as we launch the Coors Light NHL Stadium Series with two games, within 15 hours, in two world-famous ballparks on opposite sides of the country,” proclaimed NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman to open Wednesday’s Cynopsis Sports Business Summit. “Yet that is what will happen next January 25 and 26.”
Opening with a standing room only crowd at the Grand Hyatt yesterday, the Summit broke down and dissected sports media to its core, with speakers that included David Levy’s first public forum since being named President of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc, a preview of Fox Sports 1, a touching tribute to Telemundo’s Andres Cantor as well as frank conversations from the likes of Subway’s Global CMO Tony Pace, marketing heads for the NFL, NBA, NASCAR, MLS and the USOC, and top programming executives. Lots of nuggets as well such as the USOC making big plans for the Paralympics with NBC.
Hot topics included but were not limited to: how soccer had finally become established in America, the escalating rise of sports rights and its long-term effects, the future of streaming and the second screen. Thanks to everyone for attending and a bigger one to all of our speakers for making it such as success!
ESPN is overhauling the show open for its Monday Night Football franchise, tapping filmmaker/director Peter Berg to create a new dynamic. The one-minute, 30-second open chronicles the 44-year history of the series by merging football moments from past MNF games with images of “touchstone cultural events of the past four-and-a-half decades.” The timeline-themed open makes its debut at 6:55p before ESPN’s MNF regular-season opener between the Eagles and Redskins on Sept. 9. Berg enlisted Hollywood trailers house Ignition Creative to help him create his vision.
CBS Sports Network unveiled its college football plans for the new season, with games from the Mountain West, Conference USA, Army and Navy football, the Patriot League and NCAA Division II. Overall, the Network will air 51 games this season, including more Mountain West contests than ever before. New voices on the channel include Adam Archuleta, former Penn State coach Tom Bradley and Corey Chavous. Rashan Ali joins as a sideline reporter this season, while former NFL and Colorado tight end Christian Fauria will serve as studio analyst. Andrew Catalon comes to CBS Sports Network as lead college football play-by-play announcer and will team with Aaron Taylor and reporter Lauren Gardner, forming the Network’s lead broadcast team.
Speaking of college football, ESPN Regional Television agreed in principle to acquire the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl from the Humanitarian Bowl, Inc., pending the approval of a long-form agreement. The 17th annual game will be played on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013 at 5:30p on ESPN and pits teams from the MAC and MWC. The acquisition marks the eighth bowl game to be owned and operated by the network.
Another new series set to go for FS1 with FOX Sports 1-On-1, a half-hour program airing on the new channel featuring the stars of FOX Sports interviewing the biggest stars in sports. The first episode features Michael Strahan sitting down with Tom Brady this Saturday at 2:30p. Other episodes will feature Curt Menefee with Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson; John Lynch with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, and Chris Myers with NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley.
ESPN also announced site plans for the 10th college basketball season of College GameDay Covered by State Farm. The eight-week program originates from the site of ESPN’s Saturday Primetime Presented by DIRECTV telecast begins Saturday, Jan. 18 with a special split-site show from Philadelphia and Storrs. Other sites include East Lansing, Syracuse, Memphis and Durham. Rece David hosts and is joined by Jay Bilas, Digger Phelps and Jalen Rose.
CBS Sports carries ArenaBowl XXVI on Saturday at 1p pitting the Rattlers and Soul. The matchup marks the first time in AFL history that the same two teams from the year before meet in the ArenaBowl championship game. Andrew Catalon and Anthony Herron handle microphone duties, along with reporters Ari Wolfe and Sherdrick Bonner.
Sunday’s episode of Travel Channel series Adam Richman’s Fandemonium was taped at the Indy 500. In the episode, Richman heads to the Brickyard in Indianapolis for the tailgate inventions, race-themed food, and die-hard fans of the Indy 500.
Golf Channel will offer a special edition of Morning Drive from Turning Stone Resort’s Atunyote Golf Club on Wednesday, Aug. 28 to deliver on-site coverage of the sixth annual Notah Begay III Foundation Challenge. The series will expand to three hours starting at 7a with Damon Hack and Holly Sonders reporting live from Atunyote Golf Club.
