Good morning, it’s Thursday, August 14, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
NBC figured the gods wouldn’t present a better opportunity to unveil the initial results of its new cross platform TAMi (Total Audience Measurement Index) than the first 5 days of the Summer Olympics. A total of 113 million people viewed Olympic programming on Sunday on television, online, mobile and VOD. Traffic to NBCOlympics.com reached its highest level by far on Monday at 2 million uniques (a workday, of course); The site has delivered 17.7 million video streams so far. Visits to NBC’s mobile WAP site doubled from Friday (210,000) to Monday (476,000). Best of all for NBC these eyeballs are additive not cannibalistic – some 40% are returning to digital platforms to view events they already saw on TV. The message (to television advertisers) was clear: increased availability of content is unleashing a tide of interest in which all boat are rising. And multiplatform coverage is actually helping to increase TV viewership.
¡Sorpresa! has secured the exclusive Spanish-language distribution rights to Hispanic virtual world Club Time Machine from vWorld Corporation Ltd. for the United States and its territories as well as the non-exclusive rights to the English version. For $5.95/month, $29.50/6 months or $56.50/year kids can join Club Time Machine and create their own “Hoover” avatars who fly around, earn gold to trick out their rockets with, play games and socialize with other kids.
YouTube has decided not to get into the live streaming or “lifecasting” business after all, according to Alley Insider, deciding the cash overlay is too prohibitive at a time when the company is trying to become cash flow positive (and justify its $1.65 million price tag.)
Online syndication marketplace Mochila is offering free ad-supported Olympic news and featured content to interested publishers, sourced from partners including The AP, The Guardian, Kyodo News International, Thomson Reuters, Getty Images and Zuma Press. Bloggers and larger publishers alike can syndicate Mochila’s sports content through a full suite of ad-supported publishing widgets, including interactive video and photo slideshow players.
Online video mashup tool creator GorillaSpot and Blockade Entertainment launched Mashade.com, a video game mashup site allowing fans to create their own reels from official video game trailers.
Video entertainment portal Metacafe teamed with Quattro Wireless to make its catalog of short-form videos available on Quattro’s entertainment channel. The technology will enable Metacafe to showcase videos by their realtime popularity ranking as determine by web and mobile users. Metacafe will also joint Quattro’s ad network, enabling brand advertisers to sponsor Metacafe’s independently produced programming.
There’s plenty of webinars being held online, why not a web-based VC pitch fest? On Sept. 3, iHollywood Forum is launching its first Virtual Venture Forum for start-ups involved in digital media, mobile, networking and green technology. Thirty companies will be selected to pitch online before a panel of VCs and strategic investors and an audience of up to 200 invited guests from around the world. Selections will be based on relevance to investors, market potential, funding record, partnerships, press coverage and professionalism of their presentation.
There’s nothing like a price cut to spark interest in new technologies. Broadband-delivered video set top service Vudu is running a summer sale offering 99 different movie rentals for 99 cents each, including box office hits Spider Man, Sweeney Todd and Cloverfield. The company also recently announced a new program extending the rental period for an additional 7 days for 99 cents ($1.99 for HD titles.)
After relying on MLB’s iPhone app for baseball scores and nice looking video highlights, we stumbled across a free app called SportsTap that provides quick, down and dirty stats for all the major sports including MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, NCAA, PGA, English Premier League soccer and the Olympics. It’s not comprehensive, by any means, but it’s straightforward and easy to use.
Online auction house eBay is in talks to buy a 40% stake in Korean auction site and internet retailer Gmarket. Ebay first entered the Korean market in 2001 when it became a majority shareholder in Internet Auction Co. (IAC).
In-stream video ad network ScanScout announced a wide ranging partnership with Gannett Co.’s rich media developer PointRoll to offer advertising clients more exotic creative units featuring dynamically updated data points, geo-targeting and RSS feed capabilities. PointRoll serves more than 70 billion rich media impressions to a range of Fortune 500 clients.
In an interview with Jim Cramer on CNBC’s Mad Money Google CEO Eric Schmidt promised never to sell ads on the Google homepage (the #2 most visited page on the net after Yahoo.com.) He also vowed to keep trying to monetize YouTube’s 1.3 million uploads made every 10 minutes. (Good luck with that.)

CBS Interactive reported decisive traffic increases on many of their sites following its first full month of integration with CNET Networks:
- CNET.com posted a 22% increase in unique visitors over July 2007
- BNET.com saw a 19% increase in unique visitors over last month
- For the months of May, June and July of 2008, visitors to CBSSports.com averaged a combined hour and eight minutes on the site, over ten minutes more than any competitor
- CBS.com had a 32% increase in unique users over the previous month, the largest among broadcast network TV websites
- GameSpot posted a 21% year-over-year increase in unique visitors following its coverage of E3
- Last.fm experienced a 20% increase in uniques from last month since last month’s launch of its redesigned user-interface, its highest-ever traffic
- TV.com, which will debut a new look in time for the fall television season, saw a 10% increase in unique monthly users over last month
While consumers still prefer buying their media as packaged goods, the online video subscription model pioneered by Netflix and others has tremendous upside according to a new report from In-Stat. Purchased/rented videos are expected to offer the most robust growth for online video in the near term, while ad-supported video from major TV networks will become a strong revenue contributor by 2012. By then 39% of all adults are expected to have purchased or rented a video online, and 90% of U.S. Households will have access to broadband.
Live in-flight video services and in-flight broadband may help the airline industry cope with high fuel costs and other challenges, according to a report from MultiMedia Intelligence. In-Flight Broadband services are poised to grow to $936 million in 2012, up from initial revenue of $6.6 million worldwide in passenger revenues in 2008. The market for in-flight live direct broadcast video is projected to grow from $87 million in 2007 to $913 million in 2012.
Former HBO CEO Chris Albrecht left Sports-themed talent agency IMG, claiming market conditions frustrated his and Theodore J. Forstmann’s goal of building a media and entertainment business around the brand. Chris will return to Foresee Entertainment, the content development and distribution company he helped form after leaving HBO.
Michael Mathieu has become the new CEO of video ad network YuMe, leaving his former post as President of the internet division for Freedom Communications. Co-founder and former CEO Jayant Kadambi will take on a new role as President and will remain a member of YuMe’s Board of Directors.
Anthony Schaller has been hired as CTO and EVP/Product Development at Jacked, Inc. Anthony will manage the technology, engineering, network operations, content and creative design of the company. Andy Castin also joined Jacked as Director of Partner Management, responsible for working with co-brand partners. Both will be based in the company’s Santa Monica, CA headquarters.
Samsung Electronics America hired digital marketing veteran David Steel as SVP/North American Headquarters (NAHQ) Marketing. He will be responsible for corporate planning, marketing management and market intelligence, reporting directly to S.W. Hong, EVP of NAHQ in Samsung’s Ridgefield Park, NJ headquarters.
Seattle-based online ad company Marchex Inc. named Sloan Seymour as VP/Marchex Adhere; Ed O’Keefe as VP/Performance Marketplaces; Brooks McMahon as VP/Partner Development and upped Leigh McMillan to SVP/Marketing and Communications. All are newly created positions.
Former Deep Focus publicist Clay Dollarhide has joined mPRm Public Relations as Senior Manager/Digital Marketing and Public Relations. He will head up the agency’s sPRead Solutions, focused on digital marketing and PR strategies for entertainment and technology companies.
Here’s a site that has one up on yesterday’s kwiry.com entry. Jott.com is another mobile-to-PC reminder service but this one has voice activation capabilities (perfect for states that have passed laws requiring hands-free devices while driving.) Simply call 866-JOTT-123 on your phone and the service asks you whom (or what service) you wish to “jott” a message down for and what the message is. Jott converts it to text then emails it instantly. (The easiest way to use it is to set the Jott number on speed dial so it’s always handy.) The list of services Jott integrates with is much more socially oriented including Tumblr, Twitter, Blogger and Live Journal. Speak “Zillow” when you pass a house or condo that’s for sale you want to check up on later. Jott even has a free iPhone app available.
