Cynopsis: Kids!

04/08/10

Good morning. It’s Thursday, April 8, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

A group of British kids will get to question politicians from the UK’s three biggest political parties in front of a live studio audience of kids, when the series Election returns for a half-hour CBBC General Elections 2010 special, Election: Your Vote, which will air Thursday, April 22 at 4:35p on BBC One, and encore on CBBC on April 25 at 5:15p.  Four kids (1113), each representing a specific issue, will get their chance to press Alan Johnson (Labour Party, Home Secretary), David Cameron (Conservative party leader) and Lembit Opik (Liberal Democrat, MP) on their plans to make Britain a better place for kids.  Hosted by Angellica Bell and the debate helmed by Andrew Neil with Sharon Osbourne, Julia Bradbury and Evan Davis serving as celebrity mentors.  At the end of the program the audience kids will vote on which of the four issues they believe is most important to kids.

During her appearance at the White House‘s annual Easter Egg Roll on Monday, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, read to kids from one of her Potter books and answered their questions, which included queries about another Harry Potter book, per The Washington Post.  Rowling wouldn’t say no to another book, but according to the report she did say, “maybe 10 years from now.”  Rowling did tell the kids that she would like to write more books and offered that she is working on one explaining, “I’m quite sure in the not-to-distant future I will bring out another book.”

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Nickelodeon names Technicolor‘s Bangalore-based animation studio, Paprikaas, as the animation studio the Kung Fu Panda TV series (26 episodes).  The series is based on DreamWorks Animation SKG’s feature film of the same name.  This agreement builds on the existing partnership between Nickelodeon, Technicolor and Paprikaas, which produced the CGI animated Penguins of Madagascar TV series.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network picks up an additional 13 episodes of its new animated series Adventure Time, following the series’ premiere on Monday night at 8p.(see ratings below). Created by Pendleton Ward and produced by Cartoon Network Studios in partnership with Frederator Studios, new episodes of Adventure Time will continue to debut into the fall.

Germany’s Your Family Entertainment has launched its Germany-language kid/family TV channel, yourfamily, in France on the IPTV-Platform SFR.  Together with ProSieben Sat.1 Welt, RTL, n-tv, KidsCo, among others, yourfamily is part of an exclusive German language collection of channels.  SFR customers can get the yourfamily channel by subscribing to the German-language channels ( www.lebouquetallemand.com).

The preschool science/math-centric series Peep and the Big Wide World celebrates Earth Day with a new two-part special, An Inconvenient Tooth, on April 22 exclusively on public television stations nationwide (check local listings).  The episode focuses on sustaining the resources the Earth has as Beaver Boy realizes he is gnawing down too many trees, which take he discovers take a very long time to grow.  The series is narrated by Joan Cusack.  Kids/parents can find episode related sustainability activity ideas, such as Tree Detective, at www.peepandthebigwideworld.com/activities/treedetective.html . All four seasons of the series airs on public TV stations and season one airs nationwide in Spanish on V-Me.

The first 12 episodes of The Electric Company, the Sesame Workshop and PBS Kids Go! new series, are now available for download at the iTunes store for $1.99 per episode/$19.99 for the dozen.  Later this month The Electric Company podcasts, sponsored by American Greetings and Beaches Resorts, will be available for free on iTunes and PBS.org.

MARKETING/LICENSING

HIT Entertainment names Fisher-Price as worldwide master toy licensee for Angelina Ballerina.  Fisher-Price, a subsidiary of Mattel, is creating a toy line based on the new CG animated series Angelina Ballerina The Next Steps, which features Angelina at a school for the performing arts.  The new preschool line will feature figures, dolls, playsets, dollhouses, vehicles, plush toys, electronic learning products and developmental toys.  The first products in the line will debut in the US this fall 2010 exclusively at Target stores and website.  The toy line is set to rollout around the world from 2011.  Based on the books by author The Angelina Ballerina The Next Steps series is a production of HIT Entertainment and THIRTEEN in association with Nick Jr. UK and WNET.org.

THQ unveils plans to release The Last Airbender video game exclusively for Wii and Nintendo DS/Nintendo DSi systems this June 2010, based on the Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures live-action feature film of the same name, directed by M. Night Shyamalan.  The game lets players master their “bending” skills and play as either Aang, of through the perspective of his rival, Zuko, reliving action/battle scenes from the movie.  Based on Nickelodeon’s animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, the movie, The Last Airbender, opens nationwide July 2, 2010.

Ludorum names several UK licensees for DC Thomson’s Dennis and Gnasher TV series, which airs weekdays on CBBC and BBC One.  Signing on as the UK DVD partner for the property is 2Entertain, which released its first DVD title, Double Trouble, last month.  Other newly appointed licensees include Blues for the apparel license and have already been listed for outerwear in Asda’s George as well as Mothercare and BHS, with TV Mania as the licensee for nightwear and underwear.  Smiffys is launching kids costumes and a new novelty line.  Vogue is developing a new range of houseware products.  Dennis and Gnasher licensed product will be available at leading retailers from spring 2010.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia:  This sitcom dragon (think ALF in dragon suit) awoke from a few centuries long nap, and crash-landed in the home of actor Brian and his eight year old daughter Jessica. What was the name of the show?  SCORCH  Kudos to:  John May-Cartoon Network/Atlanta; Chris Crosby-Keenspot.com/Apple Valley; Chip Beaman-Soundelux Design Music Group/Hollywood; Christopher Swiszcz-Playhouse Disney/Burbank; Brian E.S.
