Yesterday, Glenn Beck reassured viewers that while he is ending his daily show on Fox News later this year, he is not parting from Fox News Channel.  Beck, whose contract expires with the network in December, did not specify an end date for his program.  A statement about the show’s demise was released jointly by Fox News Channel and Beck’s production company, Mercury Radio Arts.  Beck did say his Mercury Radio Arts will team with Fox News to develop and produce television projects for the network in addition to content for other platforms such as Fox News’ digital assets.

Lionsgate forged a multi-year deal, licensing the first four seasons of Mad Men to Netflix.  The Mad Men episodes will be available to Netflix customers starting July 27.  Subsequent seasons will be added to Netflix after airing on AMC.  In a separate deal with Lionsgate, Netflix has held the rights to stream the first four seasons of Mad Men to customers in Canada since September 2010.

Hidden camera reality series Scare Tactics renewed for a fifth season by Syfy with 13 half-hour episodes.  Actor/comedian Tracy Morgan (30 Rock) continues as host and executive producer with production commencing this spring on the fifth season with a planned fall 2012 debut. The Cube is also completing production of the second season for Saudi Arabia’s Saudi TV and a third season is presently in post-production for the UK.

Further, ALL3MEDIA International made additional deals for the youth drama Skins in its fifth season for UK’s Channel 4 as well as the MTV North American version. New deals at MIPTV were made for Skins in Poland, Canada (Allarco), Hungary (Humor 1) and Canal Plus France as well as DVD deals in many territories.

International Television and from Twenty Twenty will debut in Africa and the Nordic region later this year.  The other drama, Above Suspicion picked up from Zodiak Rights was air starting this August in Africa.

My view from MIPTV:  This time in Cannes, I’m staying in the same apartment as I did in October.  When you do take an apartment instead of booking a hotel room, there are a few luxuries you give up — maid service, room service, that sort of thing.  But I like seeing the people in the neighborhood and watching them go about their business each day, a view of life in Cannes you can’t get from a hotel room.  For instance, from my balcony every day I see the same elderly lady with her small dog (“must have” accessory in Cannes), and rather than walking or carrying the dog, she opens a small umbrella stroller and he climbs up and in for his ride.  She then meets up across the street with another woman of a certain age and together they “walk” their dogs.  Only they have so much to discuss, that after 10 or 15 minutes, they’ve rarely made it all the way to the end of the block before they must part ways and get on with their day.  About that time, there’s another lady, again around the same age bracket, dressed each day as if she is having tea with the Queen, always stunning and well put together … from the front.  Once she walks by you see she has attached the most atrocious ratty hair piece to the back of her head, dangling from just a couple of ill-placed bobby pins and forever in danger of falling off.  To make matters worse, she has brown hair, and the hair piece is blond, bless her heart. You can’t help but wonder, has she never noticed the two don’t match? And wouldn’t she just be better off if it did fall off?  Or maybe she’s allergic to small dogs and this is her … no, that can’t be it.  And lastly there is the morning dove who must have a nest nearby and I hear every morning.  Generally I like the sound of morning doves, and as their name suggests, they only “sing” early in the morning.  This particularly bird however, is of the 24/7 variety.  Remember the Seinfeld episode when Elaine wanted to kill the bird out her window.  Bingo!

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

A trio of classic off-net sitcoms joins the lineup on WE tv as the network picked the non-exclusive cable rights to the complete libraries of Frasier from CBS Television Distribution; Roseanne from Carsey-Werner Television Distribution; and Will & Grace from Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution.  Frasier will premiere this Friday at 8p with stacked episodes airing each Friday night from 8p to 1a dubbed “Frasier Fridays” by WE tv.  Roseanne will roll-out in 2012 while Will & Grace will be added in 2013.

Starz Entertainment completed a new multi-year deal that extends and expands its affiliation agreement with Verizon FiOS TV.  Under the terms of the new deal, Verizon will continue to offer all Starz Entertainment’s roster of channels as well as its premium linear and hi-def channels, on demand, HD On Demand and online offerings.
