Cynopsis: Kids!

04/06/06

Good morning. It’s Thursday, April 6, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Disney has unveiled Disney Mobile, a family-targeted mobile virtual network operator, based in the US at Sprint PCS.  Disney Mobile will offer customizable tools that parents can use to manage their kids’ cell phone use, as well as when they can use the phone.  The phones also include a Family Locator feature that lets parents locate their kids’ phones via Global Positioning System, as well as the Family Alert service, which will make sure kids don’t miss the message from Mom and Dad.  On the kid side the Disney Mobile phones will feature cameras, messaging and the ever popular ringtones and other content.

STONE SOUP

The recipients of the 65th Annual Peabody Awards were announced yesterday by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. The Peabody Awards honor those in electronic media each year, recognizing distinguished achievement and meritorious public service by stations, networks, producing organizations and individuals.  The 65th Annual Peabody Awards will be handed out at a ceremony hosted by Jon Stewart, a two-time Peabody recipient, on June 5, 2006 at the Waldorf Astoria in NYC.  Recipients for programming targeted to kids, teens and young adults this year include:

  • A Place of Our Own (Los Ninon en Su Casa): A public-service project, designed to provide parents and child-care providers with information to help kindergarteners develop social, emotional and cognitive skills, featured in daily TV programs and websites in Spanish and English and 200+ bi-lingual outreach workshops. Produced by KCET LA in association with Sesame Workshop and 44 Blue Productions Inc.
  • Radio Rookies Project: Radio Rookies is a Public Radio initiative that provides teenagers with the tools and training to create radio stories about themselves, their communities and their world.  Produced by WNYC Radio/Radio Rookies.
  • Classical Baby HBO: HBO Family’s series that brings together animation and the music of Tchaikovsky, Bach and Ellington for kids and families.
  • Battlestar Galactica: Sci-Fi Channel’s re-imagined revival of the 1970s outer-space saga.  Produced by NBC Universal Television Studio.
