~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Nielsen Wire reports the average American home now has 2.93 television sets, a jump up from 2.86 TV sets per home in 2009. Overall, the number of homes with three or more TV sets has increased to 55%; while 28% have two sets and 17% have one set. Interestingly, the report cites that while the total population increases the number of people per TV home remains stable at 2.5, continuing the trend of more TVs per home than people.

Ricky Gervais will once again host the Golden Globes telecast. NBC announced Gervais will helm the 68th presentation, set to broadcast live on January 16.

Discovery Health US will air a special/pilot titled Enraged this Sunday at 10p that takes an intimate look at how rage affects millions of families in North America. The production was developed and produced by Toronto-based Lively Media and is a co-production with Discovery Health US and Canwest. The program will also debut on Canada’s TVtropolis on May 5 at 10p with a repeat airing on May 9 at 6p.

Logo’s season two finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race on Monday at 9p became the network’s highest-rated telecast by averaging a 0.8 rating with A18-49 and was Logo’s most-watched telecast ever with 633,000 total viewers. Furthermore at 10p, the season conclusion of Untucked averaged a 0.7 rating among A18-49 and the reunion episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race at 1030p also delivered a 0.7 rating with A18-49.

On Tuesday at 10p, MTV scored a 2.7 rating with P12-34 for the premiere of The Hills: Final Season along with more than 2.7 million total viewers. Following at 1030p, the new season of The City posted a 1.9 rating among P12-34 and 2.0 million total viewers.

2010 UPFRONT: National Geographic Channel

Through its branding, National Geographic Channel (NGC) invites viewers to “Live Curious” with its programming offerings for 2010-2011. NGC slots its programming into various thematic pillars such as Amazing Journeys,  Hooked, Dogs, Extreme Engineering, Sci-Tech, Adrenaline, Preserve Our Planet and Great Quests. NGC has six new series on tap:

  • Fish Warrior with Jakub Vagner – World-famous angler Jakub Vagner fishes in an unconventional manner. Under “Hooked” category; four one-hour episodes from Michael Hoff Productions.
  • Great Expeditions – Series explores the world’s mysteries for answers to some of history’s intriguing questions. Under “Amazing Journeys” category; four one-hour episodes.
  • Making History – A team comprised of Nat Geo historians and three filmmakers using one camera and a green screen re-create historical events using digital technology. Under “Amazing Journeys” category; four one-hour episodes from 360 Productions.
  • Monster Fish with Zeb Hogan – Freshwater fish conservationist, Zeb Hogan searches the depths for massive and endangered fish. Under “Hooked” category; seven one-hour episodes from NGT.
  • When Rome Ruled – Series offers new research on the Roman Empire. Under “Amazing Journeys” category; four one-hour episodes from Atlantic.
  • Wild Justice – Series follows game wardens as they patrol the West Coast wilderness areas. Under “Adrenaline” category; four one-hour episodes from Thom Beers’ Original Productions.

  • Alaska State Troopers – Under “Adrenaline” category; six one-hour episodes from PSG Films.
  • Border Wars – Under “Adrenaline” category; twelve one-hour episodes from NGT.

  • Secret Worlds – Series reveals exotic and remote places on earth along with its wildlife.
  • Swamp Men – Cameras follow park director, Ed Wood of the Billie Swamp Safari and his team as they manage the 2,200-acre camp.
  • Strike Force – The team at Venom Lab are called in by authorities to help with sharks and other marine wildlife when they threaten humans.
  • The Lion Ranger – Series follows behaviorist Kevin Richardson for nearly a year as he records his unusual relationship with lions in a South African nature park.
  • Wild Encounters – Series gets man closer to animals and the natural world.
  • Wild Nights with Mireya Mayor – Mayor and her team explore after dark in search of rarely seen, nocturnal wildlife in the alleys and streets.

Nat Geo WILD also has a slew of specials on its docket including two weeklong events: Big Cat Week and the Wild Heroes event.

  • Big Cat Week: specials include State of the Lions; A Tale of Two Kitties; and The Drought.
  • Wild Heroes: specials include Best of Nat Geo WILD Talent; and Ghosts of the Bush.
  • Expedition Wild with Casey Anderson: special follows naturalist Casey Anderson as he brings viewers closer to a cadre of new creatures.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Banijay International offers a new interactive reality format titled Dilemma to broadcasters worldwide. The reality series has contestants who are isolated from the outside world living together for eight weeks along with a show co-host. The winner will be the last person standing after facing a number of challenging personal dilemmas. The show is created in cooperation between Banijay’s core creative group and Alexia Laroche-Joubert, founder and MD of ALJ, part of the Banijay Entertainment Group. ALJ will produce the program. Dilemma is being sold as a stripped series and will premiere on M6’s digital terrestrial channel W9 in France on May 20. Dilemma will also air in a weekly primetime slot and be available via constant feed on DTH platform CanalSat.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

For its first scripted project, HISTORY has cast Greg Kinnear, Barry Pepper, Katie Holmes and Tom Wilkinson to star in the eight-hour miniseries The Kennedys. Kinnear headlines as President John F. Kennedy; Pepper will portray Attorney General Robert Kennedy; Holmes will play First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy; while Wilkinson will play Ambassador Joe Kennedy, Sr. Produced for HISTORY by Muse Entertainment in association with Asylum Entertain, The Kennedys will premiere on the network in 2011.

This fall, E! Entertainment Television launches the six-part television event What’s Eating You? (wt) taking an in-depth look at compulsive eating disorders. The series documents several patients in dire need of help and each undergoes an introductory therapy session with a medical professional to diagnose the severity of their individual problem. Each patient then begins a journey of recovery that is chronicled throughout the season. Produced by 3 Ball Productions, What’s Eating You? (wt) will premiere this October on E!.

Dr. Drew Pinsky, host of the Celebrity Rehab franchise on VH1 and MTV’s Sex … With Mom and Dad, has established Dr. Drew Productions headquartered in Los Angeles. The new production banner will target high quality reality TV projects featuring Dr. Drew in addition to other talent. The company has an initial project, a pilot titled Estranged with Dr. Drew, where couples decide if they wish to reunite or not. The project is being produced in association with Picture This Television based in New York.

Casting Call: Doron Ofir Casting launches the North East Casting for the docu-series Living Arrangements in cooperation with 495 Productions. The casting call seeks sons and daughters who are at least 25 years old and living with their parents. Tuesday  A18-49 Analysis: FOX was rock steady Tuesday night delivering a 6.0/16 with A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. American Idol on FOX swept past the competition at 8p with a 6.9/20 and CBS’ NCIS was #2 with 3.5/10. FOX happily remained in the lead through 9p with Glee at 5.2/13 while CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles and NBC’s The Biggest Loser tied for second place at 3.2/8 apiece. NBC took a turn at #1 during 10p with Parenthood at 2.4/7 with CBS’ The Good Wife next in line with 2.2/6.

BBC Worldwide Productions hired former AMC VP/Production, Series and Movies executive Vlad Wolynetz to become SVP/Scripted Production beginning in May. Additionally, BBC Worldwide Productions employed Hugh Fitzpatrick as VP/Scripted Programming who joined from William Morris Endeavor earlier this month. Vlad and Hugh will be part of the company’s scripted team under the supervision of Julie Gardner, SVP/Scripted and Executive Producer, to whom both will report. Vlad and Hugh are charged with increasing the studio’s scripted slate, working with top-drawer US writers and UK creative talent.

ABC Family

Zander Lurie steps into the role as SVP/Strategic Development with the CBS Corporation. This appointment will give Zander strategic planning oversight across the company in addition to being at the forefront of CBS’ future content efforts. Zander previously served as EVP/CFO of CBS Interactive since CBS acquired CNET Networks in June 2008. Zander will continue in this position until a successor is named in addition to remaining in charge of business development at CBS Interactive. He will report to Joseph Ianniello, EVP/CFO, CBS Corporation.

The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) tapped Shirley Powell as EVP/Corporate Communications. She comes from Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. where she served as SVP/Corporate Communications. In her new position at TWCC, Shirley will be the chief spokesperson and work to develop and execute internal and external public relations and communications strategies across multiple platforms. Based in Atlanta, Shirley will report to Michael J. Kelly, CEO and will additionally be a member of the company’s senior executive team.
