Members of the Writers Guild of America, East and Writers Guild of America, West jointly ratified a new three-year agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.  The combined East and West WGA members voted 90.7% in favor of the new deal which goes into effect May 2, 2011 through May 1, 2014.  The contract includes increases in contributions to the WGA pension plan, boosting reuse payments in Pay TV as well as increasing minimums. 

In a move marking a first-time cross-over promotion between NBC and a Comcast cable channel, NBC will air the two-part season finale of G4’s American Ninja Warrior extreme obstacle course series.  The third season ender of American Ninja Warrior will air this fall following the season’s return on G4 in August. 

Five young women aspiring to make it big in the music industry are the centerpiece of MTV’s new series The Electric Barbarellas, debuting May 4 at 11p.  The five women live, work and play together in this docu-series which chronicles how this all-girl band came together and strives for stardom throughout the six episodes.  Go Go Luckey Entertainment and Outrageous Entertainment produces the series.

Lifetime Television is following up its Lifetime Movie Original Natalee Holloway with a second Original Movie and a ten-episode series, Vanished with Beth Holloway.  The Lifetime Original Movie, Justice for Natalee Holloway premieres May 9 at 8p and the true-life series, Vanished with Beth Holloway also debuts the same night at 10p.  The one-hour docu-series examines real-life mysteries involving families who have been victimized by abductions, disappearances and other horrific crimes. Beth Holloway is involved with the series offering an empathetic perspective to the loved ones of the victim.  

A new scripted comedy series on VH1 explores what single women really want in a relationship when Single Ladies premieres June 6 at 9p.  The ten-episode one-hour series follows a two-hour movie event sporting the same name debuting on VH1 May 30 at 9p.  VH1 and Queen Latifah’s Flavor Unit Entertainment are behind the projects and marks the first time the network ventures into a one-hour scripted series.  Stacey Dash, LisaRaye McCoy and Charity Shea star as three best friends living and working in Atlanta with different views on relationships. In addition, Kassandra Clementi also stars and becomes part of the ladies’ circle.  

Spike TV renewed its first-ever original scripted comedy series, Blue Mountain State for a third season with 13 episodes.  Blue Mountain State is about the on- and off-field activities of the college football team at Blue Mountain State led by Coach Daniels (Ed Marinaro).  Denise Richards will also be back reprising her role as Daniels’ attractive though sharp-tongued ex-wife.  The series is produced by Varsity Pictures. 

Captain Paul Watson and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society take to the Antarctic high seas as a fourth season of Whale Wars opens June 3 at 9p on Animal Planet.  Ten new episodes document the Sea Shepherds’ ongoing campaign to halt Japanese ships from hunting whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.  The series is from Lizard Trading Company.

Logo’s third season finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race Monday at 10p posted a 0.8 among A18-49 and 585,000 total viewers.  The concluding episode ended the highest-rated season for Logo ever. Also at 11p, the season finale of Untucked: RuPaul’s Drag Race delivered a 0.4 with A18-49.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

CBS Television Distribution is prepping to sell the rerun rights of CBS’ Undercover Boss series to cable buyers though with an added half-hour along with each one-hour episode, cites Variety.  The extra half-hour will feature updates to the CEOs and employees along with never-before-seen footage.  Undercover Boss is from Studio Lambert.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Actress/producer/director Demi Moore signed an agreement with Lifetime Television involving multiple projects including the new one-hour interview series, The Conversation.  Hosted by British television personality and well-known photographer, Amanda de Cadenet, The Conversation offers a fresh and intimate perspective on celebrity interviews with famous women and is based on de Cadenet’s web series. Eight episodes of The Conversation will be produced by decadenet, Inc. with Moore and de Cadenet serving as executive producers along with Rob Sharenow, Gena McCarthy and David Hillman of Lifetime Television.  Andrew Fried will also co-executive produce The Conversation.  Beyond The Conversation, Moore will also develop two other scripted dramas for Lifetime and serve as executive producer.

HBO’s upcoming telepic Game Change cast Sarah Paulson to play John McCain’s senior campaign adviser Nicolle Wallace and Peter MacNicol as the senator’s campaign manager Rick Davis.  Melissa Farman was also cast as Bristol Palin.  All three join Ed Harris and Julieanne Moore who were previously cast as Senator John McCain and Sarah Palin.

NBC’s Saturday Night Live regular Jason Sudeikis will host the 2011 MTV Movie Awards, marking his first award show hosting gig.  The MTV Movie Awards will air live June 5 at 9p, broadcasting from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis:   NBC hit the right note Tuesday night among A18-49 by delivering a 4.3/11, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  FOX sang on key during 8p with Glee at 3.4/10 with NBC’s The Biggest Loser in #2 at 2.6/8.  NBC’s debut of new competition series The Voice won the 9p hour with a 4.9/13 outpacing ABC’s Dancing with the Stars Results Show at 3.6/9.  The second hour of The Voice’s premiere on NBC surged during 10p to a 5.4/14 with ABC’s Body of Proof next at 2.2/6.  For its two-hour opening episode, NBC’s The Voice also attracted 11.8 million total viewers.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Tom Morrissey elevated to SVP/Design with Fox Broadcasting Company to head the creative design strategy involved with FOX’s programming and branding across multiple platforms.  Tom will report directly to Joe Earley, President/Marketing and Communications.  Tom will additionally have several executives reporting to him including Justin Owens, VP/Broadcasting Design; Brian Salay, VP/Digital Design; and Julius Preite, VP/Animation Design. 

Paula Trafford named Head/Popular Factual and Features with KEO films.  In her new position, Paula works in tandem with Creative Director Andrew Palmer on the company’s factual content. Previously, Paula worked for Scarlet Television.

Young Broadcasting, LLC tapped Board member Tony Cassara as CEO following a recent restructuring of the company’s senior management staff. Deborah McDermott continues as President of Young Broadcasting, LLC with all ten stations reporting to her.  Furthermore, Tom Sullivan was elected Board Chair, replacing former CEO Vincent Young. 

Bob Shaw advances to SVP/Eastern Region, Advertising Sales with Spotlight Cinema Networks.  Before his promotion, Bob was VP/Eastern Region, Advertising Sales.

Paul McGonagle employed as VP/News Director of WFXT FOX25 in Boston part of The Fox Television Stations group, effective immediately.  Paul will direct all editorial, business and administrative activities for the station where he reports to Gregg Kelley, VP/GM. 

Chicago-based African American marketing agency Burrell Communications hired four new executives:

  • Robert Clifton rejoins the agency as VP/Executive Creative Director working mainly on the McDonald’s and Toyota accounts.  He recently was EVP/Executive Creative Director at Campbell Mithun.
  • Karen McDowell added as VP/Group Account Director involved with the Procter & Gamble Pantene, Crest and Clairol Professional brands.  Lately, Karen was Director/Marketing and Communications at DentaQuest.
  • Maria Moffitt hired as VP/Group Account Director for the Olay, CoverGirl, My Black Is Beautiful and My Home Made Beautiful accounts.  She joins from LattimerMoffitt Communications in Atlanta where she was Principal.
  • Sharon Ali becomes an Account Director working with the General Mills team in a newly-created role.  Sharon will be involved with the Grands!, Yoplait and Feeding Dreams brands.  She previously worked for Quaker Foods and Beverages, a unit of PepsiCo as Director/Merchandising Solutions.
