CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

04/28/05

Good morning.  It’s Thursday, April 28, 2005, the first day of the May 2005 sweep, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Like any good President of the United States, George Bush has planned a press conference during the May sweeps.  Happens every year.  The only problem is, this time the President gave the networks little more than 24 hours notice, with the press conference scheduled for this evening at 830p.  No word at this writing regarding broadcast network coverage, and among the cablers Fox News is the only one to have it posted on their online schedule already.  The rub is simple – all but two networks will be in the middle of 60m or 120m programming at 830p, and most of that is original pgming; Thursday is always big night for CBS and NBC; and gobbles of ad dollars will need to be managed.

Fox has given the official “go” for a second season of Nanny 911 (Granada America) with an order for 13 more eps.

NBC has announced a handful of new limited series offerings slated for this summer – primarily reality shows.  According to Variety, returning series include Average Joe (June 28 at 8p) and The Biggest Loser (August 9).  New to the schedule are:

  • I Want to be a Hilton (June 21) with 14 participants who all want to live like Paris Hilton. This show will air on Tuesdays at 9-10p (following a 2-hour premiere ep)
  • The Law Firm (June 27) marks David E. Kelley’s foray into the world of unscripted series with lawyers fighting amongst themselves, from Renegade 83, DEK Prods and 20th.
  • Meet Mister Mom (August 3 at 8p) focuses on two families where the mom has gone off for a spa week, and dad is now in charge.  The two dads compete to see who can run the household more efficiently, with various twists thrown in their paths.
  • Tommy Lee Goes to College (August 9 at 930p) follows Tommy Lee as he attends classes at University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

Tonight’s Premieres:
Biography Channel:  What’s Next at 11p; Hollywood’s Best 10 at 1130p  (not last night)

* NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

Comedy Central has ordered up 39 episodes of a late night D. L. Hughley talk show to air on Fri-Sun evenings at 11p, produced by Robert Morton.  The show’s working title is Weekends at the D.L., scheduled to kick off with a 13 week stint, beginning this summer. Comedy Central is also considering several different projects for the post-The Daily Show with Jon Stewart time period, Mon-Thurs, with no official decision at this point.

Branded Media Corporation has signed a deal with chefs Pino Luongo and Mark Strausman to develop a new cooking series based on the chefs’ nickname: The Two Meatballs. The project and its brand extensions will reflect the duo’s passion for cooking and creativity while dishing out stories reflecting their irreverent relationship, knowledge and humor.

BBC and HBO are teaming up to co-produce a new sitcom titled Extras. The first 6 episodes are being produced and are set to air on the BBC2 in the summer.  The series will also launch on HBO, though a date has not yet been announced.  Extras focuses on this group of actors (extras) and how they keep themselves entertained between takes.   The show will also have celeb cameos appearing as themselves including Samuel L Jackson, Vinnie Jones, Patrick Stewart, Ben Stiller and Kate Winslet.

  • Grown Men (Sony Pictures Television) has cast Ion Overman opposite Dean Cain as Cain’s wife. The show is about a group of frat brothers who get together 13 years after they’ve graduated from college.  Dan Cortese, John DiMaggio, Mitch Rouse and John Ducey make up the rest of the cast.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Turner Broadcasting System has unveiled plans to launch GameTap, a broadband subscription video games-on-demand service, set to bow fall 2005.  In advance of the launch, TBS has licensed more than 1,000 games from 17 publishers, and plans to initially offer 300 game titles, and then rolling out new titles each week. Subscribers will need to download and install Turners GameTap client software (http://www.gametap.com/), which will allow them unlimited access to the gaming library of available titles.

The weekly syndicated series Designers, Fashions & Runways from Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios is kicking off six new episodes to air during the May sweep, featuring a half dozen top designers including Perry Ellis, Frankie B and Monique L’huillier. Clearances for the series for next season thus far include KNBC/LA; KMWB/Minneapolis; KTVK/Phoenix, WISH/Indianapolis; CN8/Philadelphia and CN8/Boston.

Following the worldwide open of Warner Bros.’ movie, Batman Begins on June 15, the Batman film will be the title sponsor of the NASCAR Nextel Cup, retitled as Batman Begins 400, marking the first time that a feature film has served as the title sponsor for this race. Held at Michigan International Speedway, the race will be carried live on Fox, June 19.  The Batman Begins 400 will feature the Batmobile (the one from the movie) as the pace car, and set up for attendees will be the the Batman Begins Fan Zone which will included race car driver Mark Martin’s Batman Begins themed car, merchandise based on the movie and the Batman Begins 400 race, as well as themed activities.

Casting callFix My Husband is a new primetime series for ABC in which three wives send their husbands to be re-educated on various points that will ultimately enhance their marriages and their lives. We’re looking for guys who have forgotten about romance, are more interested in sports than your birthday, comfortable enough that his appearance has gone a little to his waist. Casting coming up in the NY area. If you’re interested, please contact: Debbie & Lisa Ganz, 917-374-7614 or 917-678-9996,
or
  Good luck!
