Good morning, it’s Thursday, April 26, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

After joining The View less than a year ago, Rosie O’Donnell has decided to depart the ABC talk show in mid-June after she and the network failed to agree on a new contract. Apparently, ABC wanted to confirm a three-year deal with Rosie but she only wanted to lock in another 12 months. Since Rosie became a co-host, The View gained a new-found ratings boost and buzz. Ratings for the show during this past February sweeps increased by 15% with various women demos over the previous year. On yesterday’s show, Rosie said she will still appear on The View on occasion. Creator and co-executive producer Barbara Walters, will now have the task to find her replacement.

FOX has unveiled its May Sweeps series season finales:
May 16 – Bones at 8p
May 19 – MADtv at 11p and Talkshow with Spike Feresten at 12a
May 20 – King of the Hill (one-hour episode) at 7p and The Simpsons (one-hour 400th episode special) at 8p, Family Guy at 9p and American Dad at 930p
May 21 – 24 at 8p (two-hours)
May 22 – American Idol (last performance show) at 8p and series preview of On the Lot at 9p
May 23 – American Idol (two-hour last results show) at 8p
May 29 – House at 9p

What you don’t see on this list is Fox’s newest series DRIVE, which has already had its finale after just four episodes. The show averaged a slim 2.3/6 A18-49 in its short life, with the most recent on Monday night delivering a paltry 1.5/5.   Filling the Monday 8p time period, repeats of House.

The History Channel’s premiere of its new series Cities of the Underworld, with an episode focusing on Edinburgh, Scotland on April 23 (9-10p) captured 1.53 million total viewers, making it the most-watched premiere in the network’s history.

NBC’s daytime soap Passions must have nine lives as the show will be resurrected for a ninth season. Once the show ends its eighth season on NBC September 7, with many cliffhangers still dangling, the story lines will continue when new episodes begin on DIRECTV starting September 17. Under a new agreement, NBC Universal Studio will produce the new episodes that will air Monday-Thursday on DIRECTV’s original programming channel, The 101 at 2pm ET. DIRECTV will also air encore marathons of the show each weekend. Most of Passions’ cast and crew are expected to return when the series begins shooting the new installments in August. And, what about those fans who are not customers of the satellite provider? DIRECTV will offer free installation, a DVR or HD receiver upgrade and a portable DVD player available at 866-788-0003 or through their web site at www.directv.com/passions.

GSN will return the World Series of Blackjack IV to its line-up on June 4 at 11p. The tournament will use the Las Vegas Hilton as its base and players qualified from sanctioned casinos and tournaments will join a cache of celebrities including Orel Hershiser, Penn Jillette, Shannon Elizabeth and Caroline Rhea. The final player will win $500,000.

Nielsen has released updated information pertaining to digital video recorder (DVR) use in the U.S. Based on the latest Nielsen Universe Estimates, 17.2% of U.S. television households have a DVR. And, starting next month, Nielsen will begin reporting DVR Universe Estimates (UEs) for the National People Meter sample and for all local TV markets. Initial “timeshifted” ratings information on a live + 7 days basis showed House and Lost to be the most popular among DVR users. House gained additional 2.74 million viewers on April 3 while Lost pulled in an additional 2.47 million. The Office showed the highest gain on a percentage basis, picking up more than 31% more viewers. DVR numbers will be computed using the installed National People Meter sample. The DVR universe now accounts for 17.2% of U.S. homes. Additionally in May, Nielsen will disseminate Digital Cable UEs for Local People Meter and Area Probability Meter markets and DVD UEs in all local markets.

Shalom TV launches on Comcast cable systems in Baltimore and Washington, DC as of May 3, bringing the Jewish programming to over one million households in Southern Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia.  The move also doubles the size of Shalom TV’s current carriage footprint in Philadelphia, the Poconos, and Northern Delaware.  Comcast is providing digital cable customers in the new Shalom TV markets with free access to the S

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Alec Baldwin reportedly had requested to be let out of his contract with NBC’s 30 Rock to work on his personal and parental situation.  NBC declined.  Some would argue it’s Baldwin that makes the show, and NBC says it’s “looking forward to having him continue his role.”  30 Rock has already received its renewal for next season.

CYNOPSIS EMAILS TO THE EDITOR:

RE: News outlets showing Virginia Tech shooter’s video
(Final day of this Email thread)

4/25:

For me, another most disturbing moment came the afternoon of the shootings themselves. It was the abject irresponsibility of abcnews.com.  I was glued to the net since I live in VA and have friend’s with kids attending VA Tech.

I was listening to an interview with a kid that was in Prof. Liviu Librescu’s class at about 2p or so.  The kid had jumped out of a window as did two other students to escape.  He was asked about the other students and the teacher.  This isn’t a direct quote, but he basically said that his teacher had been shot in the face and killed.  He learned this through talking/texting to other students in the class after the event.  And then the interviewer asked who his teacher was and the kid said Prof. Liviu Librescu.  This was long before any other victims had been identified.  It was long before the poor man’s family could have been notified.  The interview was 8 and a half minutes.

It could have been cut off before the man’s name was mentioned. It was the last question of the interview.  There was no need to announce the man’s name at the time. Besides the fact that there had been no possible confirmation or corroboration, even though it was true, it couldn’t have been confirmed at that time.  The insensitivity to the situation and the victims’ families, the lack of professional ethics, and overwhelming need to get “the get” was appalling.  Abcnews.com should be ashamed of themselves.

–Jane Hurst

I have to agree with Jody in Germany.  If we truly want to be an informed public there has to be both sides aired.  What bothers me the most is that people don’t want to see or know what this deranged individual said, it’s bad enough he did what he did.  What happened to questioning authority?  Should we just take the CNN, FOX, NBC, ABC, CBS, MSNBC perspective as gospel?

–Linda Tracy
