Good morning. It’s Thursday, April 25, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Mad Men’s Jon Hamm is the new host of the 2013 ESPYS, with the announcement made during Hamm’s appearance LIVE with Kelly and Michael yesterday. The 2013 ESPYS will be televised live Wednesday, July 17, at 9p on ESPN/ESPNHD from Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles. Voting for balloted categories will run June 28th through July 17 at 9p.
As expected, ESPN officially named SportsCenter anchor Lindsay Czarniak as the new host for the Indianapolis 500 telecast on ABC on Sunday, May 26. In addition, the company announced that former Indianapolis 500 winner Eddie Cheever will broaden his role as for ESPN’s coverage of the IZOD IndyCar Series to work in the broadcast booth for all six races that will air on ABC this season. Meanwhile, Czarniak will be positioned on Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s Pagoda during ABC’s one-hour Indianapolis 500 pre-race show at 11a and will also contribute to the race telecast. Coverage will also include pit reporters Rick DeBruhl, Jamie Little and Vince Welch with Dr. Jerry Punch joining as a fourth pit reporter for the Indianapolis 500.
With a new name locked down, the very first championship game in the College Football Playoff will take place at Cowboys Stadium. Multiple reports state that the Arlington, TX venue bested Tampa in the bidding process and that game will take place on Jan. 12, 2015.
Meanwhile, after delaying the announcement of the upcoming SEC network due to the Boston bombings, the league and ESPN have now rescheduled the announcement to take place on Thursday, May 2 at noon.
Golf Channel announced that famed swimmer-turned-golfer Michael Phelps will face a surprise “Gold Medal Showdown” on the golf course with a foursome of former Olympic gold medalists on the season finale of The Haley Project on Monday at 9p. The guest list will include the likes of boxer Sugar Ray Leonard and former decathlete Bruce Jenner as well as hockey player Mike Eruzione and two-time snowboarding gold medalist Seth Wescott.
FOX-owned regional sports channel Sun Sports set a new, all-time ratings record on the network for the playoff game between the Heat and Bucks on Sunday with a 15.6 household rating average, according to Nielsen, in the South Florida DMA. The easily bests the previous all-time ratings record of a 12.2 score set earlier this year when the Heat beat the Boston Celtics on March 18.
There is a new voice of the Patriots, with CBS Radio-owned station 98.5 The Sports Hub naming Bob Socci as the new play-by-play voice for Patriots broadcasts. Socci replaces Gil Santos, who retired after last season after 36 years.

The NBA delivered the next chapter of its “Now is BIG” campaign last night, when the spot We Are All Watching: Westbook was revealed during TNT’s coverage of the Thunder and Rockets last night. The second NBA Playoff 2013 “BIG” spot showcases fans from Buenos Aires to Beijing watching the Thunder’s Russell Westbrook in a pivotal Game 5 against the Lakers in the 2012 Western Conference Finals, as Westbrook intercepts a pass meant for Kobe Bryant before racing down the court where he is fouled and nails a spectacular shot that led to the win.
Meanwhile, Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw is the newest subject of ESPN’s This is SportsCenter campaign featuring Kershaw tossing pencils toward the ceiling of his cube at ESPN headquarters, which makes SportsCenter anchor Jay Harris uncomfortable in cube above him. Wieden + Kennedy New York served as the creative agency for the spot.
UFC star Ronda Rousey has added another product to her list of endorsements, inking a deal with energy drink brand Xyience. The 26-year-old MMA fighter will appear in print and online advertising and on point-of-purchase materials for the Las Vegas-based brand, which is also the official energy drink of the UFC.
The first Pro Gymnastics Challenge, which features current and future male and female gymnasts competing in a skill vs. skill challenge pitting men against women, announced that Dominique Moceanu will serve as a judge for the freshmen event on May 10 and 11, 2013 at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, PA.
CBSSports.com is poised to offer a second screen experience for this week’s NFL Draft, offering the digital series Draft Show Live online and on the CBS Sports mobile app through all three days of the event. The show is sponsored by Cadillac and will offer viewers two ways to engage with CBSSports.com’s Draft coverage, with one offering a lineup of analysts including who will offer insights, commentary and opinions about the Draft, while a second team of experts offers social insights and buzz from Twitter and Facebook.
Balloting is off and running the 84th All-Star Game on July 16 at Citi Field, as MLB launched the 2013 All-Star Game MLB.com Ballot, sponsored by freecreditscore.com, online. Last year’s voting produced a record-shattering 40.2 million ballots cast. Fans can vote for starting position players online or by mobile device until 11:59 p.m. ET on July 4.
Production & Technology
The launch of FOX Sports 1 will feature the channel utilizing the Dalet Sports Factory and its production and MAM system for the upcoming national network. Dalet Sports Factory announced that it would provide the MAM under layer that will manage the channel’s workflow and content with Dalet Brio servers used for nearly a hundred channels of video input.
The Main Event
NFL Draft on ESPN and NFL Network at 8p.
