~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Comedy Central ordered seven additional episodes of its animated comedy series Ugly Americans which will premiere this October. The series debuted March 17 with 2.1 million total viewers and since then, its first season has averaged 2.0 million total viewers. Ugly Americans also ranks as the #2 show on Wednesdays nights among M18-24 behind its lead-in South Park. Animation is produced by Augenblick Studios and Cuppa Coffee.

Food Network announced the sixth edition of The Next Food Network Star will premiere June 6 at 9p with a two-hour episode. Set in Los Angeles, the new season will follow 12 aspiring finalists as they compete for a chance to have their own Food Network show. Bobby Flay will host the new season with Giada De Laurentiis providing mentorship to the dozen competitors. The finale on August 15 at 9p will reveal the winner who will go on to produce a six-episode show premiering in August. The Next Food Network Star is produced by CBS EYE too Productions.

HISTORY opens its 12-hour series America The Story of Us with a special introduction from President Obama this Sunday at 9p. The President’s remarks will encourage viewers to learn and be involved in shaping our history. Airing on Sunday nights through Memorial Day, the series spans 400 years of American history. In addition to airing on HISTORY, the series includes an extensive educational component where the full series will be made available on DVD to every school and accredited college in the US among other initiatives. America The Story of Us is produced by Nutopia for HISTORY. 

NBC is carrying the frosh game show Minute to Win It into the summer months as the network is bringing it back starting July 7 and airing a combination of new and repeat episodes through September 8. Even though the game show has aired mainly on Sunday nights, NBC plans on placing Minute to Win It as a lead-in for its reality talent competition show America’s Got Talent on Wednesday nights.

HGTV:

New HGTV primetime series:

  • Selling New York  Weekly series offers a look inside the high-stakes world of buying and selling luxury properties in Manhattan. Airs on Thursdays at 9p.
  • Battle on the Block  Weekly series where three neighborhood families battle in an intense 72-hour design competition to create the best design for their own home. Designer Genevieve Gorder hosts and gives each family help with one winning a $100,000 cash prize and neighborhood bragging rights. Airs Sundays at 10p.

Returning primetime series on HGTV:

  • Holmes on Homes  Contractor Mike Holmes uncovers shoddy construction practices and rip-offs in this improvement series where Mike and his crew rescues the homeowners and shows how the bad project should have been carried out. Airs Wednesdays at 9p.
  • HGTV Design Star  Design reality competition series is back for a fifth season produced by Mark Burnett Productions. Hour-long series will air for 11 weeks beginning June 13 at 10p through August 29.
  • The Antonio Treatment  Season four champ of HGTV Design Star, Antonio Ballatore returns with his unconventional take on design offering transformations on homes, offices, restaurants and more. Series re-launches August 8 at 11p.

TRAVEL CHANNEL:

This upfront season marks the first for the Travel Channel to be recognized as a Scripps Networks channel. Travel Channel presents several new series for 2010-2011:

  • Bert The Conqueror  Series journeys with ordinary guy, Bert Kreischer as he explores America’s pastimes and thrilling activities such as the massive Cedar Point roller coasters to fishing with the locals in Tennessee.
  • Three In a Bed  This new series will follow three couples who own bed and breakfast inns that agree to stay in each other’s homes to sample the food and the others’ operations. Each will pay what they think is a fare price for the experience and the one closest to the published price is declared the winner. Series premieres 4Q 2010.
  • Best Places Ever  Popular Travel Channel personalities including Samantha Brown, Adam Richman, Andrew Zimmern and more will offer their tips and advice on where to go around the world.
  • Samantha Brown’s Africa  Travel Channel’s most recognized personality is back with a new series exploring the riches of the African continent where she explores Moroccan palaces, Egyptian pharaohs’ tombs to spotting wildlife on the Serengeti and tribal customs in South Africa.
  • Samantha Brown’s Great Hotels  Samantha is in search of the best places to stay from villas in Italy to hotels with Michelin star-rated restaurants.
  • Samantha Brown’s Great Cruises  Samantha is back in a third new series where she sails aboard the world’s most luxurious cruise ships.

Travel Channel returning series include: Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern in 2011; Man v. Food; Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations; and Food Wars with 12 new episodes returning in early 2011.

HISTORY is prepping a 10-episode US version of Top Gear, the popular, award-winning BBC series. Production begins immediately by BBC Worldwide Productions, highlighting a cadre of automobiles and driving techniques. The new series will debut on HISTORY this fall, hosted by comedian Adam Ferrara; champion rally and drift racer Tanner Foust; and racing analyst Rutledge Wood. The series will sport super-cars, stunts and challenges, car reviews and celebrity interviews.

Dr. Eduardo Pagan, professor of history and American studies at Arizona State University is joining the PBS series History Detectives as a permanent co-host. Dr. Pagan began as a guest host on the series during the summer of 2009. He joins other co-hosts who have been part of the series for seven seasons: independent appraiser and auctioneer, Wes Cowan; independent appraiser and art history expert, Elyse Luray; professor of history/architecture, Columbia University, Gwendolyn Wright; professor of sociology and director of the Center for African Studies, University of Pennsylvania, Tukufu Zuberi. History Detectives is co-produced by UK-based Lion Television and Oregon Public Broadcasting.

Tuesday  A18-49 Analysis: Even though FOX may have taken a bit of a ratings dip compared to the previous week, the network still led Tuesday night at 6.1/16 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. FOX stood out in the crowd at 8p with American Idol in the lead with 6.9/20 while the next nearest competitor, NBC’s The Biggest Loser was less than half as much at 3.0/8. FOX followed up with another win at 9p as Glee delivered a 5.3/13 and NBC’s The Biggest Loser placed second again at 3.8/10 with ABC’s Lost close in third at 3.7/10. NBC won the 10p time period with Parenthood at 2.9/8 with ABC’s V next at 2.2/6.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Tribune Broadcasting’s WGN America elevated Kevin Connor to the position of SVP/Affiliate Sales, effective immediately. Previously, Kevin was the network’s VP/Finance and Administration since 2008. Kevin will continue to be based at WGN America’s New York office and will report to Julio Marenghi, EVP/Sales and Distribution.

Gareth Williams was promoted to SVP/Content and Production, South America with BBC Worldwide. In his new role, Gareth will work closely with top South American production companies that BBC Worldwide has exclusive production relationships, such as GP Media in Argentina and Mixer in Brazil. Gareth will head development, pitching and implementation of new format projects in the South American region. He will continue to report to the VP/International Production based in London.

Effective immediately, Dana Ortiz advanced to VP/Brand Marketing with Syfy, reporting to Blake Callaway, SVP/Marketing, Brand and Strategic. Dana will now supervise all off channel marketing efforts, events and promotions in addition to the on-air marketing group. Dana is located at Syfy’s New York office.
