And on a side note … some notable things about the MIPTV Market … As mentioned before, I’m infinitely trainable when it comes to travel and such, and here are a few things I have learned on my short trip to Cannes.

  • Save your feet. We’ve all heard this before, and wearing a brand-new never-worn pair of shoes to any convention or market is a complete rookie error. But what I learned was we women can also leave the heels at home.  I’m told if a guy is looking at your feet, there’s a problem above.  And women – we will always look at your feet (and be jealous if you’re wearing flats!).  So leave the beautiful heels at home.
  • There are some cultures which allow you to freely and discreetly advise someone they have an entire broccoli floret stuck in their front teeth.  There are others which do not.  Learn the difference and adhere to those rules very strictly.
  • Anyone traveling to a gathering such as MIPTV with their mother – and brings her to his meetings – well, that’s an interesting character and one you may find will be fun to know for a long time.  Of course, this is not a hard and fast rule as the completely opposite may apply. Just know it will definitely be one end of the pendulum or the other. There is no in between.
  • A person’s level of humor at a market like this is directly tied to the length of stay.  Wise cracks and one liners in the first few days can be hysterical … by the end of the week, not so much.
  • And finally, as advised by many people yesterday, if you drop your Blackberry in a puddle of water, or wine for that matter, the best course is to turn it off, wipe it off, pull it apart and submerge all the pieces into a bag of dry rice where you’ll leave it for the next 12 hours.  People swear by this one.  I’ll take rice with me next time I travel to Cannes – thanks to all who sent this advice in to me!

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Si TV acquired the series Prison Break from Twentieth Television, launching the series next Monday. Si TV targets 18-34-year old Latinos who prefer to watch programs in English. Prison Break ran on FOX from 2005-2009.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

VH1, expanding its sports wives franchise that started with Basketball Wives, is now highlighting the behind-the-scenes lives of professional football player’s spouses in the new eight-episode series Football Wives from Shed Media. The half-hour series follows spouses of top players who live a posh lifestyle though the career of their football player husbands are often curtailed due to injury. Football Wives will premiere later in 2010.

Grey Damon joins the cast of drama series Friday Night Lights playing East Dillon High basketball player Hastings Ruckle. The show’s fifth season is currently in production in Austin. NBC will premiere the fourth season of Friday Night Lights with 13 episodes starting May 7 at 8p while season five premieres this fall on DirecTV’s The 101 Network.

Sophia Bush (One Tree Hill) was cast in ABC’s family comedy pilot Southern Discomfort, playing Haley, a new Harvard grad who returns to her Texas hometown to reunite with a former boyfriend. Don Johnson and Mary Steenburgen have already been cast in the roles of Haley’s parents. Sony Pictures Television, Tantamount and ABC Studios are producing this multi-camera comedy. This casting deal is in second position for Bush who still remains on the roster of The CW’s One Tree Hill for next season.

CMT okayed a new reality dance competition show from producer Phil Gurin who also executive produces The Singing Bee for CMT, cites THR. Get Up and Dance is a 60m format that showcases video clips of people around the country doing their versions of famous dance routines. Then the same amateur contestants, whether they are individuals, couples or groups, will perform these same dance routines in front of a live studio audience.

AMC cast additional series regulars for its drama pilot The Killing about a police investigation into the murder of a young girl, reports THR. Michelle Forbes and Brent Sexton have been cast at Mitch and Stanley, the victim’s parents; Eric Ladin will play Jamie, the campaign manager to a mayoral candidate (Billy Campbell); Jamie Anne Allman will play Mitch’s younger sister; and Joel Kinnaman was tagged as Holder, an ex-narc cop.
