Good morning. It’s Thursday, April 12, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

If it weren’t bad enough that my kids are now making fun of me for not hearing what they say, the way I have done the same to my Mom for years (but it’s true in her case … umm, really), Kentucky Fried Chicken is trying to make me crazy with its new TV ad campaign for the new family targeted KFC Boneless Variety Bucket.  The ads employ the MosquitoTone.  Eh? What’s that?  The MosquitoTone is a high frequency tone “allegedly” heard by just segments of the population, which is to say kids can hear it, but adults … not so much.  Anyhow, the tone has been embedded in the ads and KFC is challenging viewers to guess where the sound is during the ad.  I’ve been thinking if I spray some bug spray at the TV maybe the ads will just go away, or hello Tivo.

DIC Entertainment has set up a Global Brand Management division that will shepherd specific brand efforts across the company and with outside partners.  Overseeing the Global Brand Management group is Nancy Fowler, Head of Global Sales.  She will also continue to lead DIC’s domestic and international consumer products, TV, home entertainment and marketing divisions.

Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) has introduced its anime channel, Animax, to Europe, with the re-branding of A+ to Animax.  A+, acquired last year by SPTI, targeted the P15-29 in Hungary, Romania, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Animax in Europe will get an on-air makeover and continue run much of the programming A+ aired. SPTI is also negotiating for additional Animax launches in the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and France.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

CBS and DIC Entertainment unveiled the 2007-08 programming slate for the three-hour Saturday morning kid centric block on CBS.  The new programming lineup is comprised of six series, which will feature the new animated series including Care Bears, Sushi Pack, I Was a High School Dinosaur and making its broadcast TV debut, Strawberry Shortcake.  Rounding out the block are returning shows CAKE and Horseland.  Care Bears series will feature new episodes that includes a current day take on the property, which by the way turns 25 this year.  Sushi Pack, a comedy, revolves around five crime-fighting pieces of sushi.  I Was A High School Dinosaur; the show follows five off-beat teens who suddenly gain the power to transform into dinosaurs.

Director Karey Kirkpatrick (Over The Hedge, The Spiderwick Chronicles) has inked a two-year, first look deal with Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films, under his new production company, Blue Shirt Productions, per Variety.  The deal includes live-action family centric movies, as Kirkpatrick’s exclusive animation pact with DreamWorks remains in tact.  His first project under the deal is Captain Abdul’s Pirate School, an adaptation of author Colin McNaughton’s book of the same name.  He co-wrote the script with Chris Poche and Clare Sera.

MORE KIDS STUFF

kajeet, a tween aimed pay-as-you go mobile service, has inked a content deal, its first, with Nickelodeon.  Under the pact, kajeet will offer ringtones, wallpapers and games all based on the network’s animated series.  On the flip side, kajeet will serve as a sponsor for several Nickelodeon TV events, beginning this week with the special SpongeBob episode, SpongeBob SquarePants Friend of Foe? that bows Friday April 13, 8p.  Additionally, kajeet is the sponsor of the episode themed Friend or Foe Trash Bash game on nick.com.

MIPTV SPRING 2007

Big Tent Entertainment, a licensing and marketing agency, has completed a second round of financing led by Mercury Capital Partners, a NY private equity firm, with participation from Act II Capital, Big Tent Investors LLC, and other individuals. Mercury Capital joins anchor investor Bedford Capital.

Four new international partners acquire rights for animated TV series Edgar & EllenCake Entertainment has been European distribution partner for Edgar & Ellen, and in turn Cake has inked deals for the series, specials and shorts with broadcasters NRK (Norway) and Noga Communications (Israel).  LUK Internacional SA takes all broadcast rights in Spain, Portugal, and Andorra, and will act as a specialized distribution partner.  In addition, SRC (Canada) has inked a rights deal, which was brokered by Bardel with an assist by Cake.  Produced by Star Farm Productions and Bardel Entertainment in association with YTV. The Edgar & Ellen series will run on Nicktoons Network (US) from August 2007, and in September on YTV (Canada).

Entertainment Rights has completed a group of international TV broadcast and home entertainment deals for the preschool series Rupert Bear  Follow the Magic

  • Recent broadcast partners include France 5, Super RTL (Germany), and Kidz Entertainment (Scandinavia).  Rupert has been sold to 65+ regions worldwide including RTE (Ireland), RTP (Portugal), Pop TV (Slovenia), Asia TV Ltd (Hong Kong), Cineplex (Thailand), and Canal and Cyfrowy (Poland), among others.
  • On the home entertainment side, deals for Rupert include Genuis Products (US, Canada), Cass Film (Poland), Lusomundo Audiovis (Portugal), Modern Times SA (Greece), HVN Video (Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei), Astar Media Production (Taiwan), CITEL (France), Nu Metro Entertainment (South Africa), Tiflon Iletisim Siste (Turkey) and Viva Entertainment (Middle East).

Taffy Entertainment has inked four new deals for the animated TV adaptation of Fantastic Four, based on Marvel’s franchise.  GMTV has acquired the show to run on its weekend kid’s block, Toonattik, which airs on ITV1 and CITV.  Fantastic Four has also been acquired by, TV Globo (Brazil), MRTL (Hungary) and Fox Video (for Europe and Latin America). The series will also be seen on Cartoon Network in Europe, Latin America and Asia in 2007.

FremantleMedia heads to MIPTV with a new set of deals in place for the live-action tween/teen series Falcon Beach.  New broadcast deals for the series include: Asian broadcasters Star TV (pan-regional), Onmedia (Korea) and VTV (Vietnam) and European broadcasters RTL TVI (French speaking Belgium), Cosmopolitan TV (Spain and Andorra  Pay), TV Plus (Poland), Slovak TV (Slovakia), UMDB (Ukraine) and Sigma (Cyprus). In addition, MBC, Middle East and Corporacion TV, Venezuela join the other markets already on board.  Falcon Beach is produced by Insight Productions and Original Pictures, in conjunction with Global Television and ABC Family.

MARKETING/LICENSING

TV-Loonland has granted Martin Yaffe International the toy license for the animated preschool series Little Princess.  Yaffe Int. will develop products across a range of toy categories  including figures, plush, inflatables as well as wheeled and educational activity toys. First products are expected to hit store shelves in the UK and Ireland in February 2008. The Illuminated Film Company produces the Little Princess TV series.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Marcos Bandeira de Mello joins Warner Bros. Consumer Products Brazil as its new GM.  He is responsible for developing business opportunities and managing all licensing sales and related operations of the division throughout Brazil, including working with licensees, retailers, promotional partners and other WBCP offices around the world.  Marcos Bandeira de Mello (using his whole name because it is beautiful and so much fun to say) joins WBCP from Caloi Norte/Gym Brand where he was most recently VP.

In addition to naming Nancy Fowler to head its new Global Brand Management division, DIC Entertainment fills out the group with several executive appointments. Leila Pirnia becomes VP for the new group, overseeing the global brand managers, guiding strategic direction across all platforms. She had been DIC’s VP/Strategic Planning & Business Development.  Reporting to Pirnia are two new Directors, Geri Robert and Shawn Brower.  Robert will serve as brand manager for Horseland, Madeline, Dinosaurs, Mommy & Me and Cake. Brower will oversee the Strawberry Shortcake and McDonald’s brands.

In other organization news, DIC has expanded the role of its international sales executives to include oversight of sales across TV, home entertainment/new media and consumer products.  Reporting to Nancy Fowler, this newly defined international sales group includes:

  • Leslie Nelson becomes SVP & MD, EMEA.  Reporting to Nancy Fowler, Nelson is responsible for multi-platform business in Europe, Eastern Europe, Middle East, Nordic and Africa and she will work closely with European licensing agent Copyright Promotions. Previously, she was MD/Worldwide Sales and Marketing, BKN International.
  • Ryan Gagerman becomes VP and Regional Manager/Asia Pacific, including Australasia, which in turn includes China, Japan and India.  He had been VP/International Consumer Products
  • Dan Waite becomes VP and Regional Manager/Latin America, including Latin America and Spanish Language TV in the US.  He had been DIC’s VP/International TV Sales for Latin America, Eastern Europe and Asia.
