On Friday, the programming service MyNetwork TV renewed by its station groups for another three years. Those groups continuing with MyNetwork TV include the ten FOX O&Os.  FOX developed and launched MyNetwork in 2006 after CBS and Warner Bros. merged The WB and UPN to become The CW Network.  The CW stayed on mostly WB affiliates paving the way for MyNetwork TV to launch on the UPN affiliates.  MyNetwork TV has gone through three format changes and two years ago FOX turned MyNetwork TV into a programming service housing top-rated off-network shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Burn Notice, Without a Trace, Monk and others.  As of last year, MyNetwork TV had increased by 194% to 2.65 million total viewers since it started in 2006.

Reports are circulating dance competition series Live to Dance featuring Paula Abdul has been canceled by CBS, though the network has not yet made nor announced a final decision on its outcome.  The recent season finale of Live to Dance attracted 4.8 million total viewers.

For the 83rd Annual Academy Awards presentation on February 27, ABC sold all the available television commercial time, charging $1.7 million for each 30-second spot.  ABC’s rates in 2009 and 2010 dipped due to the economic downturn to $1.3 million to $1.5 million, though in 2008 it brought in $1.8 million for each spot.

My Strange Addiction on TLC picked up for a second season prior to the airing of the first season finale this Wednesday at 9p.  My Strange Addiction produced by 20 West Productions, examines the lives of individuals struggling with extreme and bizarre addictions.  TLC is also bringing back the series Hoarding: Buried Alive on March 2 at 10p, produced by Discovery Studios.

USA Network’s two-hour prequel film, Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe will debut April 17 at 9p.  Produced by Fox Television Studios, the film is set in 2005 and stars Bruce Campbell as Lt. Commander Sam Axe.

Actress Betty Garrett, known for roles in blockbuster MGM musical films and also in two popular 1970s television sitcoms, died Saturday at the age of 91.  After an early career on Broadway, Ms. Garrett made a contract agreement with MGM and starred in several musicals including “Neptune’s Daughter” and “On the Town” with Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra.  Best known though, for two recurring 1970s television roles, Ms. Garrett played landlady Edna Babish on Laverne & Shirley and the Bunkers’ neighbor, Irene Lorenzo on All in the Family.

Veteran television journalist, Jon Petrovich, 64, died last Thursday.  Mr. Petrovich was with CNN for 15 years serving as head of CNN Headline News and their ancillary assets, and he was also involved with the creation and launch of CNN En Espanol, CNN Airport Network and  Additionally, Mr. Petrovich had a three-year stint as the head of Turner Broadcasting Latin America before joining Sony Pictures Television International in Los Angeles for another three years as EVP.  Most recently, Mr. Petrovich was Chair of the Medill School of Broadcasting at Northwestern University and then supervisor of the Associated Press Television service.  He is survived by his wife, Karen, two children and three grandchildren.
