Tokyo beat out Istanbul and Madrid to play host to the 2020 Summer Olympics, the last in NBC‘s current contract. The net shelled out a whopping $1.418 billion for the 2020 Games, but considering 2012’s sky-high ratings (a record 219 million viewers) it looks like money well spent.
Like AMC‘s Breaking Bad and Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy has gotten itself an aftershow chatfest. FX will stream 30-minute eps live on its web site after the 10p season six premiere on Tuesday, September 10, episode five and the season finale. There will be emphasis on event broadcasts, like the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in December.
Pepsi is bowing out of its flagship sponsorship of Fox‘s The X-Factor. Taking its place, along with departing Chevrolet, are Honda and Procter & Gamble. Honda’s Odyssey minivan will get digital-voting social media exposure, while P&G will plug Cover Girl, Secret deodorant and Herbal Essence.
For the record books: AMC‘s Breaking Bad made the 2014 Guinness World Records Book as Highest-Rated Series. Nielsen-wise it’s no Duck Dynasty, but the record is based on MetaCritic.com’s score of 99 out 100 for the critically acclaimed meth drama. Docu-series Life After is back for season five to check in with celebs who faced major turning points in their lives and careers. “Actress Maia Campbell (In the House) is probably the biggest surprise of the season,” K2 Pictures Inc.‘s Exec Producer Robert Katz tells Cynopsis. “She had amazing success, then faded from the limelight. We’re glad we can tell the rest of her story.” Series returns on TV One September 11 at 8p.
When The X-Factor premiered last season, the spotlight was on Britney Spears. After lackluster ratings, Spears is gone, and Kelly Rowland, Paulina Rubio and returning Demi Lovato sit with Simon Cowell on the judge’s panel – but this year, at a screening for several season three auditions, Cowell promised it will be the contestants who will shine. “The whole purpose of making this show is to find a star,” said Cowell. Season premiere is Wednesday, September 11 at 8p.
Networks (both Cable & Broadcast) are faced with eroding ratings and ad dollars shifting from TV to Digital. That’s why Cynopsis is presenting a conference on what networks are doing and what they need to do more of to aggressively evolve to compete, and profit in this shifting landscape. Join us as our experts share the latest business and advertising models for success at the Cynopsis Future TV Summit!

Pac-12 Network, Pac-12 Los Angeles and Pac-12 Bay Area will now be available on U-verse, and AT&T will become the exclusive wireless provider for the Pac-12 venues. Oriental Dreamworks is digging deeper into China. The partnership between DreamWorks Animation and three Chinese partners was originally envisioned as a feature animation company, but Head of Production Joe Aguilar announced that plans have expanded to include animated TV, live action films and live action TV, including reality shows.
Bethenny Frankel‘s new syndicated talker, Bethenny, from Telepictures and A Very Good Production, makes its debut today after a successful test run last summer. “We always believed Bethenny had the talent, popularity and credibility with daytime viewers to become appointment television,” Ken Werner, President Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution tells Cynopsis, “and are thrilled the long wait is over.”
