Good morning. It’s Monday, September 24, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Imagi Animation Studios has inked a deal with writer/producer Paul Dini to collaborate on the screen for its upcoming CG animated movie, Gatchaman. Directed by Kevin Munroe and slated for release in early 2009, the movie is based on the original classic Japanese anime series, Gatchaman (1970s), which aired in the US as both GForce and battle of the Planets. Dini has written for and/or produced TV series including, Batman: The Animated Series and Lost and a range of comics such as Detective, The World’s Greatest Superheroes and DC Comics weekly series Countdown (2007-8).
Navy Seals is to be the first movie as part of the recent co-production pact between The Weinstein Company (TWC) and Exodus Film Group. Under the deal the two will jointly develop, produce and finance a slate of GC animated movies, DVDs and TV series, with TWC handling distribution. Based on an original idea from Exodus, Navy Seals is a family-aimed adventure/comedy about a pod of captured Navy dolphins that look to a herd of misfit seals for help. Justin Eick is writing the screenplay.
CBeebies has picked up 52 11-minute episodes of Tinga Tinga Tales, a new preschool series from Tiger Aspect, per Broadcast Now. Based on African folk tales, the series design reflects the paintings of the Tanzanian Tinga Tinga artists. Tiger Aspect presented the series last week at Cartoon Forum looking to complete funding for the project. Slated to begin production on the series in Nairobi this coming January 2008, where Tiger Aspect has established an animation studio in association with Homeboyz Entertainment, delivery is anticipated for 2009 or 2010. Additionally, Tiger Aspect plans to donate half of the series profits towards African education.

A.D. Vision, Inc.’s ADV Films said Friday that it has “withdrawn plans” to be the sole distributor of Geneon Entertainment’s anime products (DVD, CD etc) in North America. Announced just a few weeks ago, on August 29, the strategic alliance was to have commenced on October 1, 2007. No details were given for why the deal did not go forward. Geneon Entertainment is a subsidiary of the Japanese advertising agency Dentsu, Inc.
Square Enix Co., Ltd. introduces three new titles in the Kingdom Hearts video game series at the Tokyo Game Show 2007: Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days for the Nintendo DS; Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep for Sony’s PSP; and Kingdom Hearts for mobile phones. These titles are currently only confirmed for release in Japan, with dates for rollout around the world forthcoming.
Those meddling kids will be back in stores with Warner Home Video’s release What’s New Scooby-Doo? The Complete Third Season on DVD January 8, 2008. In addition to the 13 episodes that comprise season three of What’s New Scooby-Doo, the two-disc set includes an extra episode titled, Scooby-Doo Christmas. The third season of series initially ran from January 2005 to July 2006 on The WB.

Looking to reach younger people, The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has teamed with noted comic book writers/artists to launch Defenders of Freedom. Including back cover art by comic book legend Art Spiegelman, the ACLU has released the limited edition graphic novel in print via “guerilla marketing” teams in seven US cities, as well as in digital format on its youth-targeted website ( www.aclu.org/standup ). Defenders of Freedom is comprised of two original stories: Blue Collar, written by Jimmy Palmiotti and inked by Rick Burchett, about a man and a racist police officer; A Question of Obligation, illustrated by Mark Badger and written by Matthew Manning, a story about a clash between government involvement and civil liberties.
